that's the way i see it anyway. Really this guy should step away from this series, and let someone like Ryota Kawade come back, or heck Yoshiaki Koizumi would probably do a much better job with Paper Mario than Tanabe has for the past 3 games now. As hopeful as I am TOK is better than the last 2. But still.

I hardly see how that's true. He's breaking things that are broken. And that's no good.
 
As someone who thought some of the previous accusations based on those infamous 2012 Sticker Star interviews were a bit overblown... this new interview is a major bummer. Not because of the comments on story (like, I love the story based Marios, but I can understand if that's not what they want to do.), but because of this: "Since Paper Mario: Sticker Star, it's no longer possible to modify Mario characters or to create original characters that touch on the Mario universe."

So basically, no unique characters based off previously established enemy designs, and while they can make wholly new enemies, they aren't allowed to reuse them in future games, and that's apparently directly because of the higher ups. Man. I thought they expanded the Mario verse. To hear that Nintendo straight up doesn't allow them to appear again or sticks them to one off status as an official rule and not just them not bothering to reuse them sucks man. Just unnecessarily restrictive for no good reason.

I strongly disagree with the philosophy for Mario NPC design as well. Look at how varied humans are, with a lot of different body shapes, different facial features...even nonhuman creatures have a large body-shape variety. I don't think Toads should just have their designs CTRL C + CTRL V'd all over the place with the only alteration between their hue color and their outfits. It lends this cookie-cutter aspect to Mario games that makes it feel more samey than it should be.

I mean...I guess you could argue that Toads can tell each other apart since Toads have their own pattern of facial recognizably (there is a disorder within humans that cause them to not differentiate between faces yes, called prosopagnosia) but still, I think some facial bumps and tweaks to differentiate the NPCs would be nice, it's not like it's budget-breaking and yet it's a small touch that would add a lot more to the world. But I guess Nintendo wants their Mario games to be vanilla, marketable, safe, and ultimately uninteresting so...yeah. I'm going to miss characters like Shroomlock, Mr. E, Koopie Koo, Goombella, etc.
 
I'm not going to say this is a good thing but I'd be lying if I said I cared all that much.
 
If the developers were to adhere to character restrictions, perhaps the situation could have been turned into an advantage. In quite a number of ways, I can see that happened, such as how varied the locations are and how well the papercraft are used to design the environments. I suppose that, on the character front, it didn't reach the full potential since the series is content with sticking with a somewhat insular character list, such as how the secondary Mario cast like Wario, Daisy, Donkey Kong and Waluigi aren't featured in those games, nor are the appearances of less frequent species/characters like the Piantas and the Lumas.

Something I thought was interesting about the Paper Mario series is how the paperwork come to life even if they're pretty much crafts. Like for example, the water is represented by sheets of paper but they move in a way that resemble water, and my opinion is that they all seem quite... magical. In a way, there's also an element of horror, such as how black paint worked in Colour Splash, since it seems to not only be harmful, but corrupting and potentially world-ending. In this game's case, a character's transformation into origami triggering something different in them is also what I considered magical.

Although not everybody is a fan of the focus on papery elements, I welcomed this approach because it conveys emotion in a simple way.

I've played about an hour of PM:TOK, and as of now, here are my first impressions:

I must say, I was impressed with the opening of the game. As a person who's first PM game was Color Splash, the graphics, cutscenes, and story look to be much better than Color Splash. I liked Luigi's inclusion at the beginning, but I have yet to find him after the castle was lifted by King Olly. Speaking of the castle being lifted, that was my favorite cutscene so far. The intense music, the action, Mario and Bowser running on the roof, about to be submerged in colorful streamers, when suddenly, a paper Shy Guy comes to the rescue!

I'll admit, the inhabitants being turned into origami reminded me somewhat of the Toads' paint being taken in Color Splash, and the confetti mechanic felt a lot like the paint mechanic from Color Splash. The 100-fold arms I haven't used too much yet (around five times), but they control quite nicely, and I'm fine with the motion controls there. Olivia reminds me of Huey, but King Olly being her brother is an element that Huey couldn't offer, so that's a plus to Olivia.

As for the battle, in terms of what the player gets from it, it suffers from the same problem as Color Splash - coins and confetti, which I can gain from the Overworld. Coins feel even more worthless now, I have already gained over 5000 of them, and in a couple of instances, I was rewarded with a 1000 coins at once. The ring mechanic works well, but I haven't gotten to harder battles just yet, so I can't comment on the difficulty.

In conclusion, from what I've seen so far, the game is a definite upgrade from Color Splash, however, it's not all that different in terms of mechanics. Better story, better cutscenes, better battle system - but not all that different. I've never played the original two PM games, so I can't compare this to that, but I can the lack of EXP and the under-usage of partners bothering a lot of people.
 
I have also played through the game. And I'll state my opinion.
OH MY GOSH! THIS GAME IS SO SO GORGEOUS! The cutscenes are great, I can't really describe it but mwa! The game has way to much dialogue in the beginning though. Just so much random chit chat between Bowser and Olivia. And Tutorials aplenty. I KNOW WHAT A SAVE BLOCK IS OLIVIA! I HSS AS VE BEEN USING THEM FOR YEARS! The music is pretty good. The red streamer battle music is my favorite so far. Got to admit the game is pretty cleaver in showing you how crap works. Battle system. Alright I don't know yet if the game has partners because J don't have one quite yet so I'm gonna shut my ***. The game has no EXP but rewards you with coins. I fee the game benefits from it. So instead of you not being able to do crap simply because your not leveled up, You know level up by getting progressively better at the battles by improving your own skill instead of Mario's! If their is one thing I hate in RPG's it's grinding. Second. No. Attacks are not consumable. The puzzles in the battles are ok. But they are probably like that because. Come on, it's the beginning of the game. Third. This is not a traditional RPG. It is more of an adventure game. So. Yeah. I feel the battle system is an improvement over 64,TTYD,SUPER,SS,CS. This is the definitive version of Paper Mario in my opinion.
I want you guys to do something for me. I want you to realize just because somethings different. Doesn't means it's bad.

EDIT: Yeah, There are also unique characters now!

Okay then, since everyone else is giving first impressions, might as well jump on that as well!

So the game starts, and I immediately notice how Luigi follows Mario for, like, 10 seconds. Took a screenshot of that, probably gonna make a joke about it on Twitter (you'll see what that is). From then on out it was pretty good, fun battle system, witty writing; the only thing that was annoying was the constant tutorials. I stopped playing for now after finding Luigi at Peach's Castle. I'm about to search for the red streamer end.

So, yeah, so far, it's pretty good: graphics, gameplay, story, characters, all great!
 
In any case, sorry if I'm repetitive on that, but let's not forget that Color Splash had EXP: the hammer scraps were exactly that as you only got them by battling, and when you filled the hammer bar through them you increased a stat: max paint available.

As useless as max paint could be considered due to painted cards being available and overworld paint being often abundant as well, Color Splash never was a "No EXP game". Since many first impressions of The Origami King now mostly tend to devalue that game for more or less legitimate reasons, I think we should at least give it the minimum credit of having at least tried to make battles worthwhile again in a more significant way than the enemy-exclusive weapons stickers of Sticker Star.

The spoilers on youtube for this game got so bad I finally caved and got a channel blocker plugin.

i saw some things but i don't think i saw anything TOO spoilery

with that being said, it's honestly unbelievable that we're in the year 2020 and people STILL haven't learned that spoiling stuff in the fucking thumbnail of your videos ruins the experience for several people, including myself

(shit i hope it doesn't take me too long to get this)
