post any random Mario thought on your mind

In older Mario Kart games, when the timer hits its maximum, it would just lock and you could still play in the course.
But now, MK8D exits you out of the course at, was it 10minutes? What is the purpose of that, the replay feature perhaps? Ghost data? Whatever the case, I don't like it.

I liked messing in the courses of VS mode. Also replay data isn't affected; if you somehow draw out replay too long, it'll just end eventually. Ghost data isn't even recorded for versus mode. Nintendo has zero excuse doing this.

You're not even going to run the timer at a hacked 7 laps which is the true way to enjoy courses.

Mario Kart 7 multiplayer ALSO does this. We found out the hard way that we tried to force Wario last place via shells only and item camping and constantly throwing red shells at him and then catching up to 2nd place (1st place would eventually park and then throw shells at Wario; no coin item to screw you over either). Local play is so thoroughly screwed by Nintendo's laziness and incompetence porting online "features" in the game such as inability to pause and timers goddamn everywhere and inability to go back in some menus.

I think Nintendo's the only big company so capable of screwing this up this bad. The moment they touch programming for online, they lose all their brain cells and pull off absurd design like this

Now I remember why I don't post here very often now. I can't stand seeing this kind of toxicity.

But Mario Kart 7's local multiplayer is very flawed though. It functions exactly like online play which means that:

•You cannot pause the game to take a break. Once you start a game, you have to play until the end.
•After you set the rules and advance to the course selection, you can't go back to change the rules and get new CPU opponents. This might not seem like a big deal, but to someone who cares about the CPU characters like me, it is a big deal.
•In addition to the 5 minute timer during races, there is a timer at the results screen that forces you to move on to the next race. Once again, this doesn't allow you to take a break in the middle of a game.
•You can't set the number of races or battles, it's always four.

And the thing is, Mario Kart DS, an older game on an older console, didn't have any of these problems. What's their excuse for screwing up Mario Kart 7's local multiplayer?

No, it's not the replay functionality. Replays cap out at 5 minutes, the results screen shows while your characters are racing if you do see a replay that exceeds the 5 minute limit.

It's the same reason Nintendo forces you back straight for driving backward: because they're being a nanny-state and railroading you to play their game how they intended it to be played.

Yes, it's supposed to help players that drive backwards (there are Mario Kart players who do this, they're typically very young children with neurodivergent traits), but we already have smart steering in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, so that stuff is pointless and I fucking hate it.

The 10 timer? I can't find an excuse. So what if no one can finish the race in 10 minutes? If a player is intentionally being an asshole during local play, then that's up to the player to moderate, not Nintendo. I get it in an online environment, but not in a fucking local environment where you can, you know, actually interact with other players. Having the pause screen menu being a bare minimum (Continue, Quit) with no other options such as Restart Race or Change Course or Change Character or Change Vehicle certainly doesn't help.

Mario Kart 7's local play was a slap-dashed together piece of shit multiplayer experience that assumes local play is the same as online play and that you, like, can't interact with your friends whatsoever. It didn't necessarily need to be this way, because as you said, Mario Kart DS played perfectly fine, allowing you to pause and take your time selecting a combination and what not.

All I'm doing is giving a game I'd otherwise like robust criticism that I think richly deserves the criticism especially when such content is often absent in video game reviews; local multiplayer is supposed to be a major component of Mario Kart is it? It's so poorly put together I'd subtract a whole number from my review score just because of it. I don't see the toxicity in display aside from the tongue-cheek remark about 7 laps being a good way to enjoy racing especially on 200cc. I'm sorry if I came off as toxic, but I'm not trying to attack anyone....

Furthermore, I've played only the complete wireless play, NOT download play, which is, of course, worse. You have to buy two copies of a game and you'd still have that, frankly, pretty insulting way this multiplayer was put together.

Edit: I looked through the reviews listed in MarioWiki, with working links that is, and not one really went into the abysmal local multiplayer, not even the negative review.

I don't know where I got it in my head that playing as Mario (or Luigi, but to a lesser extent) in basically anything will make people think I'm boring or unoriginal or something. I feel like I really need to get over that because it's pretty stupid.

When people think Mario is boring, that's just their opinion. It's an issue when they pass that judgement to you, as if that's reflective of your qualities. Otherwise, don't internalize people's disagreeing opinions on things. I'm not ashamed to use Toad either.

Mario or Luigi tend not to specialize but think of a trait rather than a lack of. Think "versatile", "adaptable", and other similar strong positive adjectives for all-arounders rather than "basic", "master of no trade" or "no defining qualities".

I mean, to be fair, I do have a habit of taking the negative things people say about me as gospel and subconsciously refusing to try to get it out of my head.

But yeah, there are a lot of things to like about Mario and Luigi, I just worry too much about other people's opinions, I guess. I don't even know if someone told me once that playing as them is boring, I just got it in the back of my mind somehow.

For some reason, I've come to associate the Mario brand as a whole with this:

The title theme of Mario 3D Land pops up in my head whenever I see a random piece of Mario media or merch, like when someone in the metro wears a Mario jacket. The game wasn't the first Mario game I ever played nor do I think it's particularly better than the SMB theme (which is the Mario music basically), it's just that I must think it's the most Mario or something.

This song comes to mind when I see something Mario related
Idk I've just heard it used so much

Oh no I get it. 3D Land weirdly encapsulates the essence of modern day Mario, while NSMB's soundtrack is an updated olden days music. Yet they're both games which bring the old to the new.

Okay, I feel like this is going to sound really petty, but I have a massive grudge against Mario Party Superstars and I haven't even played it. Hear me out.

The balancing of N64 content to content from anything else is godawful. I get that everyone is nostalgic for the N64 games but having played everything from 1-10, there are a ton of minigames from the GCN, Wii, and even Mario Party 10 that are really good and that they should have included. On top of that, not a single board from anything after 3? Really? Do they all just blow that bad?

I like the N64 Mario Party games fine enough, I'm not saying I dislike them (even if I think 1 isn't as good as the nostalgia-goggles crowd does), but the GCN Mario Party games especially had some really good content to pull from and I feel like so much of it got neglected in order to pander to the N64 nostalgia crowd.

Been reading articles on the Valiant Comics on the Wiki, turns out the movie isn't the only thing that paired Mario with a version of Big Bertha, I don't get the pairing of him and a literal giant fish but hey, ship what you want I guess

What would the "Think Before You Shake" mission in Galaxy 2 be renamed to if the game ever got a port where motion controls were made optional? Think Before You Spin? Think Before You Step? Think Before You... Press?

"Think Before you Spin" does roll off the tongue better due to the similarities in pronunciation between "think" and "sink" "spin".

You get to choose one new playable character for the next Mario Kart game, but only from the following three options. No Mario RPG or WarioWare deep cuts for you! Which one will you pick?

A. a crossover character

B. An existing Mario Kart driver, but in a different weight class
