Welp, that comment's deleted and that user was banned.

Anyway, to anyone who has played and liked the game, is the ring-based battle system and the expansive overworlds the direction you would like the series to continue going in, assuming that the game series will not ever go back to its roots?

Petalguy99. Not surprising in the least. He got banned in both the wiki and the Discord too, under different names there.

Uh game looks super nice. Still hoping my sister and I buy it at some point so we can leave our own opinions in this thread. For the time being, stare at an image of the Shangri Spa.

I would love to see one big overworld in the next Paper Mario game, as I think that it fits the style more than a string of individual areas like in Color Splash, and to me, the areas feel more natural and part of a bigger environment that compliments the story.
As for the ring system, I don't expect it to return, and to be honest, I probably wouldn't want it to return. It was a cool thing for this game, but I would want them to try something different for the next game.

I love the large overworld in this game! The worldbuilding seems more natural that way.

I have to admit, the ring-based battle system gets repetitive after a while. But I do like the boss fight system!

I've just started playing the game today, and I do like the ring battle system. What seems to be so far an improvement from Sticker Star is that you actually have to battle more even without exp, as it doesn't seem like you can run from enemy encounters (correct me if I'm wrong), there's a good amount of required non-boss fights, and sometimes you need to fight to save a Toad, so while I would prefer the game to have exp the battle system at least never feels pointless. While I don't know if I would want the ring-based battles to return (I do enjoy them, don't get me wrong) having the game make you use the battle system more often is something I would like the series continue.

I definitely do prefer the expansive overworld over what was in the last two games.

I'm about halfway through the game and I do appreciate how the developers realized the battles are starting to get boring. So they toned down how much battleling you need to do. This is where the coin system shines. They need you to battle a lot so you'll have coins for buying stuff and using in boss battles. But as the game gets closer to the middle section they toned it down. Definitely a step in the right direction where other RPG's fail.

I made a mistake - you can run from normal enemy encounters, though there's still the required fights.

probably. i saw it happen on twitter quite a few times. however ttyd fans get a lot of hate as well because people see them as the most toxic kind of paper mario fans, especially modern pm fans.

this whole thing is just weeeeeeird lemme tell ya

If I say I like Color Splash, will the community be toxic? (Any other place Besides the Boards)
It's probably quite late of a reply, but I think I can answer this.

Unfortunately, I think that could very well be the case. A lot of the time, when Colour Splash is brought up, the aspects that aren't enjoyable (mostly those pertaining to flaws similar to Sticker Star) are focused on, such as the battles and the fact that Things are important to the game's progress. Origami King has the advantage of taking Colour Splash's strengths and not only expanding upon them but became the virtues associated with it that it's considered one of the better games. Another thing that Origami King has a leg up is being on a system that is popular and is in the middle of the life, which resulted in probably the best-selling Paper Mario game, whereas Colour Splash is released late on its console that it's not very popular as a result (by its release, the Nintendo Switch was already turning heads) so its virtues aren't as well-known. I imagine first impressions also count a lot, because Colour Splash got a negative one, whereas Origami King notably has a very positive one.

Personally I appreciated a good deal of things about Colour Splash, but I am afraid I am in the minority so my opinion probably doesn't matter.

Somehow I see those who prefer older Paper Mario games as having the advantage here because (in my mind) it's much easier to elucidate on why those games are better. Therefore, I kind of assume that they never really get lambasted on, compared to those who prefers the newer approach. I guess it has to do with how vocal it ended up being.

Thank you for reading.

In my opinion, The Origami King didn't really build on top of the strengths of Color Splash - I'd say that is more a narrative due to how few was Color Splash actually played. Color Splash had elements of the Wii U era - e.g. the Koopalings using weapons similar to the NSMBU weapons, Draggadon and the Mario Kart 8 Standard Kart and menu music. There's not a lot of Odyssey in The Origami King. Color Splash had the idea of calling enemies into battles as allies, this of course was not brought back in The Origami King and was replaced with proper partners. Color Splash had an EXP and leveling up system that was completely removed in The Origami King. That's not to say that The Origami King isn't the better game - it likely is - but it didn't really build on Color Splash, it did its own things while likely reusing the graphics engine.

i think i remember nintendo saying before origami king was even announced that the next paper mario would be completely unique and different from any paper mario game. with that info, i thought the game would take a similar art direction than yoshis crafted world or maybe it would take place in a kids room or something, so im slightly disappointed that it just has a similar artstyle to color splash. the unique thing they were talking about mustve been the battle system.
