What was the first Mario game you ever played?

64-Bit Nintendo Machine

These are the ones I first played.
Super Mario Game: NSMB Wii (Age 3)
Mario Tennis Game: New Play Control Mario Power Tennis (Age 4?)
Mario Party Game: Mario Party 8 (Age 4)
Mario Golf Game: Maro Golf: World Tour (Age 8?)
Mario Kart Game: Mario Kart DS (Age 4)

Super Mario Kart (SNES) when I was 4. I would play it with my mom and we would both lose epically.

I feel ashamed about that one

taking the order which i listed in my spreadsheet, which i honestly can't guarantee for the earlier ones because i was so young and can't remember, but i'm moderately sure this is mostly correct.

mario kart wii (age 6) -> new super mario bros ds (7) -> super mario galaxy 2 (7) -> donkey kong country returns (8) -> new soup wii (8) -> super paper mario (8) -> mario vs donkey kong mini land mayhem (9) -> bowser's inside story (9), super mario galaxy 1 (9) -> mario party 9 (9) -> london 2012 (9) -> mario party 8 (10, never owned this one) -> (insert very large gap here) -> paper mario ttyd (15) -> super mario sunshine (16) -> super mario 64 (16) -> superstar saga (16) -> super mario land 1 (16) -> super mario land 2 (16) -> paper mario 1 (16) -> 3d world (16) -> super mario bros. 1 (16) -> 3d land (16) -> maker 1 (16) -> party 6 (16) -> super mario bros. 2 (16) -> donkey kong country returns 3d (17)

so i THINK mario kart wii was my first and my brother is fairly sure this is true

first from each series:
mario kart - wii
super mario 2d - soup ds
super mario 3d - galaxy 2
donkey kong - DKCR
paper mario - super paper mario
mario vs donkey kong - mini land mayhem

Mario Party 8

By series:
2D: NSMBW
3D: Super Mario 3D Land(though I sadly no longer own it, as it belonged to my eldest brother and he wanted it back)
Smash Bros: Smash for 3DS(though my game card for it just recently bit the dust)
Mario Party: 8
Yoshi: Yoshi's New Island
Sports: Power Tennis
Mario and Sonic: Winter 2010 Olympics
Mario Kart: 8, though I'm very terrible at Mario Kart and as such, I prefer Sonic and all-stars racing transformed(Another one of my brother's games, specifically the PS3 version) when it comes to controls
Donkey Kong: DKCR, though I never actually played it.
Paper: SPM, though I never played it myself.
Other: Super Princess Peach and Mario+Rabbids.

Mario Kart Wii was among the first real video games I ever played, alongside Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort. That was on Christmas 2009, I believe. I had recently turned 5 at that point.

Not long after we got New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Mario Party 8, all of which I have a ton of nostalgia for to this day. I believe I got them all around 2010 and 2011.

If listing first games by series, then I've listed them here, alongside the year I first played it in:

Super Mario (2D) - NSMBWii (2010)
Super Mario (3D) - Galaxy 2 (2011)
Mario Kart - Mario Kart Wii (2009)
Mario Party - Mario Party 8 (2010)
Mario & Luigi - Dream Team (2015)
Paper Mario - Color Splash (2016)
Mario Golf - World Tour (2014)
Mario Tennis - Open (2015)
Mario & Sonic - London 2012 (Wii) (2012)
Yoshi - New Island (2015)
Donkey Kong - DKC Returns (2010)

actually that's a good idea i'll edit that into mine

Why, i heard it has really good minigames
Well, the thing is, I played it on my friend's Wii, and he also had Mario Kart Wii, and little me liked Mario Party 9 more. Also, I hear people having legendary first Mario games, such as Bowser's Inside Story and Super Mario 64, while mine was ... Mario Party 9.

my first mario game was mario kart wii, which is the only mario game i dislike, but that's fine, i found plenty of cool stuff after

I wouldn't consider BiS legendary lol at least not paired next to the first 3d Mario game. Unless you were to say that it's the first Bowser centric game. But then we could also say MP9 is legendary for being the first multiplayer boss fight centric Mario game.

Believe me, you're not alone. I always say that Mario Kart Wii was my first real video game, but you know what my first video game ever was? Counting on Zero, an edutainment game for an edutainment console that nobody's ever heard of. In fact, I could list quite a few more I played for the same system: Star Wars: Jedi Reading, Batman: Strength in Numbers, Math Cosmos...oh yeah, and Sonic X. The best game ever released for the system.

My first one overall was Dr. Mario for the Game Boy. For each individual series:
  • 2D Mario- New Super Mario Bros. Wii
  • 3D Mario- Super Mario Galaxy
  • Mario Kart- Mario Kart Wii
  • Mario Party- Mario Party DS
  • Mario & Sonic- Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Nintendo DS)
  • Donkey Kong- Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
  • Yoshi- Yoshi's Island DS
  • Wario- WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Game$!
  • Mario vs. Donkey Kong- Mario v. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem!
  • Dr. Mario- Dr. Mario (Game Boy)
  • Super Smash Bros.- Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
  • Luigi's Mansion- Luigi's Mansion 2
  • Mario Tennis- Mario Tennis Aces

Let me think about that...
Mario Party DS. As soon as 10-year-old me placed the cartridge in my DS Lite, I knew I was in for one heck of a ride.

Also, if we're doing the first game by series thing:
2D Mario: NSMB 1
3D Mario: Mario 64 DS
Mario Kart: DS
Mario Party: See above
Mario and Sonic: Tokyo 2020
Donkey Kong: DKC Returns 3D
Yoshi: Never played outside of demos
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (also my first 3DS game)
Paper Mario: Sticker Star
Wario: WarioWare Gold
Mario vs. DK: amiibo Challenge
Dr. Mario: Dr. Mario World
Super Smash Bros.: 3DS
Luigi's Mansion: LM3
Mario Tennis: Aces
Mario Golf: World Tour

smb2 of all things.. emulated . i just got into mario a few months prior and then obsessed over smb2 in particular for a few months which was really weird lookin back

2D Mario: SMW (Super Mario Advance 2 ver.)
3D Mario: SM64
Paper Mario: TTYD
Mario & Luigi: SSS
Mario Kart: 64
Mario Party: Either 1 or 8
Mario vs. Donkey Kong: GBA
Mario & Sonic: original DS
Mario Tennis: Aces
Super Smash Bros.: 64

Ah, I remember it like it was yesterday. I woke up one early morning at my grandmother's house and saw my dad play some strange device called a "Wii". Before then I had only played strange, 90s educational games so it was weird to me. He gave me a remote and ask if I wanted to play as he booted up a game. Then, a voice shouted from the screen "NEW SUPER MARIO BROTHERS! WHEE-HEE!" Within five minutes I was captivated by the game and it's world. It was so fun hopping and fliping around. That day not only introduced me to mario, but gaming as a whole.
