Paper Mario: The Origami King

I was told I was stupid because I liked the Tape as a boss concept, and someone else compared liking "stupid" things like the Legion of Stationary to alcoholism and drug abuse (yes this one's a real comment, and that user who made that comment doubled down when called out on)

Point is, people get extremely toxic when they disagree with other people's tastes, as if they never learned what a difference of opinion is; admittedly, I'm not 100% innocent either since I also feel like I'm always on the defensive, such as some ass calling me "stupid" because I like something that he doesn't. When you got a series that goes in a very different direction than what it started out as, you'll split the fanbase apart and you create this toxic tribalism between people. I don't like generalizing fanbases like saying "oh the TTYD fans like their baby RPG games with stupidly dark plots" or "oh the Sticker Star are literal babies who don't know quality content", it's a false dictomony of people, there's nuance, there are shades of gray to liking games, you can be fans of both styles but like one style more than the other, and what not.

At the end of the day? It's all over a video game. None of the personal attacks that are lobbed are warranted in the slightest. Whoever lobbed the insults and threats against that aforementioned YouTuber can go fuck off. You can like and want the 64/TTYD style games, I do too. You can think of how to improve the series the way it is, you can want clothed original characters again. You can also like what the newer games did correctly. Nothing's perfect, everyone's different, and you are not stupid for liking the more extended focus on story that SPM has or liking the minimalist plot from Sticker Star. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise, you play and enjoy the games, they're entertainment, they're meant to make you happy, not brood these toxic discussions.

I wouldn't say the "tables have turned" per say, I'd just say there are a lot of assholes on both sides.

In fact if anything to imply there is just 2 sides in of itself is disingenuous.

It's pretty much tribalism mentality, and this isn't exclusive to the Paper Mario fanbase, not in the slightest. You'll find that sort of toxicity in practically any split fanbase ever, whether it's from the console wars, to Star Wars, to...pretty much any sort of media ever. It's horrible, and I hate it.

Not even reading and learning about human cognitive shortcomings makes you immune to it. In fact it can make you cocky as hell.

anyway it's just a bunch of bickering kids on there, or at least people with the mentality of kids. moderation is scant and trolling is rewarded. if you post on there, you're really playing a part in that circus show.

it's especially apparent in big internet circles or when moderation otherwise is poor. you notice the quality difference in conversation when there's people respecting what the moderators say or do 👀

but these video games mean so much to me and i mean that. saying i like SPM, BIS, TTYD, SSS, PM64 and PIT is an understatement, they're not just i sit down blast a bunch of stuff and have fun, they actually make me happy and my life is better because of them. i really do feel enthusiastic about having original characters again because it really does mean a lot to me.

When I said that, it was primarily directed at hate and toxic ideals. It's great that you're passionate about a game, more power to you, I'm as about as obsessed and passionate about my favorite games too!

Really good video honestly. I hate that we live in a world where we have to justify tastes in order to avoid backlash. That said, I'm glad this community exists because I can truly feel confident in saying I don't like TTYD here more than anywhere else on the internet.

Disagreeing is alright, it just means you think differently. Judging a person over something as superficial as opinions on fucking video games of all things is not ok.

Honestly, I don't care what the game's gonna be like as long as it's a good game. A lot of people are complaining about there being no story when that's simply not the case; it's just not the same kind of story that they're looking for.

It feels like fans have been unwilling to accept any decision that a video game company makes, especially if it doesn't fit with exactly what they want the company to do. I'm not overjoyed to know that Nintendo is sticking with the Color Splash style, but I'm not going to attack them and other people because it's not exactly what I wanted.

People have definitely become way too hostile over video games.

This is perfectly fine. Video games define all of us to an extent and the Mario games have brought all of us together to chat in the first place. It's why we're all friends here and why I myself have spent nearly 10 years here making friends. However, there are people that take video games too far as something that they live and die by. They rely too much on nostalgia, on their ideal perception of what things ought to be, and complain the loudest and try to feebly justify their complaints and try to shoot down whoever disagrees and likes whatever they dislike.

In the grand scheme of things, Paper Mario changing is a disappointment but the new games are harmless at worst and a little perspective on the game industry will go a long way toward perception. Madden, Mario Kart Tour, Ride to Hell Retribution, Pokemon Sword/Shield, game industry workplace abuse, and more are more worthy of condemnation. Paper Mario showing an apparent drop in quality is no excuse to lob insults at others for disagreeing. It's no excuse to act like an edgy immature asshole and tastelessly compare liking a roll of tape to being addicted to smoking.

This community at least has moderation to keep the vitriol down because people are passionate about what they like. But it allows for more perspectives to be shared, so I value that and so in a way, moderation is so much more healthy to be receptive a wider set of viewpoints than the apparent freedom to express whatever you want at the detriment of conversation.

Still though I'm not going to shoot you down for wanting original characters, at least compared to critiquing that idea. I think the backlash against original characters can be overly harsh. I do think there's an appeal to giving a Koopa a bandanna and a pink shell though I do believe you need to prepare yourself for people that disagree, even strongly, against that idea and liken it to DeviantArt OCs. We've had harsh critiques on Count Bleck's merits as a villain. But you have to know where those critiques come from as sometimes those are seen as being just vindictive.

In GameFAQs, criticizing Thousand-Year Door IS more widespread than you think, though if you're strong in condemnation, you will be labeled as a troll no matter what kind of support you have. Even saying "I disliked Thousand-Year Door" might net accusations of trolling, but GameFAQs has had a lot of threads on disliking Thousand-Year Door already. They're just tired of it, but again, I myself am tired of hearing that Thousand-Year Door is sacred or some masterpiece, so I believe that dismissive attitude is why we're seeing more critique of Thousand-Year Door as time goes by.

I just want to say, as far as fandoms go, Paper Mario is among the more obnoxious (at least from my experience in GameFAQs and compared to other Mario fandoms though I think Mario Kart can get pretty bad too with constant complaints about online or the spiny shell), but there are bigger and worse fandoms out there (after all, I think a quality of a fanom is inverse proportional to its size; a bigger the fandom the worse it is, hivemind psychology and all).

The fans is a hivemind though. There will be no decision that pleases completely everyone, though I will add that at least Smash Bros.'s "Everyone is Here" has been near universally well-received (might be complaints about returning Dr. Mario or Pichu but they're far outnumbered). Super Mario Odyssey's set-up also appears to be well-received? I haven't seen much complaint about its return to Super Mario 64/Sunshine format and a need to return to 3D World's format or to New Super Mario Bros.

I don't know how the fandom will receive a Thousand-Year Door faithful sequel but I think there will be wariness if it'll be like Super Paper Mario or the story is going to be try-hard but at least the vocal fans on how the last two Paper Marios are handled will be more enthusiastic.

Well if the game is more open world, I hope they pull it off well rather than spam radio towers and repetitive busy work.

i feel like it's gonna be kinda the zelda kind of open world. not the one from botw, but mostly zelda games with several big maps, like ocarina of time and especially wind waker with the boat section, and even the desert area reminds me of wind waker for some reason.

so i feel like areas in origami king will be similar to zelda locations and big kingdoms in mario odyssey like sand and wooded.

World map is gone, thank goodness.

Rotating partners is a bit of a shame though.
Tbh tho, was the world map really a bad thing? I haven't played SS or CS but from my experience with the other three having a way to travel quickly from location to locatoon without having to walk there sounds like a dream come true. Ironically, Spm is the one that I feel pulled this off the best since traveling to places is pretty fast there.

If anything I'd gladly take a world map, but the absence of it wouldn't ruin it for me.

The world map was fine in my opinion, but I think the inconvenience of running around allows for more possibilities, like encouraging people to use warp pipes. Here's to hoping they bring back the sewers, those were fun!
Encouraging people to use warp pipes isn't a good thing tho?

It means you're deliberately making navigating the world tedious enough for the player to feel compelled to use these pipes that you have to go off the beaten path to get to in the first place. One thing I liked about zelda oot is how when you get to a new location you immediately are given a way to come back instantly. That isn't the case with the first paper marios. You have to actually make your way there every time you wanna revisit an area before you even have access to fast-travel, and to get that fast-travel in the first place you need to go out of your way to unlock them and use them in later instances where you need them... So yeah.

It wasn't bad per say but I vastly prefer the locations being interconnected rather than segmented like levels.
I like interconnected levels too (one of the things I like about M&L) but Paper Mario has never had an open world. It's not something unique to SS and CS, they just added the world map to make traveling more convenient.

Anyway I like how they're bringing back non-linear level progression, it's a nice feature from Sticker Star that I never see anyone talk about.
