Unpopular opinions about the Mario series

All toasters toast toast

Ashley is still rubbish.

-Super Paper Mario is my favorite Mario RPG game. Then again, I like every Paper Mario game (except Sticker Star. Yes, I like Color Splash). I also loved Partners in Time (and was butthurt it didn't get the remake treatment at first. Seeing the unfortunate news involving AlphaDream, though, I understand why they just skipped to Inside Story). I guess I'm not really bothered by dark things in Mario games, lol.
-I prefer Super Mario World's Mario and Luigi sprites to Superstar Saga's (SS still has my second favorite Bros sprites)
-I don't really mind story in Mario games. Like, it doesn't need it, but I wouldn't complain if the next 2D Super Mario game had some minor shakeup to the "kidnap Peach, git her back and beat Bowser for that victory dinner royale" formula. Like obviously, it shouldn't come before making the game fun, but I think that, along with maybe some new types of worlds (Like a Space World) and some character from the vast family of Mario apart from Mario, Luigi, Toads, Peach, Yoshi, and Bowser/his children would go a long way in making "New Super Mario Bros 5: Newest of All Time" (or whatever the next New Super Mario Bros game is called) feel less samey, more than adding an occasional new powerup would anyways. (This is unpopular within my friend group)
-I actually care about Mario less for it's gameplay and much more about it's characters and especially it's setting.
-I think seeing the Koopalings as Boss fights in a 3D Mario game has tons of potential and I want to see that.
-Super Mario 3D Land's final Bowser fight is one of my favorite Bowser boss fights in any game, as well as one of my favorite boss fights period
-I liked Super Mario 64 DS more than the original overall (though I preferred plenty of things in the original as well)

Maybe I'll do more when I'm not a lazy moron

man, I agree with just about all of that, I think the only major difference for me is the gameplay is an equal factor for me alongside the characters&universe/visuals

and I haven't played Sticker Star yet but i feel like I'll enjoy it, also I feel like Sticker Star is probably popularly hated in many groups for betraying the original PM game mechanics

Now I just was reminded of one of my genuine opinions I have for the series but I'm a wait to say it on its own post

Mario can be largely storyless till the end of time and I would not give the slightest of fucks.

If I wanted a story I'd play something else. Stories in video games are dime a dozen these days and to be frank the actual storytelling potential this franchise holds is very, VERY little.

Liar, you know you want a Mario story where Stacien the evil zombie skateboard controls the fog machine that covers London and causes everyone to dance uncontrollably, and in the meantime shrink because they were invited to a dinner where free eats can't be beat, so Mario and friends have to dance to cross a river.

-Liking Color Splash isn't too unpopular on here, and while we have some people that also love Super Paper Mario, you get people (or, uh person maybe) that keep responding with "Story don't matter for me". So I guess there's a bit of a divide here. You're not going to get blasted out a Shy Guy's pirate ship for liking Super Paper Mario, though.

-I'm not particularly fond of Super Mario World's Mario and Luigi myself (don't like the colors, don't like the giant black hat him, don't like the back pockets, don't like the glove's positioning) and I do prefer Superstar Saga's sprites. That being said, Superstar Saga's sprites are used a lot so while I don't want to exactly say it's "overused" (if you're short on asset-making, Superstar Saga's sprites are really good and have a big library and should be at least not shamed for using the sprites but be aware it might not be the most suitable), they're not the highest quality either. Bowser looks bad, Luigi's mustache makes him look like his mouth is constantly open when Luigi is viewed from the front, Mario's arms look like they're glued to his body when he's walking and viewed from the front or back, and overworld sprites are actually different from battle sprites which can vastly limit your options.

-Can't say it's unpopular in the forum. A lot of people are asking for new world themes and a lot of people want characters beyond those 6 or 7, like Daisy, Wario, Waluigi, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Rosalina. This isn't a character driven series. They should go nuts with the amount of playable characters and have a roster just like Mario Kart. The biggest problem IMO would be the powerup designs, there has to be some thought and time being spent on them, but I don't think it's a big deal. But a lot of people would be excited to see a Small Waluigi reveal, a Tanooki Donkey Kong reveal, and so on.

-I also think I really care a lot for the characters too but the gameplay has to be good or it's pointless. Mario Kart Tour has a lot of characters, but it's just a thoroughly shoddy game and there's little for me to engage with the characters there. Not sure about caring for the setting. I like to see a variety of environments. Odyssey somewhat pushed the bill for character design since we got some highly detailed massive overcooked chicken and a ruins dragon, so I like to see they make a niche world where everything is highly detailed or something.

-They might, but Nintendo is doing nothing with them, has been relying on the formula since the Koopalings' inception, and has only invented new characters that just replace their fights (ahem, do you guys remember the Broodals? Yeah, has been a while since they showed their ugly mugs). I think there's more you can do with giant bone fish, Petey Piranha, King Bob-omb, Mecha-Wiggler. But you have to make the new bosses good too or you end up with Sorbetti and Rollodillo (who remembers those Galaxy 2 fights lol) or the weakest aspect of Odyssey.

-I prefer boss fights where you engage rather than run until you hit a goal, but I do think an obstacle course would make for a fitting boss fight given the massive combat constraints of 2D Mario platformers.

-Definitely agree here. I can live with the controls as long as Wario gets to go on a date in the area right below Chill Bully's platform. No shells.

- heathen opinion. then, godly opinion. partners in time is the best rpg ever made.
- i don't really like either sprite's and i think superstar saga's sprite style is abused to death in fanworks. partners in time and bowser's inside story have far better sprites.
- story is okay, i like it most in mario party and mario sports games.
- hey man, bd&a plush merchandise is pretty much how lgm and i got into the series. i still enjoy roleplaying with plushies with my twin sister to this day and we have quite developed, defined characters. building relationships with other characters is really fun, and i love how much of an open slate their personalities are!
- eh on koopalings
- eh on 3d land's final bowser boss fight
- super mario 64 ds is awesome and i love it more than the original.

but you said it would be nice to have a little context of what goes on in mario party games though...
