Mario doesn't look *terrible* in orthrographic, but he can look flat. Mario probably uses orthrographic for this this art (and its variants) because with perspective, his schnoz will probably look weird

A type of 3D modelling view which flattens out the contours of the model at the expense of any and all depth.

It is a fancy way of saying "no perspective". Since 3D models are really just representations of geometry, you can mess around with how the geometry looks.
