Unpopular opinions about the Mario series

I feel that kind of progression Mario has with Olivia over the course Origami King or Huey in Color Splash (or potential of progression if the progression is shallow beyond a significant event in that game) just can't be replicated if you have a partner system like in the previous games. I think what Origami King did with limited partners per chapter was the right thing because otherwise, the partners have very little development and that's just a limitation of the thing, something that's by design. I'm not sure if Tippi has progression with Mario though but again, she could've had it too.

Mario & Luigi games miss out on it, but Mario and Luigi do know each other well enough, and I reiterate, I think them doing things with each other and even interacting with their baby selves is a big reason I like Mario & Luigi more than Paper Mario.
 
Don't think loving Super Mario Galaxy 2 is unpopular. There are a few detractors on this forum, me included, but people dispute with me often about that game and I often have to make a case for myself why I dislike its existence (and I hate it more than Sunshine, even though Sunshine is a worse game). It goes without saying people dislike Sticker Star, but I had to justify disliking Galaxy 2.

Tbf, the graphics in Super Mario Land are terrible by Game Boy standards. Like there are plenty of Game Boy games that came out the same time that at least look better than it.
 
Super Mario Land is pretty outclassed by The Six Golden Coins anyway.

...... relatedly??? i think i kinda like sunshine more than galaxy (im sure this is an unpopular opinion)??? DEFINITELY NOT gameplay wise and im probably just biased because i like the sunshine npcs and setting so much,

The graphics in Super Mario Land are indeed more resembling of NES era graphics, and the Game Boy brought us things like Pokemon (though that had ugly sprites), Super Mario Land 2, and Kirby's Adventure, so I'm sure Super Mario Land could've looked better. I think that and Super Mario Land 2 are pretty due for a refreshing new game, why not give it the New Super Mario Bros. look. I know I normally don't like the style that much, but I think it'll look pretty fresh on games like Super Mario Land 1 & 2. Or just make a Super Mario Land 4. Or a New Super Mario Land.

I like the world of Sunshine. I'm not sure where people are getting at when they complain about the lack of visual variety in the locales. You *can* have variety in a tourist destination. And I believe there is enough variety in Sunshine, and there is a strong unifying theme among most of the locations, which is a benefit compared to the other way of having completely different climates (which all other Mario games do and it can get predictable; there's going to be an inevitable snow location, a beach location, a mountain location, a forest location).

I mean, there's a lot of things to see and do in GTA V and it takes place mostly in a Los Angeles ripoff and it's mostly sunny. Sure, there's a desert you drive to sometimes and the beginning of the game sets you in a different place all together, but I mean, if there can be interesting visual variety without getting out of a small measly part of California, then you can introduce such in Sunshine.

That being said, I don't like Sunshine's level and collection design a lot and the controls take time getting used to. Sunshine plays worse than Galaxy but I like the direction better than Galaxy. It's like the intermediate point between Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Odyssey I think, where Odyssey improved on the collection aspect and its "gimmick" implementation (Cappy is more smoothly integrated than FLUDD IMO) as well as QoL such as teleportation and removing lives.

yeah the gameplay in sunshine is only sort of neat at best and outright painful at worst. the structure that forces you to play through some of the stinkier shines just doesnt help, and it just overall feels rather clunky
i still kind of love it though just Because of the world and npcs and dialogue, and the fact that its just super memorable otherwise, even if not often positively

I actually disagree. The Mega Mushroom allows you to Kirb Stomp your opponents to the ground,
The POW Block is a good catch-up mechanic,
and the Thunder Cloud is basically a get hit your funny item. If you get it, you have a chance to pass it away to the next player.
Then again, that is an unpopular opinion.

Thunder Cloud is the worst easily but the other two aren't bad in my opinion.
 
Ironically, the Thunder Cloud makes you faster. But you do have to get rid of it before it turns you tiny.

As for the POW Block, if you're on the receiving end of that item, it can really mess you up whenever you're taking a sharp turn.
 
The Mega Mushroom makes you low pitched AND it's hilarious getting knocked around by someone with the Star invincibility or a Bullet Bill.

Also I make it a point to purposefully fall off using the Mega Mushroom just so I can hear the low-pitched yelling. It's always funny.
 
I dislike the items introduced in Mario Kart 8 more:

The Piranha Plant takes too long to go away which is a problem in the Wii U version where you can only hold one item. It may cause you to miss the next item box.

I don't know why I hate getting the Boomerang item, but I just do. I always just try to get rid of it as quickly as possible.

Super Horn is the only good item introduced in this game, as there's finally a way to defend against the blue shell. But it's so rare and most of the time I end up using it against a Red Shell thrown by second place.

As for Mario Kart Wii's items:

POW Block can be easily avoided by shaking the Wii Remote or pressing up on the D-Pad so that you don't lose speed. You also won't lose half of your coins in Battle mode.

I like the Mega Mushroom in Mario Kart Wii only. This item is crap in Mario Kart Tour because it no longer increases your speed or lets you take off-road shortcuts, and getting hit by anything turns you back to normal size. Also, a Mega Mushroom frenzy is one of the worst frenzies in the game.

Thunder Cloud is bad, I agree.
 
the boomerang is the best item you can get in battle mode what are you talking about

Fine, I'll admit that it's a good item in battles, but I really hate getting it in races. It's kind of, too powerful, I guess? I feel like a jerk for using it which is why I just try to get rid of it.

That's a good point, but you'll still lose your items unless you're in the air. Thankfully, Mario Kart Wii has a lot of instances where you'll be in the air.

As I said on my previous post, that item can still mess you up when you have to drift to avoid going off-road, or falling into an abyss.
 
I actually LOVE the Peach escort mission in Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga…mostly because I'm a grinder when it comes to RPGs, so by all means…kidnap her.
 
Sticker Star is unironically pretty good, people just fail to see that and focus on what the old games have that sticker star doesn't to build their case on why it's bad when it's actually not. Its battle system relying on consumables isn't even a detriment because you're never realistically gonna run out of ways to attack and the enemies are weak enough where you can throw a fucking hat at them and they commit toaster bath, allowing for some experimentation. The battles themselves also go by very quickly and never feel like a chore to get through, and if you feel like the battles not mattering because exp isn't real hurts the game... then simply avoid battles and enjoy the good level design that doesn't only consist of rectangular rooms filled with enemies and is actually pretty cool to explore, even with nothing but a hammer. That and the world map facilitates traveling between places so you don't have to actually walk the distance.
 
Pmss showed me that a full on digital Mario adventure card battle game would be really fun, if baddies can be used as cards too.
