The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (Spring 2026)

I don't think naming it after an entry a few games later means it can't also incorporate elements from the games that released between then. The name is probably because of the prominent inclusion of Yoshi. And unless we were really gonna go for "The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, 3, 4. etc" naming each one after a different game is a good way to go.

I'm dreading whatever story they give the Koopalings if they appear though. They absolutely won't touch the original story that they're Bowser's kids with a ten foot pole because they still insist Bowser Jr. can't coexist with that. But it's the only story that feels right to me. And if they DO somehow go back to the Koopalings being his kids, it'll be a movie-exclusive divergent canon thing and probably mean Bowser Jr won't exist in the movie universe which is also not ideal.

Personally I'm excited for this. It's been three years since the original Mario Brothers movie came out which means Nintendo and Illumination and Universal have had enough time probably to perfect this sequel and address any potential flaws, although since I like everything Mario I would probably enjoy it anyway even if it was bad. But anyway, yeah, really excited about this. Would love to see the Koopalings make an appearance personally. Also although I respect Wittgenstein's opinion, personally I'm fine with either story of Bowser's kids, whether the Koopalings ARE his kids or not, or the now new canon where Bowser Jr. is his only son, and either canon being portrayed in the movie is fine with me. Sorry this was a bit long.

I wonder if anyone feel even older from since this movie was first announced. As in, the time when Nintendo made the surprising announcement that they would team up with Illumination to make a film. It has to be noted that this studio wasn't seen as a good fit for Mario by some, mainly because of Illumination's reputation compared to other studios. Of course, the film's eventual success basically assuaged any doubts even though it's not like the finest movie ever.

With that said, Nintendo seems to be holding the cards for this film because the only glimmer of information is the new title that was accidentally added in a web article. I'm looking forward to see what kinds of characters would be included, because the first movie has some surprising inclusions like (Foreman) Spike and Pauline.

Thank you for reading.

@winstein Not really that much older since Mario Movie 1 was announced LOL. Just two years older. And Mario Movie 1 was just two years ago. 🤣

Also what do you meant Illumination isn't a GOOD movie studio? They made "Despicable Me" and "The Secret Life Of Pets"-both of which were smash hits. Heck, I think even their sequels were pretty popular, too. And "Despicable Me" was literally the FIRST film they made-they were just starting out. That alone is just amazing. Sure, "Migration" wasn't objectively that good, but I expect the studio to at least still put out a few more bangers in the future.

I quite liked Migration. I don't think it was great or anything but definitely enjoyable.

I do not know if you remembered, but the news on Nintendo and Illumination's partnership was announced in 2018. Meaning the film had a 5 year period between announcement and release. But Illumination, as good as they are with what they do, didn't garner the same praise as other companies like Disney or Dreamworks Animation because of their reputation of lowbrow humour. In other words, some animation studios make movies for the art, while some create them primarily as entertainment (Illumination is the latter)

I think that, even though Illumination was seen as a worst possible studio compared to Disney/Pixar or Dreamworks, they do have the right traits that made them the best possible partner, no matter what the naysayers would say. Most notably, the creators have a strong partnership, and it's helped that Illumination has a better handle on budgets. In any case, I feel that despite the partnership, it's unfair to pin everything good about the film solely on Nintendo, because I felt that both of them contributed their strengths on the film.

Of course, the fact that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a success basically quells any concerns or criticisms regarding the Illumination partnership, but they weren't seen as a guarantee before the footage was revealed (lest we forget, that voice casting video with Chris Pratt as Mario was criticised and lampooned).

Thank you for reading.

@winstein Yeah I agree with you. But although movies and cartoons when you make them being an art is the most important, they also have to be interesting and entertaining. I mean that's why people watch stuff-they want to be entertained, as well as enthralled in the story. Like, you can have something that is masterfully and beautifully made, but if it's not entertaining or interesting enough, what's the point? But yeah I agree with all your points.

It would probably make sense if the sequel is named "The Super Mario World Movie", just to coincide with the first movie being named "The Super Mario Bros. Movie".

I personally always thought Illumination was overhated. Their overuse of the Minions when Gru, a vastly superior character, is right there, is my biggest gripe with them. I enjoyed their Seuss adaptations and I enjoyed every Despicable Me (though I won't deny they got progressively less enjoyable and 4 was just whatever). I will concede that me liking some of these movies may be due to the fact that a lot of these formulaic and safe kids movies tropes still fucking work on me, and I'm not sure if they ever won't tbh. I grew up with a lot of movies that used them.

But yeah no Illumination movie I've seen was worse than "alright" so I never got the fear that them making the Mario movie would be its undoing, especially with Nintendo working closely with them. If anything I was more afraid Nintendo would impose restrictions on it to prevent anyone outside the most recognizable cast from appearing. I was pleasantly surprised by the deep cuts in the movie, both in character appearances and just references in general. But I still hate that Toadsworth was cut in favor of a Toad that serves basically his role but complies with the alleged modern Toad design sheet. I hope they find a way to rectify that in the sequel. How, I'm not sure, if he existed in the movie universe you'd think he'd be in the first one. But they could say he's returning from a vacation or something.

The first seemed like it got chopped up and slimmed down to an excessive amount to cut corners because it was the best-looking and most detailed Illumination movie at its release. The Mario movie was the first time the studio's output actually wowed me, they're cheapskates and it shows for most of their films, they're shiny but animation-wise bland. Making it had to be more expensive than they were used to, and it showed because that thing did not take a second to breath because that would've meant sacrificing more poor precious innocent money.

I hope this sequel is actually good story-wise and doesn't wind up coming across the same issues, I'm cynically cautious though.

I hope Princess Daisy makes it into the next Mario movie and also I hope Luigi is the main character alongside that!

KInda weird to go into space when they barely explored their take on the Mario world as is but whatever.

Monty Mole and the Super Mario World level theme. Already a 10/10.

I'm surprised they are doing their take on Mario Galaxy so soon after the first movie. So I'm guessing if there's going to be a third movie, its going to be based on Odyssey or even Sunshine. (If only for the faker plotline).

Well don't think it's good news to diehard mainline fan. I know Galaxy is gold, but feels unnecessary to skip some important moments throughout the timeline. In a macro view that doesn't leave much room for a third movie?

Yes since Yoshi is confirmed seems like Mario still has to visit other kingdoms first. However not sure if it would also cover abit more places and other unused main cast.

Remember the announcement for this movie on Mario day back in 2024. In that announcement there was a Lego Bowser playing a Lego piano behind Chris Meledandri. In this most resent direct however, the Lego bowser is replaced by a Bowser amibo. Very interesting.

Maybe it's because
Bowser got shrunken at the end of the first movie, so he's been replaced on the shelf by a smaller variant.
