Sequel to The Super Mario Bros movie announced

I don't think naming it after an entry a few games later means it can't also incorporate elements from the games that released between then. The name is probably because of the prominent inclusion of Yoshi. And unless we were really gonna go for "The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, 3, 4. etc" naming each one after a different game is a good way to go.

I'm dreading whatever story they give the Koopalings if they appear though. They absolutely won't touch the original story that they're Bowser's kids with a ten foot pole because they still insist Bowser Jr. can't coexist with that. But it's the only story that feels right to me. And if they DO somehow go back to the Koopalings being his kids, it'll be a movie-exclusive divergent canon thing and probably mean Bowser Jr won't exist in the movie universe which is also not ideal.
 
Personally I'm excited for this. It's been three years since the original Mario Brothers movie came out which means Nintendo and Illumination and Universal have had enough time probably to perfect this sequel and address any potential flaws, although since I like everything Mario I would probably enjoy it anyway even if it was bad. But anyway, yeah, really excited about this. Would love to see the Koopalings make an appearance personally. Also although I respect Wittgenstein's opinion, personally I'm fine with either story of Bowser's kids, whether the Koopalings ARE his kids or not, or the now new canon where Bowser Jr. is his only son, and either canon being portrayed in the movie is fine with me. Sorry this was a bit long.
 
I wonder if anyone feel even older from since this movie was first announced. As in, the time when Nintendo made the surprising announcement that they would team up with Illumination to make a film. It has to be noted that this studio wasn't seen as a good fit for Mario by some, mainly because of Illumination's reputation compared to other studios. Of course, the film's eventual success basically assuaged any doubts even though it's not like the finest movie ever.

With that said, Nintendo seems to be holding the cards for this film because the only glimmer of information is the new title that was accidentally added in a web article. I'm looking forward to see what kinds of characters would be included, because the first movie has some surprising inclusions like (Foreman) Spike and Pauline.
