Your pet peeves in the Mario series

This goes beyond pet peeve but Mario on drugs jokes aren't funny. Anybody who makes them is a hack with comedy.

I agree. I think it's what we call "boomer" comedy. It's on par with "Mario is the real villain" and it actually coincides and makes the jokes worse. It's so obvious, predictable, lazy, juvenile, narrowly-scoped but it's used so often because the general audience understands it almost immediately. There's also my massive peeve on how references other media make about Mario is very frequently on the original arcade game and Super Mario Bros., and it's the same problem of general audience. Wake me up when we get a joke of Yoshi riding on horses, Mario Party being violent, Mario and friends' ridiculous branding in their world via sponsors, Mario and friends idea of volleyball involves flying spaceships and violent wrestling, or Mario smuggling alligators for his soccer games, because even at minimal effort, they're still more original.

Mario isn't dumb, he's just a bit stubborn.

I wasn't thinking about his stubborness, I was thinking more he just sits there and has other people talk for him. It feels like a weirdly passive role for someone who's supposed to be a main hero and driving the story.

I personally can see Mario's personality. It's not as extravagant as Luigi's, sure, but it's still there. Like, a small detail I always notice is Mario always has more of an angrier expression compared to Luigi. (Best seen with the M&L series) The true empty character is Peach.

Oh and I got one: I hate dumb Mario shippings. We've got Luigi x Wario, Luigi x Bowser, Mario x Dr. Mario, Dr. Mario x Mr. L, Mr. L x Luigi, ect.
I lied another one is making Luigi gay. I understand where it's coming from but I personally dislike it. Because once we make him gay we're not gonna stop there nono he needs to want to be a GIRLLL. OML I'm triggering myself...

I always see Mario as more of a "no nonsense" person who wants to get things done and fast. He just doesn't seem like a reflective person. And to be fair, I don't think Peach is really empty, she's just passive. But she still has some personality, she's nice and polite, regal. But in Paper Mario and in Thousand-Year Door, she manages to be rebellious and courageous, being integral to sabotaging Bowser in both games, and remain in character, which I think is a better way to show how Peach can fight back without making her aggressive (unlike Super Mario Adventures).

I don't have a real strong opinion on relationshipping (in desperate attempt to avoid boat jokes). I think they're ultimately harmless, but I can imagine even the joke ones can get pretty grating when it's proposed often.

Everyone in the Marioverse is ace. Just, full stop. It's my pet peeve when people confuse sexual attraction/sexuality with romantic attraction especially in discussion involving "family-friendly" characters, and it just casts asexual people under a shadow. And I guess it's also good to bring up a pet peeve when people think Rosalina needs a partner when she doesn't need one.

From what I see, Mario's personality mainly revolves around positive qualities rather than flawed ones (examples: Luigi has fear, Wario has greed and Waluigi has jealousy), and I guess people consider positive traits as bland?

In case you don't know how Nintendo outlined Mario's personality, here's a reference from a 1993 guidebook. Although it has been many years since, the fact that nothing in the recent years contradicted the information below shows that Mario's personality is more or less consistent.

Yeah, I've been arguing that positive traits just tend to be overlooked or downplayed, so hence I argue those traits Mario has should STILL be considered personality. And it's not fair to Mario when the rest of the cast really aren't much better. This overlooking of positive traits also seems to apply to Peach, too, actually. She doesn't have the backstory that Rosalina has. Daisy is... well,I don't think people say much about her personality, but I also disagree that Daisy has no personality.

When people use Paper Mario artwork in completely unrelated memes, or in anything where they just want to reference the Mario series in general and probably don't even know about the Paper Mario series.

it being Paper Mario doesn't change anything, you should be more concerned over the quality and originality of these jokes

I think Paper Mario in an irrelevant meme would be indicative of at least laziness of a joke, lending to cheapness and poor impressions of a joke; it detracts from the meme. If you can't bother researching what Paper Mario is, I can't imagine the joke to be any better.

Count me in as somebody who does not approve of drug jokes in relation to Mario. Although the mushroom could be associated with drugs, it's a very tasteless thing to do because it felt like the person who made the joke wanted to ridicule the world of Mario or the people who love it. There are very few jokes that made it acceptable, and the only one that came to mind is Grand Theft Mario (that Robot Chicken parody).

It's not related to Mario, but my distaste for the drug jokes is very similar to my distaste for the horrific abomination of Garfield: attempting to twist something that is meant to be enjoyed by everyone and making it as unfriendly as possible. Although you can say that it's fine that some people like it, the problem is that eventually the "joke" will leak to more friendly places and that would ruin it for others.

What I am saying is that the frequency of the tasteless and insensitive joke eventually ruins it for other people.

legit look up mario on google images or whatever and i bet one of the first results is gonna be Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Mario Jumping Artwork
and yeah these jokes that amount to What if cute video game charcter was an asshole also with pointless violence XDD!!!!!!!!!!!! are annoying as hell regardless if its being applied to mario or not

To comment on the tastelessness, part of the reason Mario + Mushrooms jokes are immediately appealing to the general audience is that drug jokes coincide with adolescent shock humor, what teenagers think what adult humor is and not actually caring about the sensitive real problems of drug abuse or respecting the Mario source material, or what adults think that shocking = funny (also why Garfield jokes you don't enjoy are like this). I think the shock factor of drugs juxtaposed with the friendly image of Mario invites for such a joke, but as I said, it's way too obvious and lazy, it lost whatever surprise, if it ever was a surprise, a long time ago, and surprise is supposed to be a key element of jokes.

I also think the Paper Mario artwork is very clean and simple, easy to read and recognize, goes very easy with a simple mono-colored text. And if you don't know Mario that well, you may assume that the Paper Mario is just a stylized 2D Mario, but still Mario for all intents and purpose. Sure, you can argue that there's a wealth of 2D Mario vector images but they're not as easily found if you don't frequent MarioWiki or search properly; even a Google search of "Mario" shows none of the 2D vector art (though you get some art if you search "Mario 2D", but even then, only the first 2D vector I've seen is suitable for a meme, and that's on DeviantArt.

I mean, there's no punchline for those jokes. It's just trying to make fun of a opposite juxtapositioning. That's pretty much it. It's a cliche at this point, as trite as "cute soft nice character has an anger button"trope.

I wish I can be paid a job to write pointless articles on some of the most pointless and boring mods of Super Mario Odyssey, on the other hand.
