To be fair, a console that lacks the following Wii U features:
  • double screen play
  • touch screen in home console mode
  • Miiverse
  • free online play
  • an internet browser
  • any kind of video streaming application
that has a minimum battery life of 2.5 hours in handheld mode and that has as launch game a Wii U game from Nintendo that it struggles to run at 900p in home console mode doesn't look much better than the Wii U to me... let's hope that at least the internet browser and video streaming applications will be added with software updates, the latters should be, regarding the former I think it will, although I fear it was left out on purpose, because of the ease of finding and using kernel exploits that ultimately weren't fixed on the Wii U.

And yes, I'm going to buy it with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as soon as I can afford that, but pretty much as "tax" to play the new Nintendo games.

Now this system sounds terrible.

Aw man, no internet browser? Two of the only times I use it....gone....!?!?!?

Oh wait, Switch has a screenshot taking application. That's awesome....

...noooo muh Loadiine!!! :'(

Pretty much expect a browser and some streaming applications to come eventually, be it with an update or right at the start.

Like we haven't seen the UI like at all yet except for four seconds so for all we know a browser is really already in there.

Then again we need external apps for chatting anyway so it doesn't need a browser to be a functioning gaming system.

https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Nintendo-Switch/Specifications/Specifications-1176277.html#1

it has been officially revealed a few days ago, no browser at all.

But, if you think about it, a lot of the missing features are connected to the fact that in docked mode you can't use the touchscreen. If it was just portable with HDMI port on the Switch itself, many of the cut features could have been implemented, but then it would have just been the most powerful handheld system, in direct competition with 3DS and its successor, rather than a proper successor of the Wii U. I guess the idea of docked mode and the removal of features came from this design decision, forced by the placement of it as home gaming system.

Well, a system that has Super Mario Odyssey, the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe can hardly be called terrible, it just failed to meet my already low expectations and I found that just sad - and pretty annoying considering I was going to buy the console anyway for the new home console Mario games...

I'm actually happy with The Switch not having a browser. I buy a console to play games, if I want to go on browser I'd go on my phone or my ipad.

wii u already has Mario kart 8 and splatoon and is getting breath of the wild
Which pretty much sums my point: the Switch doesn't seems to be really catered to Wii U owners until probably the end of the year.

Well, you're going to need your phone or iPad for some of the console's online services anyway ;)

yeah ok but just because there's a browser doesn't mean you have to use it

a lot of people use their console browser as their primary browser

more like their primary bowser

Kill me

so in Japan the online service is going to cost less than thirty dollars

that's not a bad price, it's just a shame that the online functionality is still shit

You mean $30 a year?

2000-3000 yen yearly supposedly.

Which is $30~ for me, still significantly better than the $70 PS+ year price.

I actually never had a paid online console until recently and once I saw the PS+ cost I was actually a bit worried about the Switch's online price. Do the free games add a ton to the price or are they just trying to tie a vacuum to my bank account, because I couldn't give a rats ass about free games I don't want and will never play.

that's not bad at all, i don't see why people thought this was going to be the worst shit ever

nah that's pretty great actually solely considering the price of its precedents ps+ and xbox live

it was gonna be the worst shit ever because people expected the price to match the other services and offer less but at least its now actually proportional to the garbage they're offering tbh

http://wwg.com/2017/02/01/nintendo-is-working-on-vr-for-the-nintendo-switch/

if this is real then i wonder if it means nintendo is looking to either revise the current hardware for the switch, develop a specialised vr headset or both

this does make the outlook on the life of the console seem great either way

i mean $30 is still outrageous for what's a glorified skype service

I was expecting Mario Land for Nintendo Switch, a remastered version!

especially when yearly subscriptions get so much higher then that too.

Skype

The almighty overlord of video chat, texting, and Xbox Live replacement.

The Switch online is cheaper than say PS+ or Xbox Live. That's a good advantage.
