Ya know, it's not normally like Nintendo to announce a Direct a couple days ahead of time... I don't know if I should be concerned about this or not •_•
 
Even though Ocarina of Time is my favorite Zelda game, I felt that the Zelda Direct was kind of weak to be honest. I felt there were a couple cool features for the Ocarina of Time remake, as I liked the new graphics, better camera options and that you can play the ocarina with your mic now. But like, it just feels lackluster to me that the big thing this direct is announcing is just more information on a remake of a video game that was already remade before for the 3DS.

Lol, I heard someone say in the live comments "MINISH CAP?" and for a second I thought Minish Cap was going to be announced to remade too. And that would actually have made me feel more interested because while the game is smaller scale than Ocarina, at least with that game, it would have been the first time it was remade. But nope, that person just misinterpreted something

Even if there was a little bit more information on the Zelda movie, or there was some other Zelda game announced even that was a smaller game, like Echoes of Wisdom, I could have felt a bit more lenient but this was definitely one of the Directs I cared for less. I'd give this a 4/10, at best.

I mean, they announced a ton of stuff but skipped over all the silly collab stuff that normally makes up the bulk of these things, which really concentrates the viewers opinion on the direct to the four big deals of the orchestra, the movie, the game, and the special edition Nintendo Switch 2. Other directs can paper over their flaws with quantity, but this one chose not to. While some people would like skipping to the meat of the direct, I came here to watch advertisements and am unlikely to mind if Nintendo hypes up more advertisements. Of course, I'm not a Zelda fan, which means my opinion isn't all that useful but...
  • The orchestra medley goes on for a while. I think its too long for what's supposed to be a bunch of announcements.
  • The movie is one of the headlining features of this direct, and what did we learn about it? Title and release date. And its not even a title that allows for interesting speculation since its just "The Legend of Zelda". At least show us a landscape, or a character.
  • The Ocarina of Time segment is what we were here for, and it goes well enough, but we're hyping up table stakes for 3D adventure games like camera control and jumping. I wish they were focusing on playing the ocarina with the microphone.
    • That might have been a good point to introduce the Playable Ocarina and Electronic Ocarina merchandise, in a way that would be memorable. (Though showing off a normal instrument like a recorder or clarinet before the merchandise would make it look less shilly.)

Minish Cap on Switch 2 sounds like it would be really cool since extra processing power would let it play up the aspects of being shrunken in ways older systems could not. Imagine the heightened level of detail in one of the miniturized dungeons...

Some remake for Switch 1? There's a lot of users that don't have the Switch 2 so just a remake would be nice, please Super Paper Mario remake!!!

-Metroid Ravenous
-you can now play Choco Island and Vanilla Lake in VS Mode in Mario Kart World (everybody's been clamoring for this)
-the usual anime fantasy games
-third party stuff you can play elsewhere
-zero new Mario, Donkey Kong, or Wario game (as usual)
 
That Direct was... eh. Like, it had stuff I know will excite SOME people, but nothing that really made me excited. Kirby looks cool, but this is the second time 3D Kirby has been the closer in the past four years and it doesn't have the same novelty as the first time. I was expecting 3D Mario, I will admit, but - in all fairness - the same rumors also said we were getting a new Metroid, and Metroid Ravenous did happen (though the game looks friggin weird). Personally, I'd give the Direct a 4/10, it felt mostly like a Partner Showcase wearing the skin of a General Direct.
 
A meh direct for me as well. As a fan of it, Meccha Chameleon coming to consoles already is really surprising to me, and some of the Switch 2 editions announced were also up my alley. Excited for the Kirby game of course, but otherwise not too much was exciting. 5/10 for me
 
Nintendo Directs like these make me so glad I am not a Mario Kart World fan, what a godawful, underwhelming game all around.

So, basically: It was as bad as the previous Direct but this time we had Kirby and Metroid
 
I felt extremely mixed on this Nintendo Direct. Anytime up until the last announcement, I was ready to call it the most horrible out of touch Direct I had ever seen, and give it a 2/10. It grated so much to me how it kept giving remake, remake, remake, small Indie announcement, small Indie announcement, trivial game update, trivial game update. Even with the new Metroid game it just felt (at that point) like using the same playbook of E3 2021, of just having a new 2D Metroid game and that being the only decent element of the Direct. I was thinking the whole time, "this will be my least favorite Direct I have ever watched unless there's somehow a massive trump card at the end".

But then Kirby and the World Beyond game really did succeed in being a large trump card for me, maybe being my favorite Nintendo announcement in the last couple years. I'm very excited that not only is it 3D this time but it seems it will put an emphasis on an open world unlike what Forgotten Land did. I know someone else here felt like it was stale to have two 3D Kirby games near each other, but I think it has potential to be pretty different from Forgotten Land since with that game, it was level based. So I loved that announcement, but found the Direct to be about complete garbage except for that. So probably still an upper 4/10. This might be the most mixed feelings I've ever felt about a Direct though. It still feels like Nintendo making one excellent announcement and then using that one moment as an excuse to be completely out of touch the virtual entire rest of the Direct

I'll probably play Kirby and the World Beyond, and it'll probably be a good game; the issue I run into with it is solely that it was the closer in a Direct that was "leaked" to feature a 3D Mario, so it felt like a bait-and-switch, even if unintentional. (That first shot of the trailer looked very Mario-like.)

This is a good reminder that you should not believe every "leak" you see. Many people make things up to get clout, and if you're not careful you will set yourself up for false expectations and get disappointed over something that the people putting on the event (in this case, Nintendo) never promised you, which is honestly probably just as frustrating for them as it is for you. It reminds me a bit of this statement that was going around when Leon was leaked months ahead of time in the new Resident Evil game, and the game's producer had this to say:

"Sometimes I talk to people and they act as if various speculation and rumours are just already a confirmed thing, and then they start talking on that basis," Kumazawa told me. "I would like everyone to remember, let's calm down a bit - what we've shown you so far is everything we can say.

"People get frustrated with us, because even though we didn't promise things, the rumours and theories were such that they were widely believed."

It's worth noting, of course, that the leaks of Leon were legitimate, but it would have still been frustrating seeing people online get upset at something that you know people would be excited for if they just had a little more patience, and it would have been doubly frustrating if Leon wasn't actually in the game and people reviewed it negatively for that. Similarly, I'm sure Nintendo was absolutely fuming when they revealed a remake for one of their most beloved games of all time and the general online consensus was "oh, boo, they ended the Direct on something we already knew about."

Regardless, I don't know anything that is happening with Nintendo's game development pipeline, but I do know to keep in mind their general marketing strategies. After what's happened with things like the Wii U, covid and several announced games like Metroid Prime 4 and Zelda Tears of the Kingdom taking forever to come out, Nintendo now generally prefers to only reveal their big games up to 6 months in advance. You can see this with big titles like Super Mario Bros. Wonder (4 months from announcement to release), Mario Kart World (5 months from teaser and 2 months from title reveal to release), Donkey Kong Bananza (3 months announcement to release) and even this year's holiday title Zelda Ocarina of Time (5 months from teaser and 2 months from gameplay reveal to release). Smaller games like Star Fox have even had 1 or 2 month reveal -> release cycles. Games like Xenoblade Genesis or Tomodachi Life are generally exceptions, announced for a specific purpose like showing Switch 1 owners that there'll still be something for them after Switch 2 comes out. The point of all these examples being: don't stress out about no new Mario in a September direct. Realistically, the only thing we would have gotten is another sports game releasing at the start of 2027, but that already just happened a year ago with Mario Tennis. If anything, it's probably a good sign that something Mario related is important enough to save for the second half of 2027, whether a 3D Mario or something like a Luigi's Mansion.

If you see a website posting about a "leak", I would recommend taking it with a grain of salt, and take note of the name of the leaker so that next time one of their "leaks" get posted, you can check where it came from, roll your eyes and move on with your day. Being able to have a little discernment when it comes to these things is a valuable skill. And if it does turn out to be right, well, you can be happy that the game is real, not that the broken clock was right.
Anyway, since I'm here I'll post a couple of quick thoughts. In keeping with the spirit of what I put above, I've learned over the years to keep my expectations at rock bottom, so anything that does stick out is a nice surprise. Cynical? Yes. Effective at curbing disappointment? Also yes. Worked well for this Direct, especially with the weak feature segments in the first half of the Direct. Opening with a Monster Hunter game you can buy now on other platforms that we already knew was coming to Switch 2 was certainly... a choice. Anyway, my favourites, in order of airing:
  • Star Fox Adventures available now is fun, always happy for more GameCube games and this one looks kinda goofy so I'd like to give it a try at some point
  • Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is finally coming out, I'd like to pick it up if I have the money to spare in December. Seems like a modern but familiar take on the series formula, which I don't mind at all. Funny that they're announcing a Yokai Watch remake though, I guess now that this one is coming out, they need another game to endlessly delay while they move on to locking in and then delaying the release of Decapolice a couple more times. Never change, Level 5.
  • I've been waiting for the Switch 2 Edition of Pikmin 4 to come out ever since they updated the game this time last year without adding any Switch 2 resolution enhancements, so I guess I'll finally be playing my first Pikmin game (which I bought over a year ago)
  • One of the very few actually newly revealed games, Metroid Ravenous is looking great. I've still yet to play Dread (or Fusion) but definitely looks like a fun new entry, very flashy. Kind of surprised they're releasing it only a year after Prime 4, and also in January which is usually the time they throw out a port of an old game, but hey who am I to complain.
  • Kirby and the World Beyond looks very nice. Obviously we only have early impressions, but I like that we're following up from Forgotten Land with a big swing. When Kirby's Return to Dream Land got followed up with Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot, those were both refinements of the formula, making incremental changes to the established formula until you got to the best, most fleshed out version of it with PR. Forgotten Land was a big jump, and probably one of the most seamless leaps from 2D to 3D I've seen in this series, thanks in large part to it's carefully crafted linear levels, with fixed camera angles to give them the ability to make detailed and interesting environments that still follow that "room-based" Kirby formula that's been around since the beginning. They could have iterated on that style with a sequel, but nope, this game is taking a big swing by going some version of "open-world" (at the very least, "open-area"), and there are big moveset additions that seem to be making it easier to traverse these larger environments, both horizontally and vertically. To be honest, I'm a little bit cautious about the change - big and open often means empty and boring - but I still appreciate that it's going for something substantially different rather than sticking to what works. I think the setting seems pretty interesting and compelling so far, with a similar level of intruige as Planet Robobot and Forgotten Land, which isn't a necessary component to a good Kirby game, but is always appreciated. Regardless, definitely a day 1 purchase for me.
