What non-video game characters would you like to see in Smash?

One of the comic strip characters would be a dream come true (but not sure for other people. After all, comic strips is not a popular medium).

- Popeye is one character I would like seeing, because of his historical ties with Nintendo.
- Garfield is another character. Certainly that Nickelodeon fighting game gave him a move set, so maybe we can reapply some of that into Smash?
- Snoopy is an unexpected pick, but if Villager from Animal Crossing works, maybe there's hope for Snoopy.

Thank you for reading.
Sure I'd like that! I like Garfield and Snoopy and all that. And Popeye is a classic!

Since this is an old thread it's interesting to note that there have been several platform fighters or "smash-likes" to put it more crudely released with non-video game characters now.

Anyways, for smash particularly I think it would be funny to add characters specific to non video-game adaptations of video game franchises. Even though I personally think the show is cheesy and low quality, I'd still get a kick out of seeing Kevin/Captain N from "Captain N: The Game Master" show up as a fighter.

If you aren't familiar with the show (you aren't missing out on much), it's a cartoon from the 80s about a teenager who gets taken from the real world to go on adventures in worlds very loosely based on video-games found on the NES. (loosely to the point that it's obvious that the show-runners didn't even take the effort of looking at the games' manual.)

My top two picks for non video game representation would have to be either SpongeBob or Luz from The Owl House

Someone else said it would be cool to have comic characters like Garfield and Snoopy and Charlie Brown and all that in Smash and that would be pretty cool. I love those old comics. Also I'd really like to know who made that request, I thought it was really cool.

Why do I feel like Mickey Mouse would work so well in Smash Bros? I mean, he stars in the Disney Epic Mickey games (never actually played them tho; I've only heard of them).

I'm a bit of a purist here and say they shouldn't do this. If they did, and I had free reign on picking... I would say we should have Team Rocket's Meowth as a playable character. So much of Super Smash Bros. takes from animated interpretations of Pokémon, and one can technically say an villain coded-Meowth can just barely fit a video game centric series because of Pokémon Yellow. I also like the idea of letting characters from adaptions of media in, but I say that this should not be used to put in alternate versions of characters based on those adaptions. (So Tiff and Tuff, sure, but no to Super Show Mario and Movie Mario) Some other pitches that I could agree to:

Characters who have starred in popular licensed games would further Smash Bros. being a celebration of gaming as a whole.
  • Scrooge Mcduck
  • Batman
Characters in non-video game media that is heavily based on video games. This isn't just in a sense of the characters playing or being sucked into a video game, media where the world is structured on very video game-y tropes and conventions also count.
  • K.O.
  • Prohyas Warrior / Vambre Warrior
  • Wreck-It Ralph
  • Parzival (Ready Player One)
Characters in non-video game media who are in universe video game characters?
  • Sky Whale? (Its a character from a real game which is meant to be in-universe flagship release of the fictional company Game Shakers, the core group of a television show named after the company billed to be about making games. I personally despise Game Shakers but going through the logical hoops to justify this would make me laugh-cry enough to counteract it.)
I would also be willing to have any of these characters show up as collectables, as well as some others who I didn't pick for playable like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. (They have a long gaming legacy, but you really can't have just one of the four playable. They're like the Koopalings in that the only acceptable result is that all of them are playable, and I cannot justify having a Super Smash Bros. game feature all four turtles as playable characters.)

I saw a pretty cool Chandra Mii Gunner on Amiibots the other day. There could be cause for getting board game characters, card game characters, and tabletop RPG characters involved. For me, this would mostly mean Magic: the Gathering characters. (And it's not like there haven't been Magic: the Gathering video games, including characters who debuted in them before getting physical cards.) I could see some other options, many of the "their game is inspired by video games" variety. I'd try to avoid the "character is an expy of a character already in Super Smash Bros." ones though, they just won't feel right being directly next to their direct inspirations.

I feel like you could get away with Sam & Max in terms of characters who aren't from video games but feel like they are.
