MarioWiki Poll Discussion

3DS, Wii, Wii U, Switch, and I think at one point someone else's Game Boy Advance.

I've played Mario games on everything listed except an OG Game Boy/Game Boy Color. I do own some games for the system and have played several but that's the only hardware here I don't own.

"Time for a new day, but as we always say, neatness counts."
"That's right Mario, and by the way, you have a little piece of spaghetti on your overalls."

Hey there, this is the Shadow Prince, a member of the previous committee to give analysis on these two weeks' poll. This is certainly an interesting poll as whether you've preferred live action or animated Mario depends on what feel is more your cup of tea. Where of course the former means you're probably more likely to give a positive choice on this poll.
This has a thought-provoking list of options, such as even if you want more live-action emphasis whether you want it to be through mascot suits or actors. I always like when things are specific so those being two additional branches is a nice touch.

The Mario franchise has had live-action elements before (i.e. The 1993 film, The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!). Would you like to see more live-action content?
  • I enjoy live-action Mario content and would like to see more content of this nature.
  • Yes, although I would like to see more content with mascot suits, similar to the ones used in advertisement and web original shorts.
  • Yes, though I would prefer using actors in costumes, in the same vein as Lou Albano or Bob Hoskins.
  • I am fine with live-action content, though it feel as if it should not have priority among Mario content.
  • I feel as though that live-action content should be relegated to simple and minor forms, such as commercials or web original shorts.
  • I have no desire to see more live action content.
  • I have no opinion.

Option 3 for me I guess but I've felt more strongly about other polls; seeing how much they're able to make people in costumes seem like Mario and Luigi slightly interests me.

Option 6. Personally, I find the live-action Super Mario movie to be really bad, and the live action Super Show episodes can range from mildly funny at best to really terrible at worst. I like the animated content a lot more than the live action offerings, so I don't want any more of them in the future.

Hello, me again. I understand you were indeed a member of a previous poll committee, however, I feel as though that does not give you permission to post polls. FWD or another well-versed member of the current committee may correct me on this, but this ties back into what I said to you earlier: do not do a job that is not yours. Thank you.

Alright, let me step in for just a moment

It is true that majority of the time, you can expect the PC Chair or another member to post the poll in the thread. However, there's no explicit rule stating that it's just PC Chairperson/members that can post the polls. Obviously there's a sense of a courtesy period to let them mention it here, but I imagine that after four days of a new poll that courtesy period is fairly resolved

What I'm saying is that there isn't a need to target him for posting the poll when there wasn't an indication that somebody else was going to. He could have reached out to someone else, true, but he opted to post it instead, which honestly isn't that big of a deal in this situation

If you and the PC decide you want it to just be PC members who are able to post the polls in thread, that's fine, but let's have that be a rule that is firmly established so the precedent is there. As it stands, there's no actual permission needed in the act

option 6. there's no need for a live-action production signed off by Nintendo when creatively-bankrupt entities such as YouTubers, SNL etc. already have that domain fully covered.

i'm option 1. i think a lot of people are missing out on the concept of the mario movie being bookended by live-action segments with chris pratt and charlie day before they get isekai'd into animation. not because it would be like, actually good but i think it would be funny.

admittedly i suppose that's closer to option 3 because the idea is that they'd be in costumes, but to me the general emphasis option 1 places on Enjoying The Content takes priority. feels like 3 is more for people who are hardline against the Dennis Hopper performance

Now that Super Nintendo World Universal has opened, what are your thoughts on the Nintendo theme park?
  • I visited and enjoyed my time at the park!
  • I visited and I am not a fan of Super Nintendo World Universal.
  • I plan to visit eventually, and I am excited!
  • I plan to visit eventually, but I am skeptical.
  • I cannot visit at this time, but I want to.
  • I am not interested, and would rather visit other Nintendo attractions like Super Nintendo World Japan.
  • I am not interested in visiting any Nintendo attractions.
  • I have no opinion.
This one comes from @Lilac Gratz and @Waluigi Time, regarding the semi-recent opening of the Super Nintendo World Universal theme park. Personally, I'm probably either a 6 or a 7 here. I feel like the Universal park is just a gimped version of the Japanese park, and if I'm going to go to one of these, I'd rather at least bundle it with a trip to somewhere like Japan instead of going down to the US just to hang around what is almost surely an audience of mostly kids and the most annoying adults around.

That being said though, I'm already not much of a theme park guy, so maybe I'm not the best to answer this.

I like theme parks to some extent but I feel the same way. I much would rather go to Super Nintendo World Japan but that's likely because I already wanted to go to Japan anyway. My thoughts on the California park are largely indifferent.

Option 3. I plan to visit it eventually, and I'm very excited for when that day comes!

I guess option 8 for me? I'm pretty indifferent about it. I'm not interested enough that it's actively something I want to do, but if the opportunity came up somehow I wouldn't turn it down.

Now that it has been released, how do you feel about the Super Mario Bros. Movie?
  • I greatly enjoyed the Super Mario Bros. Movie and thought it was a good portrayal of the world and characters.
  • I enjoyed the Super Mario Bros. Movie, but I had a few problems with the story, characters or another aspect of the film.
  • I thought the Super Mario Bros. Movie was decent, but nothing special.
  • I did not enjoy the Super Mario Bros. Movie, because I thought the story, characters, or another aspect of the film was poorly done.
  • I have not seen the Super Mario Bros. Movie, but I think it looks good and I am excited to see it.
  • I have not seen the Super Mario Bros. Movie, but I plan on seeing it despite having low expectations.
  • I have not seen the Super Mario Bros. Movie and I have no interest in seeing it.

This latest poll attempts to gauge the general reception of the Super Mario Bros. Movie in our userbase, yet another of the various polls we've had this term regarding non-gaming Mario releases. A bit of a strange year, to be sure.

While some of you may not have seen the movie yet, it's received the honor of having the most successful opening weekend for an animated film ever, so I feel confident in saying that a large amount of you probably have - including myself, actually. This time, I'm going with Option 2, because while I did have fun watching it, I felt that the movie had some pacing issues and could have used some more moments with the characters where it slowed down a bit. I think an extra ten minutes could have done the movie some good.

An Option 2 person, coming much closer to 3 than 1 too as I'd give it a 7/10. As was mentioned by the chairperson, and as I've said myself, my biggest weak point with the movie is that it critically underdevelops a couple elements, namely
Luigi not having any development when being in the cage, even if it's lighthearted (like learning bravery from fun attempts to build morale, and get everyone out but that still fail) and it seeming to want to give Donkey Kong more depth but spending barely any time on it.

I am probably also closer to option 3 than option 1, though yeah, more because there wasn't enough development rather than actually disliking any of the characters. I liked the portrayals quite a bit, and I would have liked to see more of them interacting rather than less in favor of set pieces and action scenes.

Option 2. I liked the movie, but certain characters such as Luigi and Toad needed a lot more screen time in order to flesh out their personalities and goals. I also didn't like Fred Armisen's performance as Cranky Kong, and the real world songs in certain scenes (ex. Take on Me during the tour of the Jungle Kingdom, Thunderstruck during the scene where Mario and co. select their kart parts, etc.) felt out of place within the Mario universe and could've been replaced by music from the games.

Option 1 for me. Obviously it's not the greatest written film ever made, nor is it some deep emotional flick, but when I went to the theater I had a good time. The movie was fun, entertaining, and that's really all I wanted out of this.

I'd pick option two, as well. The movie was enjoyable - very fun stuff - and I didn't have any major issues with it. As a matter of fact, I found the score was, for the most part, great. I think it would have benefited from being just a tad less compressed, though.

New user here. The most important thing this movie had to do was entertain my kids, and it succeeded at that. So it's a 10/10 on that alone for me.

Critically, I agree that it lacked character development and it could've used a few more minutes of screentime, so I picked option 2 based on that. To me it felt like Illumination was afraid of their intended audience losing interest if the movie wasn't paced at a 200cc speed. It is a shame because I think they underestimate kids attention span, even more of a shame too since they just barely scratch the surface with hints of development only to cut to the next joke quickly.

Voice Acting was actually pretty good though. Even if there's some room for improvement - a bit more energy from Day and Pratt would be nice for e.g. - their performances still left me wanting to hear more. I would love to see more DK and Luigi in the future, given the movie is a massive hit and both of their actors have expressed interest in doing more.

The animation, action scenes, easter eggs (very fitting to release this on Easter weekend lol :D) and music were all superb.

I would give it an 8/10 personally. Again though, it entertained my kids for the full runtime, even up to the post-credits scene (not spoiling what it is, don't worry). So the movie succeeded fully for me in that sense.
