Mario Kart Series Discussion

Mario Kart is one of my favorite series within the Mario franchise, and so I thought I'd start a dedicated thread here for it. Pretty much just a place to talk about general things regarding the Mario Kart games such as likes, dislikes, what you want to see in the future, tips and tricks, etc. I own Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario Kart Tour, I've played Mario Kart World with friends and on Walmart and Target's Switch 2 kiosks, and I've played a bit of Mario Kart 64 and Mario Kart Super Circuit on the Switch Online + Expansion pack. I did briefly play Mario Kart Wii at a friend's house when I was little, but I barely remember any of that. However, in recent years, I've watched gameplay of the game. Additionally, I've never played Super, Double Dash, DS, or 7 but I have watched gameplay of those as well.

Mario Kart 64 is my first Mario Kart and I hate the game today so there's that.

The rest of the games are great though. Double Dash with crazy cheats is an experience, especially the cheat where everything blows you up, including touching walls, touching bananas, touching other racers, getting hit by a lightning bolt, etc.

I wish 3DS Wuhu Loop would come back in a future Mario Kart game. It's a really unique track concept. Perhaps it will come back in possible Mario Kart World DLC.
(Also, does anyone else think Mario Kart World could get DLC?)

I'm skeptical, but it's not impossible, given it's already happened in 8 and 8 Deluxe.

The 3DS had some great tracks! Wuhu Loop, Maka Wuhu, Rosalina Ice World, Rainbow Road. I'm glad Shy Guy Bazaar got in Mario Kart World, tho I think it loses its touch in the day time.

Nintendo is not obligated to do it, and by all accounts they were pretty much done with the game after it's released, but I would've liked there to be a Mario Kart 7 Deluxe in which the game is made with more time where it is more fully-featured. Of all the Mario Kart games, this one felt the least featured even though it technically has more than the first games (such as having online and a single player compatible battle mode).

It wouldn't hurt that Waluigi gets playable in the game, too.

Thank you for reading.

This goes for all Mario roster based spinoffs but I've always focused mainly on Mario Kart because it's the most well known & the one I have played the most. I really wish they'd pull from more Marioverse source material than they historically have. I feel like this is a game where it would be very easy to go all in on fanservice for every type of Mario fan, since there's no need to come up with a moveset or unique gimmick for each character the way a game like Smash Bros would need. And I also don't think it would alienate casuals, as they would still select the characters they're familiar with as long as they're there, and they aren't going anywhere. This is what I put together after Mario Kart World's first teaser as the type of roster I think Mario spinoffs should aim for. Niche should not mean "waste of effort" and I see it the other way around, characters could become less niche by being in a game like this and even lead new people to discovering their corner of the Marioverse. Mario has such a rich and diverse history and it just hurts so much that they continue to ignore 99% of it because it's not already familiar to a grandma.

There are characters whom I'd love to see playable in a future Mario Kart game, specificially Toadsworth, more Luigi powerup variants, the blue shelled koopa general from the Mario Movie, and a possibly a Baby Pauline character (if they ever decide to create that).

My ranking of Mario Karts I played in the last few years (excludes Mario Kart Wii since I haven't touched that in a decade.)

1. MK 8 Deluxe: very tight controls, roster is excellent (as of the BCP), graphics stand the test of time
2. Super Circuit: challenging but fun to learn, very engaging cup ranking system (with all its hidden criteria), has all the crispy goodness of 16-bit Mode 7 and pre-rendered CGI without the jank of earlier titles.
3. Tour (post-2022): addicting score-based single-player experience. If you're not in a panic to collect and upgrade everything at once, and just learn to enjoy the grinding, you'll have fun playing and accumulating rewards.
4. World: Allows you to pull off some sweet tech with its grind rails and wall driving mechanic. Open world is decent.
5. MK 7: Fun courses, pretty good overall.

.

5. Super Mario Kart: Man, the horrible controls make it unplayable if you're not looking to master it.

6. Tour (2022 and prior): essentially the same as Tour (post-2022) except I'm morally obligated to place it in hell due to the repulsive, abusive paid gacha mechanic.

Ever notice Mario Kart Wii's Bowser's Castle theme is just a creepy version of the Maple Tree Way theme?
Oh yeah! I saw Thomas Game Docs' video about that!

I would love to see a future Mario Kart game include a track based on the Paper Mario series of games. I think there'd be a lot of potential.

I was wondering if someone would give me some insight. So I was playing Mario Kart DS (As Dry Bones and on the Airship Fortress track.) Wario fell off the map (Right after the the big tower part.) and would just stay in 8th place even though he crossed the finish line before me. I have know idea why this happened?

It's Wario, that's how he is.

I hate Mario Kart World

The Arcade GP games are probably the weirdest in the series tbh. The fact that Nintendo and Bandai Namco teamed up on this one is beyond me. Also, you have 100 items in the game but you can only choose 3 of them? There's seriously some missed potential there! Imagine having 100 different possible items you could get when you get a item roulette box! 🤔

I wonder why Shy Guy was limited to Download Play in Mario Kart DS...🤨

At the time, they probably thought nobody would actually want to play as a Shy Guy.

It's the same team that took out the ability to play without items in Mario Kart 64 because their playtesters didn't play the option.

Glad they learned from their game-destroying mistakes though, now that Shy Guy being fully playable in Mario Kart 7 made the Mario Kart series finally playable for Shy Guy fans.

I'm finally used to driving in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe without using smart steering anymore! Now I just to need to play increase my VR online...
