Well I remember I asked the same question somewhere else, not sure if it's a repetitive post.

Personally, I think it's a letdown to not see RPG charatcers shine in new games via their re-introduction from the remakes, especially when new gamers have understood the charm of RPG characters yet have to say goodbye to them immediately. I know most of us old fans disagree with.

If we can only have one benefit, would you rather have RPG characters actually appear in new games and Nintendo didn't have to use the remake budget? Or you wouldn't regret getting the remakes from this timeline?

I feel like there's no good reason these have to be mutually exclusive. I'd pick all of the above. Though, I think care should go into which returning characters appear in another story driven RPG because it needs to work in tandem with the story without being forced. Unless you set out from the start to create a story around a big celebration of past adventures and their characters, in which case it would still need to be non-canon to get the most out of it (this is how Paper Jam should have been approached imo). I think the way previous RPGs have returned past characters is the ideal way to do it in most cases.

For Mario Kart/other spinoff rosters I feel the sky is the limit, just let loose and add in the fan-favorites, it's not a game with any sort of timeline or story it needs to adhere to. So even dead villains should have no problem being on the roster.

They should let Fawful and Vivian in Mario Kart. For that to happen, however, my impression is that someone on the dev team (or related to them) needs to have some attachment to these characters before they even lend a ear to fan demand. (For example, per Eurogamer, Daisy was added in Mario Wonder first and foremost because the game's director wanted to please his daughters, and only then was he like "uuh, yeah, I guess fans will like her, too, or something".)

I think my gaming habits are somewhat unusual in that I don't usually play remakes when I already have the original game available. I would be excited to see rpg characters return in new games, but knowing how the Mario series can be with continuity I fear they might reappear only to act as if they've never met Mario before.

There's no fourth option: I don't care about the RPG characters enough for them to return, and I'd rather they introduce new characters in the next RPG or they stick with the recurring core cast (which includes playable characters in Mario spinoff titles like Daisy, Waluigi, Toadette, Rosalina, Donkey Kong, etc.)

So I guess remakes is the closest option available to that...? I still don't think remakes are necessary either, they just need to re-release their games.

Couldn't care either way. Remakes hold little interest to me unless its a bad or meh thing with a good idea and whenever I play one of those spin offs I usually just play as Mario or Bowser so the rest of the roster I largely don't care about.

I honestly think characters like Toadbert and Toadiko from M&L rpg series should return as playable characters in Mario Kart, Mario Sports, etc. I think they're really underrated Toad characters with unique personalities from the others.

Toadbert I can see but Toadiko? She has like what, 6 lines of dialogue? She has no notable personality.

Besides, Toadiko should have been Toadette anyway.

I think when it comes to Toad playable characters, outside the glaring omission of Toadsworth I don't necessarily need further Toad characters to have their own slots on rosters. Would be nice to have, but in the grand scheme of things I think the characters wholly original to the RPGs would be the most appealing representatives for them, the ones whose entire species was introduced in those games.

Toad (or Captain Toad), Toadette and Toadsworth are suitable to be the main members of the species on playable rosters. Otherwise I think I just want generic female Toads and more preset design variants appearing as NPCs, including in audiences for Kart and Sports games, and more distinct individualized designs used when they put Toads in specific roles, like shopkeeper, innkeeper, mystic, banker, cook etc. This is also a great place to bring back past distinct Toad designs like Toadbert, Tayce T., or Dr. Toadley (though in the latter's case I also want the Merlon clan to have a stronger presence so I'd prefer an approach that allows them to coexist despite overlapping a bit in theming)

If they're playing a more distinct role than just filling space in the background their design absolutely shouldn't default to the standard one, but the space fillers should still include female Toads, and some variety in accessories and facial hair would be nice too. Nothing entirely individualized, but just more preset designs to sprinkle in than "colors of the regular design."

Basically, a new model sheet for background Toads that includes different hairstyle options, facial hair options, and accessories like glasses and a handful of basic outfits. Rather than just "here's the basic Toad design in different colors duplicated a lot"

The Super Mario RPG remake was fantastic and a real dream come true. I would still love if they made a proper Super Mario RPG 2, although I understand that due to character rights and frankly waning public interest, they're unlikely to ever do that. Back in the day I had been looking forward to Paper Mario so much, back when it was titled Super Mario RPG 2. When the game finally came out and I got my hands on it, I was pretty disappointed by how completely different of a game it was. I eventually learned to love Paper Mario thanks to Thousand Year Door, but it sure would have been something to have gotten a proper SMRPG2! The Mario & Luigi titles were sort of spiritual successors due to some key staff members working on those titles as well, but... they're just not quite the same! Really inventive battle system though :)

I get where you're coming from. To me, if we were to get a SMRPG2, I think it should star Luigi since he was literally only in the credits of the first one. I could also feature Princess Daisy as a supporting character alongside Mario and Peach, and Bowser would also be an ally.
