what do you think about new super mario bros 2?

"the original yoshi. he grew everyday"
i bought the game 5 years ago, i want to see what you think.

I actually enjoyed it a lot myself, and thought the whole coin thing was okay, but it's definitely a lot weaker than the first two NSMB games, and possibly worse than NSMBU. I found it a fairly short game which would be one of my biggest complaints about it.

Oh man I need to play this game again! Back in early 2013 9-year old me really enjoyed playing this game. I even cleared the secret final world but didn't 100% the game. I remember listening to the Reznor battle theme nonstop and jumped when I first encountered Boohemoth.

Boohemoth is an abomination

I'd say what makes it especially not good is the DS's primitive 3D-yet-very-pixellated graphics. Honestly I always thought the OG DS's graphics were bad for the time it was made. Very dated. I mean the graphics make the games you play on it look like primitive late-90s PC games honestly.

Edit: Oh wait I'm sorry LOL. New Super Mario Bros. 2 is on the 3DS LOL. It doesn't have DS graphics. As far as my opinion on its gameplay I have none. Looks all right; I'm going to watch a playthrough of it sometime soon. Sorry I wasted your time, folks.

I would say NSMB2 is worth actually playing if you can afford it (it shouldn't be too expensive) rather than just watching a play through on YouTube

I watch playthroughs because I'm no good at these games LOL. Same with really hard and complex games like Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy (which I've never been able to beat and so have watched longplays). I'm struggling just at playing the Mario and Luigi games on the 3DS! Seems as an adult I've gotten worse at some games. SOME games-certain games. Other ones I had trouble with when I was younger I can now easily beat.

Also this Christmas I'll be getting all three OG Spyro games for PS1 and playing them on my PS2; wish me luck everyone.

This thread made me want to replay the game.

I fully understand why so many people are annoyed with it--it's extremely derivative, has a very limited amount of new concepts, and ultimately does not stand out as a 2D Mario platformer. I'm too tired right now to properly elaborate why, but it feels more like New Super Mario Bros. Wii Remix than a direct sequel to the DS game. However, the level design is excellent and the overall gameplay is addictive as heck. As has always been the case, I'm having enough fun with it to completely overlook the things it fails at.

Yeah I've noticed most other people are too; it has a ton of good reviews on Ebay and Amazon. It's a fun game. It's not perfect, but I guess it doesn't need to be.

Practically the first Mario platformer that had me go, "you know what, maybe i don't need to play this" and entirely skipped it
Same. I remember loving New Super Mario Bros as a kid. One of my favorite games. I was so excited for New Super Mario Bros 2 and was bored within the first world. There's something so dull and souless about it. It's strange how there's this narrative now that it has the best level design of any New Super Mario Bros game. Not sure where that came from.

My first NSMB game was NSMBWii. My second I played was NSMB. I remember NSMB2 coming out and playing it for the first time. I remember the promotional art for this game looking very polished. I like how they stuck more closely to NSMB's game design. Because NSMB and NSMB2 were ment to be more of a single player experience.

I know that the NSMB games can bee a bit bland. But there are some things in the game that make it stand out, like the bonus worlds, super leaf, gold flower, long ? block, the slew of bone enemies, and the canon levels. I also would listen to the world map cloud theme over and over.
Never really liked the coin gimmick though.

I've never played NSMB2 since I don't own a 3ds, but I have seen gameplay of it and honestly it looks like a solid game. I like the coin collecting mechanics and the callbacks to SMB3. I also love that Reznor came back in this game. :boshi:

The little Mario game that said "I can be forgettable!"

It had the opportunity to take its gimmick in a direction that would've stood out among all the NSMB games (include Wario) but chose to instead be so safe that the gimmick almost feels like it's only there to be the sole differentiating factor. It falls flat when otherwise the game does nothing to bend its theme around it and take advantage of it.

It's actually the one New Super Mario Bros game I skipped, even counting New Super Luigi U, some of the coin gimmick ideas looked pretty fun, but I'm not sure they went far enough to justify the theme. Of course, I'd have to play the game to be sure.

It's super derivative but it's fun to play. It came out at a bad time.

I remember reading somewhere it was made by a new inexperienced team. It shows if thats true.

You're thinking of the Iwata Asks.
Yusuke Amano: But [Masaaki Ishikawa] and I were the only two core members of this project who had some sort of experience working on 2D Super Mario games.

I greatly appreciate The Cutting Room Floor for changing the extremely judgemental opening paragraph for New Super Mario Bros. 2 to a more level-headed one.
Old:
According to an interview with the game's directors, the development staff for this one consisted mainly of people who had never worked on a 2D Mario platformer before. It... it really shows.
New:
According to an interview with the game's directors, the development staff for this one consisted mainly of people who had never worked on a 2D Mario platformer before. This is evident in some odd (but not necessarily bad) level design choices.

Can you really begrudge New Super Mario Bros. 2, in full knowledge Nintendo had to make two different 2D Super Mario platformers at around the same time for the first time, and neither it nor New Super Mario Bros U. is actively terrible? In fact, if my memory serves me correctly New Super Mario Bros. 2 was solid (fine, maybe just okay) but unambitious. Even then, it's not lacking for attempts. Endless shiny gold coins are a plenty good distraction, especially with gold rings to mess with enemies. We got Dash Mario courses, which showed that removing free movement can make for interesting but difficult setpiece courses. The Reznors got to make a return appearance, and the idea of them standing on Rectangular Coin Blocks is still as cute a pitch as it was a decade ago. We got the endlessly replayable score attack mode Coin Rush, which is probably better structured than Boost Rush from the other game. (I don't recall Boost Rush being all that great without Boost Mode in use) Of the DLC, I only ever interacted with the free Gold Classics Pack, but that pack is a hoot of secrets. Including the game's first level but with "Oops, all Gold Blocks!" which is very silly. I didn't play DS's campaign or Wii at all, so this was my introduction to the Koopalings, and they really aren't half bad. (yes, it would probably be better if their shell phases were more interesting.)

I will admit New U is the overall superior game, any day, but has a 2D Mario platformer ever led players wrong?

With the gameplay I've seen of NSMB2, I also agree that NSMBU is better. Actually, I personally think that out of all of the NSMB games, U and U Deluxe are the best. Their gameplay is fun and their level design is creative. Also I LOVE the Flying Squirrel suit! It's just such a cute looking power up!
