Dr. Mario World

Is this game getting more updates?
The game is getting updates, but what it gets is probably not very well-known because characters are not very frequently added, which is you know, what people are most interested in. In this thread, it's usually when a new doctor gets announced that you will see a new post. You can bet that when Morton gets announced (probably in the next few days) you will see a new post about it. Mario Kart Tour's update frequency is much more well-known mainly because it's a more popular game from a popular series, and there are always some new character or variant announced.

With this game, it gets new content every week: a new area is introduced every two weeks (two areas form a World), plus a new Skill Summit every two weeks. Their introductions are alternate so on one week there are new stages in a new area and on the next week there's a new Skill Summit.

The VS also have specialists, which is where specific characters get boosts in their performance to gain an advantage that gets refreshed every week, but that's probably on a schedule so it's easy to predict who's next to be specialists and what the boosts are.

i thought iggy is the most popular koopaling?? why is he going to be the last koopaling to be added thats so weird

Morton is the best Koopaling and I will hear no different.

In case anybody wants to know ahead of time, Dr. Morton's ability is to convert ice fans and bubble machines into Empty Blocks, which removes the nuisance factor inflicted by them. Much like any of the doctors that removes a specific object (Bowser Jr., Koopa Troopa, Dolphin, Waluigi, 8-bit Dr. Mario and the rest of the available Koopalings), if that object they are supposed to clear does not exist, it will eliminate one random object (viruses take priority).

The assistant that accompanies Morton will be Galoomba, which is interesting since its relatives were added earlier: Goomba and Paragoomba were there in the beginning while Goombrat was added in World 9 (and is an Area 1 reward).

They need to plushify all Dr. Mario World characters. Yes, all of them.

I am so getting the virus plushies though!

I deffo agree. I would pay for the others in dr garb.

I'm also pretty happy this is another plushie that can be involved in Smash Bros. reenactment. I think a big chunk of Smash Bros. characters, if not majority, have a plush now.

The latest Skill Summit rewards Dr. Dry Bowser. Why is this significant? Because Dr. Dry Bowser cannot be obtained by drawing from the staffing pool, as he's only obtainable in purchasable packs outside the Special Stage. This means that there's a limited time to get a Level 2 Dry Bowser, which I managed to get (1 from Special Stage, 1 from Skill Summit). The main issue is how challenging some of the stages are, and there are also a few that requires specific doctors to play (Dry Bowser, Bowser Jr, Fire Rosalina and Baby Peach).

This is my personal viability list in the VS, which may not be a perfect representation but it's what I feel are currently viable. Therefore, it's subjected to change.

I have all the characters but I didn't use them all, with the only one unused being Dr. Boo. Also, some of the doctors are only of that viability at a certain level because their skill only started to become viable once they reached that level. Obviously all the doctors are at their best at Level 5 but some start to become useful at a lower level.

Really Great
  • Dr. Mario
  • Dr. Fire Mario
  • Dr. Fire Luigi
  • Dr. Yoshi
  • Dr. Donkey Kong
  • 8-bit Dr. Mario
  • Dr. Ludwig
  • Dr. Larry
  • Dr. Lemmy
  • Dr. Dolphin
  • Dr. King Boo

Great
  • Dr. Toadette
  • Dr. Goomba Tower
  • Dr. Koopa Troopa
  • Dr. Baby Rosalina
  • Dr. Wendy
  • Dr. Roy
  • Dr. Morton
  • Dr. Bowser Jr.
  • Dr. Kamek
  • Dr. Dry Bowser

Good
  • Dr. Luigi
  • Dr. Fire Peach
  • Dr. Fire Rosalina
  • Dr. Baby Mario
  • Dr. Baby Daisy
  • Dr. Baby Wario
  • Dr. Nabbit
  • Dr. Bowser
  • Dr. Blooper
  • Dr. Boo

Not Bad
  • Dr. Peach
  • Dr. Toad
  • Dr. Lakitu
  • Dr. Luma
  • Dr. Baby Luigi
  • Dr. Baby Peach
  • Dr. Waluigi
  • Dr. Daisy
  • Dr. Wario
  • Dr. Rosalina
  • Dr. Diddy Kong (only one Not Viable; we'll see if the upcoming character changes will change that)

Note that a few doctors will have some upward changes (in layman's term, buffs) in VS in the near future, them being Wario, Rosalina, Diddy Kong and Waluigi, but this is not taking into account those changes.

If there are any doctors you wish to know more of, you could mention which ones you want to know my thoughts of.

@Dr. Peach @Рождественский Рэй Трейс It's actually more of "Not Bad" than "Not Viable". The only one that's Not Viable is Diddy Kong. I've changed my post to reflect this.

I feel that Dr. Peach is only viable at Level 5, because of the 3 column clear skill (2 column clear is not very useful), while Baby Luigi only change 2 viruses. I will need to use Baby Luigi more after the score resets this coming Thursday.

Dr. Baby Luigi's shell doesn't even activate the second shell when it gets used, so if the second shell spawns in the same row as one shell, it's useless. His ability is pretty much outclasses by any doctor who can clear a row more than once. He probably needs a faster skill charge up honestly.

The game has be updated to the latest version, at 2.2.0, which means there are some changes. One change is a Power Rally Boost, which rewards the player for completing the stage without fail consecutively by providing free items, which is another way to encourage players to make progress.

Perhaps the thing that was changed that affected players the most is that the assistants Shy Guy and Banzai Bill have reduced effectiveness. Previously they have a flat -10 SP decrease, which means that when using certain doctors it allowed for consecutive usage of their skill. The doctors affected by this are Goomba Tower (Level 3), Koopa Troopa (Level 3), Dolphin (Level 3) and Luigi (Level 5). This was abused in stage mode for easy clears and Daily Booster for maximum rewards, and it became more and more well known that this is the update that sealed the fate of this exploit. Basically, the -10SP bonus is changed to -10% SP, which is a huge nerf because using the doctors I mentioned, each assistant only reduced SP by 2.

Previously it was kept a secret for fear that making it known will cause it to be patched, since this is a free-to-play game with random character drawing, meaning that such an exploit alleviated some of the game's free-to-play shortcomings. I suppose since it's patched there's no reason to keep mum about it any longer. Did I take advantage of this exploit? You bet I did. That's the reason I managed to get most of my assistants and almost half of my doctors to Level 4, with even a handful getting max level. However, I was only able to take advantage of it after the developers put a limit to Daily Booster so I can't get unlimited coins/doc tokens, which is to say I wasn't able to get a maxed out roster.

I got Dr. Wario to Level 5, my first Level 5 doctor! This is possible due to the staff rate up, where Wario gets this treatment so you have a higher chance of drawing him compared to other days. His ability is fantastic in stage mode, skill summit and daily booster, so having him at max level increases the frequency of the skill. He is also much better in VS now that his skill activates more frequently and he attacks faster.

Speaking of VS, the doctors that got upgraded perform generally better, from most improved to least:
  • Dr. Wario has the biggest upward changes in his VS performance, where he attacks faster and his skill activates more often. This makes him a lot better because he can activate his attack-prevention skill while still having high defences. It's especially useful with Fly Guy/Mechakoopa (increases attack fill metre for both players) because using the skill puts Wario at an advantage.
  • Dr. Diddy Kong has an attack metre reduction, which means he attacks faster. This is needed because previously Nabbit was better as he attacked faster AND has a better skill. Due to Diddy attacking faster, he can join the ranks of Toadette/Goomba Tower/Baby Daisy as a fast attacker that has an advantage against opponents unlucky to have low 2-bomb defence.
  • Dr. Rosalina's attack metre fills faster compared to before, while still retaining the defences. It makes Rosalina a bit better but she still have the issue of being slow. At the very least if you can use her skill often it can eventually slow down or even pressure the opponent.
  • Dr. Waluigi's skill increases the amount of dust he can add to the opponent's viruses, but otherwise he's still the same. The best application for his skill is to immediately use it after his attack connects or clears the board, because it would give the opponent less time to react to new viruses. He still requires a good degree of skill to function, since his skill is more of a distraction that could buy time for the player.

Very nice to see that at least this game takes out the duplicates from the possible pulls when maxed out!

Lol at the communication error when you try looking at the probability tables, at least they put a message when you try staffing again...
