Your 20 Character Roster

I never thought of the possibility of a Goomba Tower as a playable character in a Mario game, that's kind of a hilarious thought.

I actually only said (well, typed) that because I could think of any other non-clone, non-paper, non-Koopaling characters that I particularly wanted, but now that I think about I'd quite like it.

19) Ludwig von Koopa (replace with Larry Koopa if Mario Tennis because Superstar Saga)

I'm serious, I would be more than okay with those minis.
 
I just realised that none of these lists have the best character, giant claw.
 
That was challenging to make, despite the colourful cast that Mario provides. My roster excludes the Koopa troop, especially Bowser, to fit in as many "good guys" as the roster size allows. I apologise to Bowser-lovers for excluding him from this list. In the end, I represented each Generation, from early Arcade to Nintendo Switch.

While you're pretty right in classifying these as good guys, considering the infographic of the Mario Portal, it's odd to think that Birdo, Wario and Waluigi started as villains, with Wario in particular being the main villain of Super Mario Land 2, now considered part of the Super Mario Bros. series by Nintendo.

I like to think that the characters that you mentioned look like they could be good guys, even though they aren't known to be lookers. I guess being essentially human for Wario and Waluigi helps. Birdo looks more like a supportive character than an enemy, though I find the decision for her to be used in Wario's Woods as the "good guy" a pretty interesting choice.
