This is very canon.

The mario series takes place in a huge, thick, rocky, interplanetary (maybe interstellar) atmosphere, with huge planets. It houses many species, like turtle-like humanoids (koopas), humanoid protofrogs (wart), two human subspecies (new donkers/mario's subspecies), iron-silicone based organisms (bob-omb, bullet-bills, chain-chomps), earth-sized silicon based organisms (moon in super mario oddysy), fungus-like aliens (mushroom kingdom and toads), and various other species.

From 2001-2017, the worlds of Mario and all other Nintendo characters are flat pancake-shaped planets with holes in the middle, and they can only do anything when their home planet passes through a small dark area with a powerful laser beam. Here's what the planets look like:

What about the Pokimans?

Their main games were on handhelds.

Does it apply to the cartridges as well?

flat donuts!

SMRPG takes place in an alternate universe. This AU is also the same continuity as the Mario & Luigi games, as evidenced by Geno's cameo in Superstar Saga.

Waluigi is actually an accomplished sportsman. He doesn't have time to go on whimsical adventures because he has an actual job
Tennis is obviously his forte, but he's also quite skilled in many other sports

Tanooki Mario speaks fluent Russian and him without his neckscarf makes him feel very naked.
