PTR averages ratings on different Mario series

It's much better than its predecessor. The level design is much better, more challenging, and more creative. The level interface is streamlined. There are less of the silly star missions (Hi, :luigi:). The Green Stars are indisputably better than the Luigi Stars. The final level is much more...

    New Super Mario Bros. U

I got all of them (except the Co-Op Gamepad challenges) a while ago. As far as I know, there's no prize for securing all gold medals, but the reward is in the challenges themselves. Highlight of the game.

    Hardest NSMB game?

Crackin, you're ignoring the fact that DKCR is the hardest Nintendo game in years and was still hugely successful. The ideal situation that would please everyone would be as follows: -Make a Mario game about as difficult as SMB3 -Include some form of the Super Guide for amateur players -Add...

    Super Mario 3D Land

Crown-8 is well worth the effort, as it's one of the most challenging and creative levels in the series.

Yeah, getting mad is a little extreme, but pointing out flaws and discussing the game on a critical level is fair game.

    Paper Mario: Sticker Star

I was actually one of the people saying that SS didn't really sound that bad, although after watching playthroughs, it's got many serious problems on a technical level. The big problem is that Miyamoto is single handedly responsible for these missteps, which is inexcusable. And if criticism is...

    Paper Mario: Sticker Star

Oh, Miyamoto. So you let the R&D B-team develop the atrocious NSMB2 without much oversight or supervision, but proceed to meddle with Intelligent Systems and bring the project in a terrible new direction? Concerning a game in a genre (RPGs) you have no real experience with? What a senile moron...

It's the best part of the game. Mario titles rarely cater to the hardcore, and this is right up my hardcore alley. :yoshi:

Super Mario Bros 3 VS Super Mario World

On the flip side, SMW has bigger levels, Yoshi, and a vastly superior world map. Not to mention the challenging secret world and better boss fights.

Super Mario Bros 3 VS Super Mario World

This guy knows what's up. I voted SMW. Both are terrific.

    New Super Mario Bros. U

Several categories of challenges (IIRC, 5), including time trials, coin collecting, and "special" challenges such as the one previously mentioned about not running. If you even tap the dash button, the game kills you automatically.

There are a couple Challenges that take the 9-8 level and make it absolutely ridiculous. One forces you to beat the level without running.

People need to re-think their votes after NSMBU, which is easily the best game of the NSMB series by several miles.

    New Super Mario Bros. U

I don't know what's a "treat" about farming for extra lives when you've probably maxed out your lives anyway. It's inexcusable and should be ridiculed by everyone. Still a great game. EDIT: I've been up all night playing the Challenge Mode, and it is wonderful. Very creative, and even the...

    New Super Mario Bros. U

Completed the game 100%. Total of 76 levels, so I assume the "goal total" is around the same as SMW's. Not bad in terms of content, and many of these levels are very long. Opening up secret exits interconnects the worlds in rather humorous ways (roller coaster, pipe stairs, etc.), and I have to...

    New Super Mario Bros. U

Mario games have never been known for their creative boss battles, but among the 2D games at least, NSMBU has the best, most consistently fun bosses by far. Most of the Koopalings have entirely new attack patterns, and many integrate their world themes into the fight itself. Wendy, for example...

    New Super Mario Bros. U

Just finished the game, so time for some more reflections. Spoiler tags are awkward, so if you don't want to be spoiled, don't read my posts from here on out: -Final world was disappointing and generic; those who told us that the game saved its "best for last" obviously didn't have World 8 in...

Your Rating for New Super Mario Bros U

Serious answer: through World 6, this is a 9.5/10 game. Only thing holding it back is the recycled music. EDIT: Change my score to 9/10. Extra World was disappointing, final level blows.

Having just completed World 1, here are some of my initial thoughts: -As a system, the WiiU is brimming with potential. As one of its more vocal critics, I've been pleasantly surprised with the gamepad; its resolution looks even better than my new TV! Though it's a little big, I've got large...

Mario games you don't like the title?

His point was that New Super Mario World would be a bad title, as the game is not a sequel to SMW. My point was that new Super Mario Bros., despite borrowing many of the same elements and feel of the original game, had no direct connection to SMB despite the title overlap. Meaning that his point...

What is your favorite Paper Mario game?

TTYD for sure. I loved how the paper aesthetic finally became a mechanic of exploration rather than merely a unique look, and the writing and supporting cast were fantastic. Sticker Star looks like my kind of game though, so we'll see if that vote stands.
  41. Legault

Mario games you don't like the title?

As opposed to New Super Mario Bros., which was clearly a direct sequel to SMB. :-\

    New Super Mario Bros. U

I have no problem with this. I've seen some of your other posts that indicated to me a more defensive attitude, but forgive me for reading too much into this particular comment. Any updates on the final world? Eager to see if Nintendo took a more ambitious approach with the last few levels.
  43. Legault

    New Super Mario Bros. U

This is a bad attitude. After all, they're not forcing any of us to even play NSMBU, right? Why complain at all? The thing is, criticism has an important role to play, and it can even be fun to analyze what games do right and what they do wrong. Deflecting criticism strikes me as somewhat childish.
  44. Legault

Your Rating for New Super Mario Bros U

Honestly, you're being a little generous. Nintendo clearly didn't pay attention to the angle of the dangle and really missed out on an opportunity for a racing sequence to the hospital during Peach's pregnancy. 7/10 overall; disappointingly enjoyable.

    New Super Mario Bros. U

Most people have assumed this from the beginning, and it's a pretty sound guess. Now that we've learned about this mysterious purple...

    New Super Mario Bros. U

I could tell you why I loved Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing and it'd still be a questionable opinion. There's a reason SMW is considered among the definitive 2D sidescrollers. Given the rampant score inflation in video game critical culture, an 82% is a rather poor score, especially for a...

    Your opinion in NSMB2

You could add a coin tracker to just about any Mario game and get the same effect. Strikes me as lazy padding.

    Paper Mario: Sticker Star

This is probably the thinking. Still, the sticker mechanic could've been adjusted to incorporate partners in a non-sticker role, and given all the fan backlash, I'd say they made a mistake here. But like I said, I'm less critical of the new direction than others.
