MarioWiki Poll Discussion

You know, this is the type of thing is like, the older I get, the more video games I play and get into, the less I give a shit about official canoncity and continuity in fictional media, and this rings especially true for a video game franchise that has never prided itself in its storytelling potential, favoring fun gameplay loops. I've never became a fan of the Mario franchise because of its storytelling potential or reading into analyses about character personalities and lore (because frankly, the characters don't have much, if any at all). I got into it because it had a wealth of fun, multiplayer-oriented spin-offs covering a wide variety of genres such as Mario Party, Mario Kart, and Mario Sports titles, and it rings true today. For me, part of the fun of characters is adapting them to my own personal headcanons and stories and characters, filling up personalities and preferences and worldbuilding with my own flair, ignoring some crap the big company mandate thinks that wouldn't suit my own personal worldbuilding (I still grasp into the "Koopalings are Bowser's kids" idea because it's a cooler and more interesting idea than them being just his minions).

Do I appreciate when there are unique takes? Yeah sure. I did quite like some of the unique hosts in Mario Party and the grungy sci-fi aesthetic of Mario Strikers titles. Do I have particularly strong opinions about it? Not really. Do I ask for Mario Strikers to be referenced in New Super Mario Bros. 4? No really. I'd prefer games like Mario Strikers stay in their own lane, doing their own thing, and I honestly am more bothered if themes get watered down derived the main Mario platformer aesthetic, ie New Super Mario Bros. themes going into Mario Strikers: Battle League than the other way around. Though, those themes *can* work in Mario Strikers, it just needs to be integrated well.

Notice how I talked about thematics and aesthetics and mood over characters when pertaining to games? Yeah there's not much to speak out about regarding them. I don't feel much for them, at least, in the "official" capacity. It can be fun to integrate them into my own world I guess. Maybe I'll reference Rogueport when my characters, teaming up with Mario, have to stop Xenomorphs from Aliens teaming up with Doom monsters invading the city and abducting civilians.

tl;dr just give me Mario Warriors and have 170 playable Mario characters from The Mario Multiversestop Hyrda, Orochi, Wishbone, Feldspar, Harvestman, Bismuth, and their 10 thousand generals named after spider and snake names, that'll be the coolest Mario game ever.

New poll is up on the wiki! This one's all about airborne power-ups, made by me!

Several power-ups in the Mario franchise grant Mario and his allies the ability to fly and glide in unique ways. Which one is your favorite?

  • Super Leaf (or any of its variants)
  • Super Cape
  • P Balloon
  • Carrot
  • Wing Cap
  • Red Star
  • Bee Mushroom
  • Boo Mushroom
  • Propeller Mushroom
  • Propeller Box
  • Lakitu Cloud
  • Super Acorn (or any of its variants)
  • I like a power-up not listed above.
  • I have no opinion.

Repping Super Acorn (& Friends). It does a little of everything. Need to get to a high place? Extra high Spin Jump as well as a double jump. Need to correct a jump? Glide and/or double jump. Need to go really far or control a long descent? Gliding. The only thing it doesn't let Mario do is attack enemies. Its also, of the 2D platformer power-ups, one of the easiest to use. The Cape Feather's flight often requires route memorization to get ts full value, and winding up for take off as required for the Cape Feather and the Super Leaf can get tricky in tight spaces. Supar Acorn always just works. Sure, the acorn could stand to have a movement pattern more interesting than "roll forward" but the ability to be held by Waddlewings halfway makes up for it.

Hello everyone, a new poll is up, so head to the wiki's front page to vote if you haven't already then come and discuss it here! This one's about the costume feature that seems to be fairly popular in games lately.

Certain Mario games have included the ability to dress up the playable character in various costumes as a feature. How do you feel about these costumes?

-I think that costumes should only be applied to signify that a power-up is in use as was common for most of the series (e.g. Fire Flower).
-I would prefer that the option to play as different characters be used instead of costumes.
-I like the inclusion of costumes, but only if different costumes provide some kind of game-play effect such as resistance to a type of damaga (e.g. Donkey Kong Bananza).
-I like costumes, and I think that they should just be a cosmetic option for the player to express themself.
-I think that the best way to use costumes can be different depending on the intended design of the game.
-I don't really care about costumes as a feature, but it doesn't detract from my enjoyment of the game either.

The costumes were some of my favourite parts of Odyssey and Bananza, but whilst I feel like the abilities they came with in Bananza fit well, I also feel like Odyssey wouldn't have benefitted from such a feature. So I have voted for 'I think that the best way to use costumes can be different depending on the intended design of the game.'

why do all the positives have to be "I like costumes but". where's the I love costumes unconditionally and they are awesome button. I will be voting for that.

I suppose that would have been a good option to have in hindsight, I think the closest is option 5, which could imply a liking for costumes in general, but I see that there could have been an option more specifically for those who always like the inclusion of costumes in general. Thanks for the feedback, and I'm sorry that the poll options feel limited this time around.

Honestly? Any game that has costumes is an instant favorite of mine. That's another reason why I like Mario Kart Tour because that game has LOADS of costumes while Mario Kart World is a close 2nd. I do wish the NPC characters got costumes though, especially the ones who were playable in previous Mario Kart entries.

I would probably rather have more characters than designs. I'm just one for default appearances, even if you throw in a bunch of extras I'll usually pick the default after messing around.

Unless we're talking about RPGs, I would shy away from tying stats and other boosts to clothing options. Doing this tends to force people into choosing clothes they don't like for the gameplay benefits. This tracks for RPGs, where getting increasingly gaudy and bulky with time goes with the genre, but outside of that it does lessen the appeal of having visual customization.

August's final poll is brought to you by @Koopa! He's made one about crossovers in the Super Mario franchise and wants your opinion on how you feel about them!

The Mario series has had many crossovers with other franchises. How do you feel about these?

  • I strongly enjoy these crossovers and want to see more.
  • I enjoy these crossovers when they come around but don't look forward to them.
  • I have mixed feelings on these crossovers and feel their execution varies.
  • I dislike these crossovers but don't care if Nintendo stopped them.
  • I strongly dislike these crossovers and don't want to see any more in the future.
  • I only like it when crossovers occur with other franchises I like.
  • I have no opinion on this subject.

we're never particularly excited for crossovers, mostly because at this point there's. absolutely a bit of cynicism surrounding them by this point in the current media landscape. but for whatever it's worth, nintendo in particular is pretty good at picking their battles on this front and whatever crossovers do happen are generally pretty high-quality, rather than of the "using fortnite battlepasses as an evolution of the licensed tie-in game trapped on the game boy advance or DS" flavor. not to be all "oh well MY corporation's better" because, surprise, the corporate entity is just as fallible to mistakes as anything else, but also, uh, yeah no nintendo does just straight up have a better batting average for crossovers we personally like.

look, when the conversation involves wario blast, we can only be so cynical, considering that game was the one that made us originally learn how mediawiki table syntax worked. and, uh, look where that lead us to. ;P

I kind of wish this poll was more in-depth with its choices. I would vote for an option that said I was fine with crossovers as long as they are other Nintendo franchises, but as-is I'd have to vote for a "strongly dislike". Not a fan and I don't see the appeal outside of pogging and pointing at the screen because you recognize that thing.

The thing with Nintendo crossovers is that, with the big exception of Super Smash Bros., they didn't really do intra-company crossovers. As in, the type that combines the two properties in a way that lets the characters interact with each other. Taking something that's inter-company, like Mario and Sonic, that is what I mean. In that series, we've seen Mario and Sonic characters interact with each other, and allow them to explore each other's worlds. Or how about the Mario version of Puzzle & Dragons? It's a Mario version of the game, and even include Tamadra (the mascot of Puzzle & Dragons). Mario and Pokemon had this merchandising crossover, which is already pretty unusual because they don't tend to do intra-company crossovers already, but that's to the extent of it: there isn't a video game with both of them.

Which is why I think it would be interesting for Nintendo to explore this aspect, where two different universes get a mashup. It might have been why that StarFox and F-Zero rumoured crossover had so much interest, even without seemingly have any basis in reality. But I imagine that there's a risk involved. If that happened and it became popular, it might affect the viewpoint that each individual IP feels incomplete as a result, which I suspect might have been the issue with Puyo Puyo Tetris when there are already two games in this series and is looking to be the only way Puyo Puyo can ever gain traction outside Japan.

Because of that, I just picked the "crossover with franchises I like" option. It's a more personal and simpler option, I feel.

Thank you for reading.

I sort of disagree. There are plenty of intra-company crossovers. Link and Samus appear in SMRPG in the form of cameos, Link and Animal Crossing characters are in MK8, as are F-Zero courses. Link's Awakening has Mario enemies, Mario Maker has the Master Sword that gives you a whole new gameplay style. F-Zero, while lacking the explicit Star Fox characters, does have a crossover reference in the form of one racer.

There are more examples than this, but there's at least a number of cameo or character appearance that, IMO at least somewhat count as "crossovers". The poll itself never states that they are explicit crossover games, just crossovers in general. I think either the poll should've been more specific in this regard, or counted enjoying intra-company crossovers as an option.

My opinion is somewhere between option 2 and option 3.

Nintendo usually does a pretty good job at making sure that all series are represented with quality and accuracy to their original depiction, but I prefer games that develop their own original worlds, and the announcement of crossover elements doesn't make me any more excited for a game. I think that some series have themes that make them more compatible with crossovers than others. For example, If you put Mario in a Modern Military shooter, it wouldn't feel right.

I feel like 'crossovers with franchises I like' pretty much covers this.

I don't feel a need to have this be a separate choice, as the two options would naturally overlap with each other and would end up leading to messy results. Your feedback has been noted though.

It's not really "franchises I like" though. I don't really care that much about Animal Crossing at all and even kind of dislike it, but I was fine seeing Animal Crossing content in MK8 because it felt like a natural fit due to both being Nintendo properties. Similarly, I like Devil May Cry and Resident Evil, but I think a Mario crossover with those franchises would be a terrible idea.
