MarioWiki Poll Discussion

You know, this is the type of thing is like, the older I get, the more video games I play and get into, the less I give a shit about official canoncity and continuity in fictional media, and this rings especially true for a video game franchise that has never prided itself in its storytelling potential, favoring fun gameplay loops. I've never became a fan of the Mario franchise because of its storytelling potential or reading into analyses about character personalities and lore (because frankly, the characters don't have much, if any at all). I got into it because it had a wealth of fun, multiplayer-oriented spin-offs covering a wide variety of genres such as Mario Party, Mario Kart, and Mario Sports titles, and it rings true today. For me, part of the fun of characters is adapting them to my own personal headcanons and stories and characters, filling up personalities and preferences and worldbuilding with my own flair, ignoring some crap the big company mandate thinks that wouldn't suit my own personal worldbuilding (I still grasp into the "Koopalings are Bowser's kids" idea because it's a cooler and more interesting idea than them being just his minions).

Do I appreciate when there are unique takes? Yeah sure. I did quite like some of the unique hosts in Mario Party and the grungy sci-fi aesthetic of Mario Strikers titles. Do I have particularly strong opinions about it? Not really. Do I ask for Mario Strikers to be referenced in New Super Mario Bros. 4? No really. I'd prefer games like Mario Strikers stay in their own lane, doing their own thing, and I honestly am more bothered if themes get watered down derived the main Mario platformer aesthetic, ie New Super Mario Bros. themes going into Mario Strikers: Battle League than the other way around. Though, those themes *can* work in Mario Strikers, it just needs to be integrated well.

Notice how I talked about thematics and aesthetics and mood over characters when pertaining to games? Yeah there's not much to speak out about regarding them. I don't feel much for them, at least, in the "official" capacity. It can be fun to integrate them into my own world I guess. Maybe I'll reference Rogueport when my characters, teaming up with Mario, have to stop Xenomorphs from Aliens teaming up with Doom monsters invading the city and abducting civilians.

tl;dr just give me Mario Warriors and have 170 playable Mario characters from The Mario Multiversestop Hyrda, Orochi, Wishbone, Feldspar, Harvestman, Bismuth, and their 10 thousand generals named after spider and snake names, that'll be the coolest Mario game ever.

New poll is up on the wiki! This one's all about airborne power-ups, made by me!

Several power-ups in the Mario franchise grant Mario and his allies the ability to fly and glide in unique ways. Which one is your favorite?

  • Super Leaf (or any of its variants)
  • Super Cape
  • P Balloon
  • Carrot
  • Wing Cap
  • Red Star
  • Bee Mushroom
  • Boo Mushroom
  • Propeller Mushroom
  • Propeller Box
  • Lakitu Cloud
  • Super Acorn (or any of its variants)
  • I like a power-up not listed above.
  • I have no opinion.

Repping Super Acorn (& Friends). It does a little of everything. Need to get to a high place? Extra high Spin Jump as well as a double jump. Need to correct a jump? Glide and/or double jump. Need to go really far or control a long descent? Gliding. The only thing it doesn't let Mario do is attack enemies. Its also, of the 2D platformer power-ups, one of the easiest to use. The Cape Feather's flight often requires route memorization to get ts full value, and winding up for take off as required for the Cape Feather and the Super Leaf can get tricky in tight spaces. Supar Acorn always just works. Sure, the acorn could stand to have a movement pattern more interesting than "roll forward" but the ability to be held by Waddlewings halfway makes up for it.

Hello everyone, a new poll is up, so head to the wiki's front page to vote if you haven't already then come and discuss it here! This one's about the costume feature that seems to be fairly popular in games lately.

Certain Mario games have included the ability to dress up the playable character in various costumes as a feature. How do you feel about these costumes?

-I think that costumes should only be applied to signify that a power-up is in use as was common for most of the series (e.g. Fire Flower).
-I would prefer that the option to play as different characters be used instead of costumes.
-I like the inclusion of costumes, but only if different costumes provide some kind of game-play effect such as resistance to a type of damaga (e.g. Donkey Kong Bananza).
-I like costumes, and I think that they should just be a cosmetic option for the player to express themself.
-I think that the best way to use costumes can be different depending on the intended design of the game.
-I don't really care about costumes as a feature, but it doesn't detract from my enjoyment of the game either.

The costumes were some of my favourite parts of Odyssey and Bananza, but whilst I feel like the abilities they came with in Bananza fit well, I also feel like Odyssey wouldn't have benefitted from such a feature. So I have voted for 'I think that the best way to use costumes can be different depending on the intended design of the game.'
