Which Mario game would you live in and why?

Picture this:

You wake up this next morning to find yourself in a Mario game. You will remain in this game for the rest of your life. What game would you choose and why? Here are the "rules" and answers to potential questions:

• You will take the role as the main protagonist of whatever game you choose. If the game doesn't have a main protagonist (such as Super Smash Bros. or Nomiss) you will be a character of your choosing.
• If the game has a life system, you WILL die if you run out of lives.
• You can only choose a game from this list. Anything that isn't on the list won't count.

I'm not sure what my answer will be yet, but I will post it here once I have an idea.

I'm actually really curious to see what games people will seal their fates in.

• If the game has a life system, you WILL die if you run out of lives.
If the game has Continues (like New Soup Wii) do you die if you get one?
Furthermore, is the only way to die by running out of lives? In a game with no life system that results in death, do you live forever?

This is Super Mario we're talking about, and the premise grants all of Mario's abilities in the majority of cases. The concept of lives being a problem is largely trivial knowing that an infinite 1-up trick can be attempted in this ruleset. It's probably difficult to use one, having to adapt the technique to literal movement instead of inputs on a controller, but not impossible.

If we discount infinite lives, the best pick for risk adverse people who are still choosing a game with lives for some reason is Super Mario 3D Land. Repeatedly fighting Pom Pom will provide two opportunities per battle to accumulate extra lives by repeatedly stomping on her shell as she attempts to slam down against the person. This isn't completely consistent, and one will probably get hurt or lose a life a few times because of the inconsistency in how Pom Pom moves while in her shell, but its reliable enough to be positive for one's life counter and requires almost no precision to perform.

EDIT: Actually, correction. There is a clear pick to use. Super Mario role playing games conventionally have Recovery Blocks, AKA free instant healthcare accessible from every settlement and even out in the wilderness. With this in mind, the only real choice is a game with Recovery Blocks that do not require the player to pay to use them. Which means the list is: Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, Mario & Luigi: Brothership, Paper Mario, and Paper Mario: Sticker Star.

I pick Sticker Star because it is the only game on this list I've played, a definite boon when you do need to avoid things that would result in death. And you get fun amenities like being able to terraform by using Things, though I guess that also means putting up with the times Things cause problems. At least they are very novel problems.

This is the clause that's throwing me off because if it weren't for this, I would just hang out in one of the RPGs, probably TTYD. The other thing is that I really like the Koopalings and if I'm the protagonist, there's a good chance I would have to fight them and I don't want to do that either, especially since I'm not much of a good fighter.

So if I don't want to fight and I just want to hang out with my favorite characters all day (including the Koopalings) I think that leaves only one answer.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Final answer, Regis.

E: I know I would be sacrificing the RPG partners (and especially the Koopas) but I think it would be worth it for the Koopalings, King Boo, and not having to battle anyone.

If the game has continues, you can start over from when you woke up. If you're going to be in a game with no life system, you will live your regular lifespan.

Oh... the nostalgia...

I would probably choose Super Mario 3D Land if it weren't for Super Mario 3D World.

I always found it difficult to do the infinite 1-up trick on W1-2 in Super Mario 3D World, but I found an easier way to it while playing the game. I could not find this way on the internet at all so I made an edit on this page: https://www.mariowiki.com/Spiky_Spike_Bridge#Notes
It involves repeatedly stomping on a group of Parabones until the timer runs out. Wrangle as many Parabones as you can, and then stay in one place and hold "A". The ironic thing is that you're meant to defeat the group of Parabones with a Super Star which gets you only one 1-Up.

In this scenario am I allowed to leave the bounds of the play area and explore the world? Or am I stuck to areas that appear on screen? Also do I have human needs such as needing to eat and avoid staying in the sun for too long? Or do I only need to worry about things that a video character would? Lastly would non-player characters act like real people with their own lives? Or would they just do things like stand in one place forever and repeat their scripted line whenever I approach them?

The answers to those questions could vastly narrow my decisions.

This answer is probably cheating, but I would probably choose one of the Nintendo Classics options since it's on the list for the nintendo switch e-shop, assuming that means I have the ability to freely travel between multiple games.

1. You can explore the game world how you would like. You aren't limited to only the game's screens.

2. Your human needs are limited to what the game you're choosing has to offer.

3. NPCs do what they do best: being NPCs. So they just say their lines.

Also, for the Nintendo Classics game collections, I guess you can teleport through games as they would just be the same thing as their NES counterparts otherwise.

In that case, I would probably slowly sink into dangerously low morale over lack of real people to interact with no matter what I pick. Oh well, I think even with those dire circumstances I could still enjoy exploring some of my favorite video game worlds for a time.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder without a doubt!

Mario Party, specifically 6. I'll be Toadette.

Yes I'm a sucker for punishment, yes it will be painful, but it will always be entertaining, since nobody really dies here, especially if I'm a spectator and watching others suffer. Baby Luigi can be there too, for no reason. If Baby Luigi isn't allowed, I'll pick a game where he's in there, just not Partners in Time because I'd rather not spend my time as a purple mushroom thank you very much, and I don't want to be in Yoshi's Island either, fuck being a Yoshi.

I've been thinking about what you said here for a while and I've come to some interesting conclusions.

You said we aren't limited to only the game's screens which means we can explore content that wasn't in the original game. But you shouldn't be able to say: I pick Super Mario Bros so I cab explore a Minecraft world because Minecraft Wii U edition has Mario in it. You should need some more viable reasoning for what you want to explore in the game. This means we can make some connections and group several games together. Specifically, I think we can group mostly all the 3D Mario games together into one big world.

- Galaxy 1 and 2, and 3D World all have the Commit observatory.
- Odyssey and Sunshine have Isle Delfino
- Odyssey and Treasure Tracker have Power Moons.

So we've grouped:
Sunshine
Galaxy 1
Galaxy 2
3D World
Treasure Tracker
Odyssey

I couldn't find any connections with 3D Land, 64 and 64 DS outside of having Peaches Castle in the games which I don't think is a strong enough connection seeing as it's basically in every Mario game.

Let me know If you find anymore connections!

Technically 3d world is the sequel to 3d land, so in regards to timeline, those two are connected.
