MarioWiki Poll Discussion

Was going to make the official post of the poll, but been swamped. didn't realize activity was going to speed up so much so doing so now.

As this poll's creator, I have always been a bit mixed on the Yoshi games. On one hand, I enjoyed Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island even though how I played it (on my school computer) could have been more convenient. Interestingly due to my emulation methods, the Castle/Fortress theme sounds much spookier at the end really slowed down, like a very slow carnival. On the other, Yoshi Touch and Go has always been my least favorite Mario game by a long shot because of how it is only four very basic minigames. Even giving the defense of "it's just an early DS game showing its features" imagine if there was a Mario Party game released today called "Yoshi Party" with only four minigames for full price.

In terms of my vote however, Option 2, more for the second part of the sentence. "but would prefer some future Yoshi games to have standard environments." While I think the art settings are pretty cool from what I've seen of them despite not having played Yoshi's Woolly World or Yoshi's Crafted World, I would think it would be really cool if Yoshi games still had some games with them in the future, but also mix them up with non-art-themed settings that are still as creative.

Do you enjoy that recent Yoshi games are located in art-themed settings, such as yarn, hand-crafts, and book pages?
-Yes, I greatly enjoy the unique art-themed settings new Yoshi games have and want them to continue in future games.
-I consistently somewhat like the art-themed settings, but would prefer some future Yoshi games to have standard environments.
-I feel mixed on the art-themed settings but prefer Yoshi games have standard environments.
-I can enjoy these art-themed settings only when they affect the gameplay of the game.
-I can enjoy these art-themed settings only when they do not affect the gameplay of the game.
-I do not like the art-themed settings for Yoshi games at all.
-My opinion or combination of opinions is not listed here.
-I have no opinion on this subject.
-I haven't played any of the games, so no opinion.

New Mario Kart World-focused poll by @Dr. Lyra Orpheus! This one's for helping the Awards Committee gather data. I haven't played the game though…

Out of the new courses introduced in Mario Kart World, which is your favorite?

  • Mario Bros. Circuit
  • Crown City
  • Whistletop Summit
  • DK Spaceport
  • Starview Peak
  • Faraway Oasis
  • Peach Stadium
  • Salty Salty Speedway
  • Great ? Block Ruins
  • Cheep Cheep Falls
  • Dandelion Depths
  • Boo Cinema
  • Dry Bones Burnout
  • Bowser's Castle
  • Acorn Heights
  • Rainbow Road
  • I have not played Mario Kart World.

Super close between Rainbow Road and Boo Cinema for me. I ended up voting for Boo Cinema though, because a cinema is my favourite place to be.

Voted for Crown City, because I love city environments and I like the music a lot.

My favorite balanced overall is the Great ? Block Ruins, but I'll also shout out Boo Cinema for having a great aesthetic even though the layout itself is rather simple.

I voted for Crown City. I love the music, and I like how it switches things up instead of being just a loop (Which is one of the reasons why Mount Wario is my favorite MK8D course) Although, I don't know what rainbow road is like because I haven't played all the trophies yet to unlock it, so, I might change my opinion if I do get the chance to play it.

Sorry for being late with this. There's a new poll on the wiki for those who didn't know! It's another one for the Awards Committee to gather data, and it was made by @Diamant!

Which Koopalings boss battle in Super Mario Bros. Wonder - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park is your favorite?

  • Wendy
  • Lemmy
  • Larry
  • Roy
  • Iggy
  • Morton
  • Ludwig
  • I didn't like any of the boss battles.
  • I have not played this game.

I voted for Morton. He's so big and towering and that makes for an epic battle!

This new poll was created by yours truly!
Mario's companions have always been one of my favourite parts of this series, after all they are (usually) the ones responsible for making the games unique by introducing fun mechanics and such. For those wondering, we decided to exclude swappable partners as we didn't want those dominating the votes as it's well known that characters such as Geno or Vivian already dominate favourite character polls.

Considering my profile was F.L.U.D.D. only two days ago you may think that is who I'm voting for, but actually my vote goes for Cappy who is my favourite non-Koopa character in the whole series!

Mario has had many one-time companions during his many adventures. Besides swappable partners (Goombario, Vivian, etc.) who is your favorite?
  • F.L.U.D.D.
  • Stuffwell
  • Tippi
  • Baby Luma
  • Kersti
  • Prince Dreambert
  • Huey
  • Cappy
  • Olivia
  • Bowser Jr.
  • Prince Florian
  • Snoutlet
  • My favorite is not listed here.
  • I have no opinion

I originally said F.L.U.D.D, but then I saw Cappy on the list, I just think Cappy is so unique.

It's a toss up. Cappy has a ton of dialogue, so he genuinely feels like a travel partner. There's lots of less common lines to trigger too, so he feels more spontaneous than a large number of the entrants. Odyssey's customization also works heavily in his favor, letting the player pick their favorite appearance. Prince Dreambert gets lots of fun "fish out of water" moments. Kersti has her unforgettable fiery introduction.

I'm giving this to Bowser Jr. though. (I'm assuming he's listed here for the Bowser's Fury role and not like, Origami King. It might pay to list the source game if this poll is repeated.) He's the first time Nintendo succeeded at making the companion character an equal partner in the adventure rather than just being "a tool with a mouth". Between free-ish movement, the ability to have him act independently from Mario even in single player, and having useful interactions that aren't enforced by game progression, he just ends up being more "natural" than the others. In addition, Junior's role in Bowser's Fury meaningfully builds on his existing character.

I voted Huey because I just think he is a hilarious but also chill guy he isn't as condescending as Kersti and isn't as Happy-go-lucky as Olivia. He is in-between the both of them in terms of personality (that and I also have a bias towards Colour Splash, Yes I like a game in the modern Paper Mario trilogy whoa shocker!)

Hello everyone, this is my first poll for the wiki, (hooray!) go ahead and vote on it if you haven't yet, and then you can come and discuss it here.

What are your feelings towards locations from the real world appearing or being referenced in the Mario Series? (Brooklyn, Mario Kart Tour tracks, etc.)

  • I really enjoy real world locations in the Mario series, and think they should be included more often.
  • I like the occasional appearance of real world locations, but I think that it should remain about as frequent as it is now.
  • I think that references to the real world should exist, but only limited to small easter eggs.
  • I prefer real world inspired locations over real world locations themselves (Such as New Donk City).
  • I would prefer that the Mario series takes inspiration more from real world history over the present day.
  • I prefer for the Mario universe to be presented as a fantasy world with as little connection as possible to reality.
  • I am neutral about this topic, it doesn't affect my enjoyment whether real world locations appear or not.

i like the Brooklyn stuff (ie Mario and Luigi are from real-world Brooklyn and find a pipe that teleports them to the Mushroom Kingdom's dimension), but i'm not fond of real world settings just showing up for the sake of it, especially when it's not even explicitly framed as being in another dimension from the Mushroom Kingdom. If it's in the Mushroom Kingdom's dimension, I'd prefer if it was inspired but Mario themed.

They made Mario explicitly Italian, and have chosen to not retcon that into oblivion. If anything, the 2023 Illumination film doubles down on the idea in a way most Mario media doesn't. I think we're well past the point of making Super Mario take place entirely within fantasy setting. So we're doing it. I'm voting "remain about as frequent", because yeah, people are really here for the hills having eyes, the power-ups, the wacky wildlife, and so on. But I don't mind returning to NYC, or having a story's bit being exploring the real world.

I do take issue with New Donk City making things more confusing instead of less. (Hey, where does the game Donkey Kong take place?) I have no beef with fantasy expies of real world locations, but please don't conflate the expies with the originals.

Hello Yello! Its your girl Super back with a poll! But now without any chair to define my person! Today's poll is on all those fun RPG maguffins that define the whole journey!
Of the main relics that have appeared in the Mario RPGs, which are your favourite?
-Star Pieces (Super Mario RPG)
-Star Spirits (Paper Mario)
-Crystal Stars (Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door)
-Pure Hearts (Super Paper Mario)
-Royal Stickers (Paper Mario: Sticker Star)
-Big Paint Stars (Paper Mario: Color Splash)
-Streamer Spools (Paper Mario: The Origami King)
-Cobalt Star Shards (Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time)
-Great Lighthouses (Mario & Luigi: Brothership)
-Purified Darkmess Energy Crystals (Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope)
-I have no opinion.
I personally love the Great Lighthouses the best for their dungeon and collectible combo. What say your thoughts on the matter?

Hello, this is The Shadow Prince, and I am the person with creator credit over this week's poll about voters' opinions on The Super Mario Galaxy Movie! When writing this poll, I decided to implement a six point scale instead of a five-point scale, so as to give a wider range of options with three positive and three not positive options, and so people who did not feel strongly either way had two choices about whether they at least considered it fine or only considered it so-so. I felt a slightly larger scale of options would work better considering how big of an event this movie is too

I also think it is interesting that this movie's reception has been fairly negative. While that may be worse than if everyone loved this movie, in a way it could be more interesting for the poll results. As if the movie was very widely liked, it would be very predictable that almost everyone would vote for Option 1 or Options 1 and 2. Here it will be interesting to see if at least a decent majority of the vote is still for the three positive options because by default, they enjoy the movie's Mario content and hijinks, or if more people vote for Options 4-6 to the point of it being closer to the critical reception of the movie.

I also think it interests me that when the first 2023 Mario Movie came out, critics gave it a weak score saying that it focused on action but was too light on story and a lot of fans complained that they were overreacting, and said "it's a Mario movie, do you really expect a deep Oscar-worthy story?". (However, personally I agreed with the critics on Mario Movie 1 because I felt that while the movie didn't need to be deep, sometimes it needed to be more adequate about executing and concluding certain plot points that it sets up and then mostly drops, like that it sets up an arc for Luigi but then he has almost no role in the majority of the movie. I still felt like the movie was at least entertaining enough to be fine though) But for the Mario Galaxy Movie, critics didn't like it for the same reason of having a weak and not fleshed out story, but in contrast this time most people in the fandom seem to agree completely with the critics that that's a big problem.

What was your opinion on The Super Mario Galaxy Movie?
-I thought that this movie was great, and handled exactly the right way.
-I thought that this movie was pretty good, and felt somewhat satisfied watching it.
-I thought that this movie was decent, but was only just enough to be positive.
-I thought that this movie was so-so, but had some flaws.
-I thought that this movie was poor, and not worth watching.
-I thought that this movie was awful, and almost completely lacking in positive elements.
-I have no opinion on this subject.
-I have not seen The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

My answer was Option 8; I am already very strict about budgeting my money right now (the only luxury I really spend much money on at all is restaurant food such as when I hang out with my friends) and so was not planning to spend extra money to see any movie in theaters. Seeing this movie's reception did nothing to change my decision too. I will likely see the movie it is offered for free somewhere as part of some streaming service, and may rent it if it was offered for a low price.

Hello everyone, There's a new poll up by me, as usual head on over to the front page of the wiki to vote if you haven't already and then come back to discuss it here.

Do you think that it is important that portrayals of the Mario Universe keep to a certain level of consistency? Which option best matches your opinion?
-It's important for the Mario franchise to maintain a high level of consistency, and discrepancies between entries should be avoided.
-Major details should remain consistent between entries in the Mario franchise, but minor details can be changed.
-Forcing the Mario series to be consistent is too limiting on the potential to add creative ideas to the franchise.
-Mario games should be consistent with one another, but adaptations like movies and TV series should be more free to make changes.
-Mario platformers should be consistent with one another, but spinoff series should be more free to make changes.
-The Mario franchise should keep established story details consistent, but character designs and art direction can differ from game to game.
-The Mario franchise should keep a consistent art direction and character designs, but story details can be contradicted.
-I am neutral or have no opinion on the topic of consistency in the Mario series.

I'll repost a short blurb I added as a note in the original nomination for the poll, because it seems relevant to the discussion here.

I have seen plenty of debate about whether the Mario series should have an established and consistent canon and/or timeline like certain other franchises. I personally disagree with this idea, but I still find the discussion to be interesting. There also seem to be different periods of time where consistency in things like art style and character design seem to be more strictly defined than others. There were also points where the pursuit of consistency lead to the rule that individuals of species like toads in the Paper Mario franchise could no longer appear with differing features. I think there is a balance to be struck where the broad strokes of the universe have some amount of consistency but small details can be changed to suit the character of each game.

Overall I think that consistency can be an admirable goal for some kinds of stories, but can hold back the potential for creative exploration of ideas in other cases. I'm looking forward to read what people have to say about this topic.

I accidentally made a goof when posting this poll on the wiki. There's also a "I have a specific opinion on this subject not covered by the other options." option too. Oops!

A question aimed directly at the lorehheads. Hmm.

I feel that my answer to this question is inherently influenced by how much I dislike how Angry Birds handles this. Angry Birds used to be very similar to Mario's laissez-faire treatment of this, but at this point its a full on multiverse where everything sufficiently different from a core branch is its own world. (That includes art style!) Multiverses are complicated! They make fun alternative takes on things less fun, because of the pressure they create on "placing" the alternative take within the framework. I don't want that for Mario. I think the best answer is "The Mario franchise should keep established story details consistent, but character designs and art direction can differ from game to game." Not everything can fit together, nor should it, but broad strokes wise an attempt should be made to keep character personalities, character positions, and the status quo consistent. To the untrained eye, it should look like everything works, even if the hardcore audience is flinging "well, actually"-s left and right. (Lets face it, the hardcore audience would spot irregularities even if there was an active effort for 100% consistency.)

This approach has its drawbacks, namely that no individual story gets to change the status quo. Kamek can't get a meaningful promotion, Bowser can never get a victory that isn't undone before the given story concludes, and there have to be people watching key backstories like hawks. But the Mario franchise heavily favors creating new locations, characters, and scenarios over elaborating on old ones. I don't think this level of standardization blocks off conventional Mario storytelling.

On art style and character design consistency: I think its useful to be able to bend the style to match the story, and I think there are many memorable stories that get key elements from their unique art. (Something something Paper Mario, something something Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, and I'm specifically picking these because of the lack of lore explanation.) I'm also reminded of a Time Magazine article regarding the film Pokémon: Detective Pikachu. Erik Nordby. the film's visual effects supervisor, said that the film had to diverge from Pokémon standard and give Pikachu a furry texture. In response to initial fan blowback, he said, "How can it not be furry? It would be this hard-surfaced yellow thing—the most disturbing thing in the world." In this case, sticking to the stock style would diminish the project. The level of detail provided by live action for humans and the environment would make a less detailed off-the-shelf Pikachu appear out of place. And sure, some would answer "then the project shouldn't exist as a entry of Pokémon" but I think the world would be worse off if a desire for a one true Pokémon asthetic prevented Pokémon: Detective Pikachu from existing. (Cartoon Brew has an interview with Erik Nordby too, if it helps.)

I think major stuff should be kept the same, because it'd be very confusing saying that Mario 64 and onwards is Now Mario and before was Mario's dad for example. But no one really cares about the minor stuff, so.

at this point its a full on multiverse where everything sufficiently different from a core branch is its own world
I am also not a fan of using a multiverse to justify differences between different works, and prefer to simply let works in a franchise that don't follow each other be left alone as different interpretations of a world and characters and not some kind of world of clones that you can run through a portal to visit. I feel like in multiverse stories it usually wastes the potential of the idea because there is often one main universe that is invested in and the others are just thrown away when they're inconvenient.

That being said, there are a few multiverse stories that I have really enjoyed, such as the Spider-Man Spider-Verse movies, which uses the concept to bring in multiple art-styles and characters in a unique way, so even though it's not my preference, I think multiverse stories can still be done well, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't feel really overdone these days.

i'm in a weird place on this where i'd like source material to be able to be called back to no matter where in the series it originated. i hate that all of the RPGs' settings and characters are kept mostly contained to them, i want that stuff to be on the table to be used in other mario games. but i also do not think that there necessarily needs to be one strict continuity that applies to every subseries and is absolutely binding, for example if a character is killed/destroyed in their source game they shouldn't be off limits to be playable in Mario Kart. but i like the sense of continuity the rpg subseries had between their various entries in the early days (which was heavily weakened when modern paper mario arrived to completely turn the series' priorities upside down). i'd like it if that could be maintained better in the future, even if it does mean walking back on some of the decisions made in newer entries. i just think demanding consistency all the way down to "but how can fawful be in mario kart if he is dead" is silly.

that said i don't know where this would fall in the options, whether a dead character being allowed to be playable in a spinoff would count as "major" or not. i wouldn't say so. bringing them back with no explanation within the rpgs would feel contrived (with the exception of entries that explicitly set out to be noncanon & fanservice oriented to begin with, like paper jam should have imo) but in mario kart/party/whatever who cares.
