I Don’t Think There is gonna be a Mario and Sonic 2018 game

MarioKartGamerDude

Biggest Mario fan ever!
The Winter Olympics are not that far away and no announcements have been made about one yet!

Though I did hear a while back they got the rights to do the 2020 games so maybe we’ll get that one instead later on.

If they were to make a new Mario & Sonic game, that series needs a pretty severe shake-up in order for it to get my attention. Stop keeping the character roster stagnant, please for the love of all things sporty don't remove the Dream Events (maybe have this installment actually focus on them, they were always the best part of the Olympics), and...well I haven't played too much of the series so I couldn't go too much in-depth about the problems it has but those that I listed are a start. I thought some of the improvements in Rio were good enough to keep like the hub world, now expand on it and don't remove some of the good parts of the series.

If it doesn't want to improve, then the series deserves a rest, at least, temporarily.

And no one else will really notice.

Though the only thing I want from those games are the model and music rips.

this series made more sense 10 years ago when it was a novely to have mario and sonic in the same game, and party games were the wii's bread and butter.

at this point, after 5 entries that are all basically the same and the entry of the switch, axing it would be for the best.

That a little bit of a bummer, but I'm okay with the series taking a little hiatus until 2020 or beyond.

Hopefully the next one will have a Adventure Tours mode like 2010 Winter Olymics DS had.

There’s defintely going to be a 2020 one. Ubisoft took the license from SEGA for the Winter Olympics, but SEGA secured the 2020 license. Mario was also used to promote Tokyo 2020.

Also, I think you guys are just salty that Rio 2016 ended up being a better game than a lot of recent Mario Sports titles!

Not salty since thats not saying a whole lot.

No, I'm not salty. And also, why the fuck would I be salty for suggesting improvements to the franchise? There are some stuff that I really like and that I don't want this franchise to end on a mediocre note.

Also, Mario Sports Superstars is a better game than Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic games. End of story. You can say whatever you want about Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash though.

Wait, Ubisoft took the license? Hmm, that explains it but at least we have 2020

Same way I feel how a bag of stale potato chip tastes better than a glass of flat beer.

If Ubisoft did took the license, then they should take advantage of that and spend time and effort making the 2020 game.

But knowing how this series is, that's probably not going to be the case.

I'm sorry but what planet are you from? The roster has only been getting bigger and better over the years. And the Dream Events have been getting better treatment too.

So that's why. You shouldn't complain about a series not improving if you've barely played it. As far as I'm conscerned your opinion is not worth anything unless you have actually done the research.

Except the "new" characters generally are severely restricted to the point where it's a stretch to call it a "bigger" roster (they're even called "guests" in Rio Wii U and are playable only in the one or two events they are assigned to). This isn't "bigger and better", not exactly. Also, you can argue that the roster has gotten worse, at least in the handheld, where in Rio 3DS, only Mario, Sonic, and Miis are usable in all events. Everyone else is restricted to one or two events. This is a downgrade even from the execrable London 3DS where characters are lumped into arbitrary groups and those groups are restricted to one or two events. Mario & Sonic is about using your favorite character, not being forced to use someone you don't like.

On another note, It's already bad that your opponents for every event are randomized and that hasn't changed AT ALL through the series. Even their only change is that they let you pick whoever as your opponents for the game, I'd highly appreciate it and will actually boost my play time for a bit. I love the Dream Events, but they'd be so much better if I can kick the shit out of Wario, Donkey Kong, Waluigi or if I'm in a "let's kill Sonic" mood, Sonic, Amy, Shadow. But no, I have to face characters I like such as Luigi or don't care for such as Peach and most Sonic characters unless I want to waste time with the RNG. They also ditched Dream Events in Rio Wii U while dumbing them down in 3DS (called Plus versions, which are just regular versions but with some caveats, a far cry from the previous Dream Events). Dream Events are hella fun and I love them and the Mario & Sonic games should build around Dream Events while the regular modes should be a side mode, not the other way around.

I hardly call it "better treatment". It's more like they took steps forward and then they walked off a cliff.

Are you seriously counting the "lol exclusive guest character tied to only one event" to contribute to a bigger and better roster? Like, seriously?

From what I've checked, no, the roster has been stagnant since the second installment. When they actually did introduce new playable characters (which took them until Rio, so there goes London and Sochi), you could use them in *only* one event, so it's like a corrupt a wish type thing too. That's not a bigger and better roster, it's mostly the same damn pool of characters and oh you could play as Wave in BMX racing if you wanted to I guess.

Also, congrats for ignoring the handheld installments. Ever since London, they've been locking even the typical characters in either utterly ridiculous categories (Mario has to be part of "The Heroes" and Vector as "The Wild Ones") that could be played in only really specific events and in Rio 3DS, they went even further down the shit path by locking EVERY character not named Mario or Sonic to one or two events only. That is not an improvement, that's going backwards.

Not even Mario Party is this stagnant. At the very least, they usually introduce new characters each new installment, few exceptions of course, and surprise surprise, those characters could be used in all minigames and modes.

Which the latest installment Rio threw all away. I don't know how this is considered "better" treatment.

I guess not, because the marginal improvements must be detected with like a magnifying glass or something.

You know why I stopped giving the games a chance and stopped caring about them, despite being an avid Mario Sports and Mario Party fan? Because they gave me a mediocre impression. Mario & Sonic at the Winder Games for 3DS was entertaining for its Dream Events and I had some fun with it. The same is said about London's Dream Events, which were the only things I cared about in the game, because the rest of the events were painfully mediocre. But the 3DS game, London, was extremely abysmal from what my twin played, and when I read that Rio 3DS is making their character roster restriction even worse and Rio for Wii U scrapping the only thing I liked about the Olympic Games away, why should I even bother playing something I know I wouldn't like as much? Why should I play this series when I've got Mario Party, which is a better minigame collection than this series, aside from the Dream Events which were better than minigames, but less of them and gone by Rio (Mario Party also offers a lot more freedom with opponents selecting too, and that's a huge plus)?

You're not going to sway my overall dull opinion on the series, so what's the point of trying to argue this with me?

If I remember correctly, the skydiving and footrace dream events were my favorite events in the original game on the Wii. It's almost making me wanna play them again!

Re: I Don't Think There is gonna be a Mario and Sonic 2018 game

in order to prevent WW3 with a peaceful contest resolution. President Donald Trump has assigned, in a true example of American acceptance via allowing a humanoid animal, Sonic the hedgehog, to represent America. however such beings are still not allowed in the military, due to the fact that it'll cost too much money. to meet the challenge, supreme leader Kim Jon Un (sp? idk im not a koreaboo) has chosen chosen famed communist leader Mario Mario to lead the korean reds and ensure that capitalist pigs know which economic system is truely superior. Will communism prevail? Will Trump just say fuck it and nuke them anyways? or shall the world see this madness and realize socialism's the one true way? play Mario and Sonic at the North Korean Olympic Games to find out!

Really interesting that Ubisoft got the Olympic license, 'cause the Steep game they have didn't cross my mind on how they apply this license. I'm curious about how you know SEGA's got the Olympic license for Tokyo 2020, since this is the first time I am hearing about this.

Thank you for reading.

Source on Sega picking up the license for Tokyo 2020

But yeah no South Korea game since Ubisoft already got the license for it. Though the last Winter olympics game (Sochi) was kinda half-assed even for Mario and Sonic standards. They even didn't bother making a 3DS version for that one.

I am kinda excited for the Tokyo 2020 game though. I've said this many times already I think. But since this is Sega and Nintendo's home country it sounds likely they'll probably put the best effort into it. Or at least comparable to what they did for Vancouver 2010 and London 2012. (Which are still the best versions for each season of the Olympic Games)

Maybe skipping out on the South Korea games could even allow Sega and Nintendo to spice up the 2020 games with more developmental time. Who knows.

I wonder why Ubisoft took the Winter License anyway but at least we know SEGA has the 2020 Olympics!

I just hope it’s good

Well, I would say it had much more heart put into it than Mario Sports Superstars.

Well, I'm shell-shocked :koopa:! So they won't have a 2018 game, they will have a 2020 game, and then they'll stop there? Well, it wasn't the best series anyway. I mean, each event was simply a minigame rather than a full-scale sport. If they actually went into depth into those sports, especially the dream events, I'd actually miss the series. But they need to do that in 2020, as well as adding a Perspective Mode (like in MP9). They need to end the series with a bang.

i dont like sonic so i dont care

i know. i, king boo appeared in one. but just to show my moves.

We don't know if they won't be making more after 2020. The next one after that one is Beijing in 2022 but for Winter rather then Summer like it was in 2008. Which that one was the one for the very first Mario and Sonic game.

I firmly disagree.

Also, today, I really wish they hadn't half-assed Sochi. The location is very very interesting.
