Collab: Articles for All of the Levels

Time Turner

You are filled with determination. (R/GD/TT)
As our MarioWiki:New Articles Policy states, every level and every mission should have an individual, distinct article. That was written in 2012, so I'd say we're a bit behind. This isn't going to involve creating an article for literally every Star and Shine Sprite that can be collected, so 100-Coin missions, unnamed stars, and maybe one-level stars, but otherwise, it's fair game. To get us started, I'll be listing every mission by level, which will certainly be a process. We will have two lists: one is a massive table comprising every mission in Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Mario Galaxy 2, while the other is a simple list of all games who need to have their levels split.

For missions that exist in both Super Mario 64 and in Super Mario 64 DS, I feel like only images from Super Mario 64 should be used since they are usually of higher quality. If there's any difference that has to be visualised, then images from Super Mario 64 DS can be used. What does everyone think about this?

I'd agree with that, but perhaps there could be the maps from DS in there

Generally, we try to use the newest incarnation, but I don't see why we need to choose one over the other. One image can go in the infobox, the other can go in the body.

Are we going to add an infobox to the new pages? No please, the page is already going to be nothing but few paragraphs and a foreign names table. Not sure how this should happen, but more than one picture on those articles (especially SM64) is going to be an overkill.

Also, can't we have a proposal for this on the wiki. I know it's already in the policy, but I guess we should run this to the MarioWiki users just to collect fresh opinions. It's a huge move, might be a risky one too.

I don't see the problem with having an infobox. They're kinda the standard for a lot of articles, includes ones who have a lot less information like minigames, microgames, RPG items, race karts, and so on. The missions (levels? episodes? what's the proper nomenclature?) will have more than enough information to make the infobox not look lopsided.

I mean, if enough people over here are in opposition to it, it could be done, but it was made by Steve and supported by the other mods. If nobody's complaining after the discussion that's started here, making a proposal seems like more trouble than it's worth.

So.... does this mean we unfeature Honey Hive Galaxy, Clockwork Ruins Galaxy, and Rolling Coaster Galaxy? And what about Mt. Teapot, Rice Beach, and Mystic Forest? Shouldn't they get split, too? So that means we need nuclear wiki fission on Super Mario Land 3 and Mario vs. Donkey Kong related articles as far as I know.

I'd use Super Mario 64 DS whenever possible.

Also, we should totally create separate 64 DS versions of the article and put "In Super Mario 64 DS, the star is the same as if it was gotten in the original version of the game that can be gotten in the original way." as its content. :smug:

Maybe it'd be best if we sit down to map out just how much is going to be split or otherwise changed before we start splitting or otherwise changing stuff.

Probably in the level articles, we can describe important landmarks or features, especially in the galaxy articles. But if we're going to be removing information from those articles I mentioned, you might as well unfeature them since they'll be too short to remain featured.

Infoboxes will look better than no infoboxes and make it more natural to have two images. Besides, they can just be simpler versions of {{levelbox (Template:Levelbox)}} - the name of the mission/episode, an image, the game title, the area, and a bottom section for the links to the preceding/following missions/episodes and a link to an overall list page, or the hub area, or whatever. Still plenty of stuff for the body paragraphs, and with a much more put-together look overall - infoboxes are good.

Besides, half the whole damn wiki is already articles that are a couple paragraphs long with a picture or two and a foreignname template - these new pages will fit right in, and actually be a lot better than the current clutter on the SMG galacy pages and whatnot. Plus it's consistent with the sidescrollers and will be better for navigation (section-linking is a pain) and funnelling in search traffic, which is why Steve made the policy in the first place - unless he reverses his decision himself, it's non-negotiable, so there's no point in making a proposal regardless of how many people complain.

Dr. Mario said:

Yep, although I feel like it'd be better to focus on the SM64/SMS/SMG splits for now: once those are brought up to speed, then we can focus on getting round to whatever sidescrollers haven't been split yet, rather than dropping bombs haphazardly on everything all at the same time, or getting caught up in table-making (never a fun time with the forum's interface) or whatever.

Princess Mario

✨Mushroom Kingdom's fabulously glittery plumber✨
I do agree that we should focus our effort to split on those pages first, but you might have editors who are more interested in those subject matter, so maybe they can work on those while this thread's center are those articles. Anyway, I'm just making a heads-up, because I thought it's only 3D Mario platformer articles that need the split, but no, we have two other entire games, which means there may be more games that aren't in the radar yet.

Princess Mario

✨Mushroom Kingdom's fabulously glittery plumber✨
So, since we have three entire games that need to have wiki fission, we should probably list games in the opening paragraph of this thread, but let's not go beyond that.

Time Turner

You are filled with determination. (R/GD/TT)
The first article, Big Bob-omb on the Summit, is live! Also, our list of games that require fission or level expansion has reached fourteen twenty-one (cheated a bit by adding games who've been neglected and would normally have articles for their levels at this point, but it fits well enough).

I ... am not entirely sure how we're going to cover all alternative paths in each Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS missions. There are so many ways one can go about doing these missions, all range from low-level play to very high-level play. Should that even be done? The Wiki does not cover unofficial knowledge — does this include paths one may take to finish missions like these?

Princess Mario

✨Mushroom Kingdom's fabulously glittery plumber✨
Instead of describing each and every path, it would be better to just focus on the general layout and the goal point. Potential paths should be already covered in the respective level article rather than being lumped into the level article. If the path to the goal is straightforward, though, then feel free to describe it.

We also need to put in a navigation template for these levels.

Duly noted. I have tomorrow off so I'll see if I can't get around to making at least one of these. I don't know enough about the differences in missions in DS, though, so I'll start with something else: Super Mario Galaxy. More specifically, the Good Egg Galaxy missions.

I feel like we should describe where coins can be found in Super Mario 64/DS and Super Mario Sunshine levels since they unlock 100 coin Stars/Shine Sprites, respectively. Comments on this?

Princess Mario

✨Mushroom Kingdom's fabulously glittery plumber✨
I don't think that's a good idea since coins are found through various means (defeating enemies, blue coin blocks, red coins, and blocks to name a few). I mean, yeah, we can talk about some coin formations and all, but it's best if we just confine constant coin locations (like blue coin blocks) to the level articles themselves.

I just worked on The Floating Fortress from Buoy Base Galaxy since I decided to take another approach to this thing rather than start on the first level of the first game or whatnot, so don't mind me.

One of us should really work on the navtemplates too, but for Galaxy's case, I think I'm going to put level names in the Galaxies navbox instead.

Yeah, describing the paths through the landscape would be too much like a walkthrough (unless the path is linear by default like in 2D platformers, then it's kind of a given that the route and procedure will be described - as long as it's not too detailed and instruction-like, of course).

SMS world pages already have the Blue Coin locations (example (Sirena_Beach#Blue_Coin_Locations)), and those could be added to the applicable levels as well, I guess?

Dr. Mario said:

I feel like for the galaxies, it'd probably work to put the mission names as bulleted entries below the bolded galaxy names, and switch the template to be left-justified with only the galaxy names and headers manually centered. To see a quick example (since I don't have time to make a bigger mock-up right now), just replace the Good Egg Galaxy part of Template:Galaxy with:

Code:
|style="background:#ccccff;text-align:left"|<center>'''[[Good Egg Galaxy]]'''</center>
*{{fakelink|Dino Pianha}}
*{{fakelink|A Snack of Cosmic Proportions}}
*{{fakelink|King Kaliente's Battle Fleet}}
For more linear games (and potentially SMS since it only has a few areas), regular level nav templates along the lines of Template:SMW Levels would probably be fine, and games with only a few levels or easily compacted level lists (i.e. numeric) could possibly be kept within the overall game nav template (i.e. Template:WL3 has all the levels, Template:SML could handle the levels, and Template:SMB1 Levels could conceivably fit into Template:SMB too, but that's only because the games overall have few pages to link, so more often than not, separate templates will probably be needed).

Before I start going crazy on Good Egg Galaxy, should I write 'Mario or Luigi' or 'the player'?

On the topic of navtemplates, I feel like making {{SM64 Missions}} that lists all missions wouldn't be too bad (just look at Template:SM3DL Levels), and I'll get on creating that tomorrow.

I've pruned Cosmic Cove Galaxy of its missions and rewrote and formatted a table, similar to how Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon handled it (ex Gloomy Manor), What do you think?

Pi: write "players", it's cleaner that way. Also, yes you should, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon also does this as well

BLOF: Very good, but one question remains: what do we do with the Green Star missions of Super Mario Galaxy 2? Do we make separate pages for those too, or are we still relegating those to the articles about the levels themselves?

Also, thanks.

Redshift

Enjoying dinners at 9:00 PM
That's one of the reason I left it there. Considering it's like a comet mission that's relegated to a specific mission rather than something entirely new, I feel we should list Green Stars in their respective level articles they appear in (ie Green Star 1 is in Twin Falls Hideaway).

What do we do with other comet missions (Speed Run, Daredevil, Fast Foes, Cosmic Race, Purple Coins, Double Speed, Cosmic Clones)? Do we just include those in the regular level articles they're based on? What if there is no mission they're based on, or at least none that's very easy to easily decide: yes, this is what the mission is based on?
