The rejected Tostarena design was apparently too on-the-nose.
 
The stock image mustache and poncho being lazily superimposed onto Mario is hilarious.
 
One has to wonder how many variations of "Diary of a Wimpy Mario" has existed currently, and if they even contain the same content. I suspect the use of Minecraft Mario is used to attract people since it might not draw attention otherwise.

If I recall correctly, Bowser looks on model in some shots. Then again, it's been ages since I saw clips from that movie.
Either way, we all know what perfect anime Bowser looks like:
