Yeah, it was made for casual play in mind, but Melee still appealed to the hardcore fighting game community. Sakurai saw this and said "no, screw competitive play". Melee proved both sides could coexist. There was no reason to remove those elements.
Think of it like this. I go to a restaurant and I order a bacon cheeseburger. I get my bacon cheeseburgers and bite into. First, i notice there is no bacon or cheese in the burger whatsoever. Okay, that's kinda bullshit. Then I realize they've put some disgusting new sauce in there that makes it taste awful. I suppose I should just accept and adapt, right?
And believe it or not, a lot of Melee fans want more than just Melee. But if Sakurai continues this attitude of "competitive play is bad and everyone should be a winner", then people don't have a choice.
Again, I love both games and play them both. At least from a spectator's perspective, a match of melee is infinitely more entertaining than a match of Brawl.
I find it ironic you say Melee felt unpolished. Sakurai has stated before that it was the "sharpest game in the series".

Well that's grossly oversimplifying the whole thing.DaKid said:Melee is a good game, but competitively, it really not fun. All that spasmic dashing to the left and right, wavedashing and crap gets tiring fast.
