SMG4 is super wellknown as an original? comedy show on Youtube.
To people who actually never ever touch this series: SMG4 began as a series where SMG4, the main OC protagonist (along with SMG3 and some other secondary regulars) befriend with Mario and idle around Mushroom Kingdom and do silly stuff, so in short, it is simply a typical Mario fanfic.
But in recent years, the expansion of new main cast are mostly OCs instead of other Mario world characters or videogame icons and the focus on Super Mario characters is gone. The establishment of SMG4 Castle is often considered as the watershed of the series since it was the direct way to focus on SMG4 cast while characters around Mushroom Kingdom are rarely seen again.
Still SMG4 also proves their talent in making original stories and characters, as they've made many fantastic story arcs about each character, and feels like they can actually stand on their own new series and might even inspire their own videogame if the team want to.

"But fan fic creator can do anything about his/her own creation, what's the problem?", well this is sure an answer for all kinds of fanfic cases.
I think SMG4's problem is setting itself in a weird position: it's now not quite a Super Mario fanfic, but it is still based on the Mario world. If becoming an original series means to avoid license issues, staying in Mario world pretty much just falls at the last hurdle. Some fans have said why SMG4 not consider a direct reboot where the story doesn't take place in videogame world, but it feels like it's hard for the team to give up the whole progress they've made so far, which is actually understandable to me.
Honestly I don't think making more OC stories in Mario world is a bad thing, some other fanfics do that too. But many signs show that the show want to get away from Super Mario characters or most settings from Mario or the videogame world in general, despite they exist here, it's kinda coming to a point that it's both deliberate and unnecessary. Mostly whenever the modern SMG4 cast enter a different game theme, the vg character are often just removed, while the story is about how SMG4 experience that game theme. However, vg characters still play abit part for the purpose of that game so removing them would cause many weird contradiction. It also further gives fans the expression "SMG4 team don't seem to respect vg characters enough."
One of the series chapter "Waluigi for Smash" arc is sort a classic problem. It sure tries to highlight the internet meme about Walugi for Smash, but the whole show feels strange when SMG4 cast try to stop him but they're none of the business of Super Smash bros, and the actual Smash fighters don't even get to participate in this story arc, which confuses Smash bros fans in such way "okay if Waluigi is so upset why he doesn't just attack the official fighters?" (actually there is a Waluigi Smash rap battle fan video for this idea.)
I also think SMG4 missed the chance to show their talent to give canon Mario or more vg characters meme power like they did with the said Waluigi, Francis (who SMG4 team obviously love) or other vg characters from early time. Early fans have been waiting for a Toad arc or Daisy arc, but obviously they're not planning that today. I'm also very surprised to have not seen Warioware in SMG4 story despite WW cast literally looks like SMG4's preference. Overall, I think it's actually a dissapointment to fans of SMG4 cast because they were also not given a proper chance to interact with Mario and vg characters.
What' your take on this series? Do you think they need to make some adjustment in the current format? Or you think they should do a total reboot and get away from the early stories?
