Is completing the original New Super Mario Bros. even worth it in the year of our Lord 2021?

Let's talk about the original NSMB!
I completed the game a few days ago: collected every single Star Coin and unlocked the three stars on my save file (feelsgoodman.jpg). I've got to say, I had a blast just going through each world beating the levels, but I definitely suffered when I had to backtrack to get the remaining Star Coins I hadn't collected yet. Having to get a Mini-Mushroom for this level, or a Blue Shell for that one and having to use them at very specific moments made my playthrough of the game feel a bit like a chore at the end, if I'm totally honest. Not to mention, some of the levels had tricky spots so I had to replay them a few times before I could get that remaining third Star Coin.
All in all, I'm happy I could finally complete this game that I had been playing on and off for more than a decade. I really, really like the art-style (save for when you turn into a giant, which doesn't look quite good imho) and I can appreciate the evolution of the series a lot more now that I sank some hours into the original one!

That being said, the Star Coins fetch really did wear me out so I'll wait a few weeks before I go on my quest to complete NSMB Wii. :buzzy:

What about you?

The Mini Mushroom is my least favorite power-up for the reasons listed above. I absolutely hated it in this game. I also don't recall the Blue Shell ever being mandatory to collect a Star Coin.

The topic title has pretty awkward phrasing though. I mean, uh, you can play whatever game you want, you get to decide if completing it is worth it. I like the original New Super Mario Bros. and I'd be happy to 100% it again if given an opportunity.

I do remember at least one level, World 4, where you need a Blue Shell to get to a Star Coin. You can't even go and throw a Koopa Shell at the blocks because there's no way to wall jump while holding a shell. Not that I know of, at least. 🤔

I was just joking around with the topic title, though. No need to take it any seriously. ^^;
It's just that I thought it'd be fun to talk about a not-so-popular and also a bit old Mario game now. That's all, hehe.

When I beat that game I didn't do a complete playthrough and just got to the end. I thought my time would be better spent beating NSMB2 instead of a 100% playthrough.

I might've probably beaten the game years ago when it was still fresh, but I'm on my way of becoming a Mario master so I need those 100% playthroughs now lol. Next one on my list is NSMB Wii but I might just go for NSMB 2 first. I actually really like the series. :blooper:

I never actually 100%ed it, I think Bowser's Castle is the only level where I'm still missing Star Coins.

The implementation of the Blue Shell was really weird, I think. Why bother creating an entirely new power-up and then not putting it in any actual levels? It's a shame since Shell Mario is fun but having to get it from a Toad House or flying ? Block is annoying and not always possible. I really wish they brought it back in future NSMB games along with the Mario vs. Luigi mode.

YES. Getting the power-ups became quite the chore more so than actually collecting the Star Coins. Usually, if I die at a level I'll just press A and go back to it again, but here... I had to go back to World 1-4, get the Mini-Mushroom, be careful not to die while trying to reach the end as Mini Mario, go to whichever level I needed the Mini-Mushroom for and try not to die before reaching that very specific spot where I actually needed to use the power-up. It didn't happen with more than four levels or so in my case, but when it did happen... I wasn't really enjoying myself. The Blue Shell, as it's been said, isn't really used that much so thankfully I didn't have many of those moments with it. Also, why does Mario need to switch to Mini Mario or Blue Shell Mario when he's already using the Fire Flower? I understand switching when using the regular Mushroom, but I wish one could choose when to equip those other power-ups.
Anyway, I'll concede that I'm probably just bad at it, though. Otherwise, the game was tons of fun. I'm glad I decided to complete it!

I don't remember the game very well but to answer the question: sure if you want to. It's a fun way to spend a few hours. What more can you ask of a videogame

Any game that a person wants to complete is worth completing if they find it worth completing.

Completion.

I actually did complete it a few years ago...

But I lost the save. If I did try to get to the last level again, it would be not 100%. I would play it again though.

I seem to be the only one here that likes this, and enjoys using the mini mushroom and blue shell, though I admit it's annoying needing it to get between worlds.

After the other NSMB games I can totally understand how any of those can be... any of those, tbh! That's why I'm playing through the series one game after the other so that I can get the substantial differences between them if there is any and then, when I go back to the older 2D games, compare both eras.

Any game that a person wants to complete is worth completing if they find it worth completing.

I like this. 😎

Yes, the game is really fun. Even if you don't focus on completion, it still is incredibly rewarding just because of how much fun it is to beat the levels, especially the later ones imho.

And to answer my own question (because, in a way, I now feel complied to do so): with Super Mario Maker 2 and (to a lesser, almost non-existent extent) NSMB U Deluxe still relevant, I doubt there's going to be another new 2D title any time soon (haven't read the news, so please correct me if I'm wrong ^^) so there's plenty of time to revisit the oldies and go for those glorious 100% playthroughs. Herein lies the actual justification for sinking hours of my holidays into playing more New Super Mario games. :buzzy:

Actually, tbh, I'm expecting a new 2d title to come out soon, if not the next major one (bound to come out this or next year since odyssey was back in 2017/2018) then the one after, since the last mainline one was nsmbu in 2012, unless you consider mariomaker a core series game, which I don't. You could bring up nsmbu deluxe but that's just porting nsmbu to the switch with some new additions.

Since we haven't gotten a new mainline Mario Kart game for the Switch either, I'm thinking MK8 Deluxe and NSMBU Deluxe are all we're getting in those series on the Switch. I'd love to be proven wrong though.

Actually, to be frank, i think thats the reason there will be new MK and 2d mario games on the switch; there arent any yet and the switch is a very popular console

Oh, I'd love to see a new, proper MK game or a new 2D platformer, it's just that I'm not sure that's where the focus is at right now. I certainly don't think Super Mario Maker 2 is a mainline 2D game, but Nintendo can still milk it develop on it and keep it relevant for a year or two, imho. Not to mention, MK 8 Deluxe is still a top selling game on the eShop and -in the UK at least- it's yearly sales have been increasing since its release in 2017.

Hopefully, I'm wrong and Nintendo still has something up its sleeve and the 35th Anniversary surprises us with a new big release down the line. Meanwhile, I'll be chillin' revisiting the other NSMB games.

Yup, me too. ^^

I honestly thing it is okay but I've beat it once back a long time back. I am still waiting for NSMB Switch to come out so that we have Peach, Daisy, and Rosalina playable in a 2D Mario game on Switch.
