WINTER:
...
She is getting worse.
...
TURTLE:
Who is getting worse?
WINTER:
A scavenger I've been monitoring.
I've told you about her. The
Symbiote? There has been an
incident.
TURTLE:
That was the twitchy one, right? The one Moon said had
disturbing thought patterns?
What happened? Did she hurt someone?
WINTER:
No...... Er, well, yes. But that's not what I'm talking about.
There was a point during the proceedings today where she spoke, and the
voice coming out of her mouth was completely different from the way she usually vocalizes. It was cold and clinical; talked about a survey and energy reservoirs below this facility.
TURTLE:
Huh. What do you make of that?
WINTER:
I have had my suspicions for a while that something was not right with her. She didn't seem like her mind was fully her own.
But that
incident has made me certain! I believe a powerful
animus is
controlling her actions through that
plate bolted to her head!
TURTLE:
A
rogue animus... Do you know who it could be? Is it related to the experiment?
WINTER:
I don't know who it is. It doesn't feel like the same brand of nonsense I've been exposed to in this facility. I'm thinking it might be an
external party.
Turtle, you are an animus yourself. What is your take on the situation?
If I restrained her and ripped that thing off of her, that would
break the control, correct? That's how I freed my brother back then.
TURTLE:
Well, not necessarily. It depends on the exact nature of the
enchantment. There's a chance it may work, but it could also do permanent damage to her, depending on how the spell was constructed. It could even, you know, hurt YOU if it's designed that way.
Like, that's the insidious thing about animus-touched objects. They don't need to be near you to work, and you never know what traps are on them.
WINTER:
Can you disable it remotely? Or even just learn if it is trapped?
TURTLE:
Uhhhh... No, I don't think so. My
magic can't reach across the veil, otherwise I'd have pulled you out of there as soon as the death game started. If you could bring her here, then yeah, I could probably do something. But where you are now... Sorry. It's not possible.
WINTER:
Hmm...
TURTLE:
Winter, if I may ask you a question... Why are you so fixated on that one scavenger in particular?
The things Moon said about her thoughts, the strange
arcane energies woven through her being, she seems kind of dangerous.
WINTER:
I'm not sure entirely...
I think
pity is a substantial part of it. Existing in a state like that, with someone else's claws in your brain, it is not a way anyone should have to spend their life.
Whenever I see someone being
controlled in this way, I think back to my brother, who had to spend years trapped inside someone else, tormented by memories that weren't his own. And then I think about when it happened to me, feeling my thoughts twist in my head until they were unrecognizable.
Altering someone else's mind, it's... disgusting. Wrong. Even if you do it with good intentions. It deprives the
innocent of their free will, and it denies the
wicked the punishment of having to live with their guilt. There is never any
merit or
justice to using a power like that.
Having to see yourself, and live on as an utter caricature of your former self... If I had the choice I think I would rather die.
TURTLE:
...
WINTER:
But also... I think I can understand her feelings.
I may not be able to parse the noises she is making, but I hear their tone and intent. I can tell she is someone who wants to show her
strength. She is hungry. Desperate. To prove to the world that she is
powerful and
capable. It's a feeling I understand very well.
I can tell it by the look in her eyes. The very eyes she hides behind those stark yellow facial coverings. There is that
glint. A need. A drive to persevere.
The truth is, that kind of defiant hunger doesn't form by mere chance. You don't just wake up one day and decide to
struggle against the world because it seems like good fun. You do it because you have to. There is always a reason, something that ignites that glint in your eyes and pushes you.
It is the glint of
spite! When you fight every day to show the world that you are
strong, that means at some point the world has made you feel
weak. There is no desire to
prove yourself without someone or something who
does not believe you.
I don't know what happened to this one. Maybe she was a victim, or maybe underneath all of this twisted magical mess she is a terrible person who deserves scorn. But regardless of any moral disposition, she is someone who
struggles, and she should have the right to do so without some malicious actor's meddling.
And that's why I think she should be
free. To live her life in pursuit of
fulfillment, or rot away in the depths of
guilt. But either way, the experience should be
hers alone. And for some interloper to take that from her is something I
cannot accept.
TURTLE:
I see.
WINTER:
Do me a favor and don't mention any of this to
Qibli.
I can do without his yakking about me commiserating with a scavenger.
TURTLE:
Oh, he is, uh, standing behind me.
I should have probably mentioned that. Sorry.
WINTER:
Ugh... great.
TURTLE:
He wants me to ask you if you got his
plans for what to during the upcoming night?
WINTER:
Tell him I will NOT hide inside one of the grandfather clocks in the clock workshop room! That plan is stupid!
TURTLE:
Oop, now he's trying to join this conversation! Oof! Agh!
WINTER:
Spare me! I am not in the right headspace to deal with the stream of nonsense burbling forth from his mouth right now!
Tell him I'll talk to him tomorrow. It's getting late.
TURTLE:
All right. Good luck, WInter.
