Chapter 1: Disappearance

Part 1

It was a day like any other as Ninja Squid prepared for work.

Or at least, it should have been, by any other metric. But for Ninja Squid, it had not been. It was a bunch of smaller, much less apparent… things that had been off. For starters, when he woke up this morning, his favorite face mask had inexplicably moved, falling from his bedside table to the floor. Then came his morning cup of coffee, which, rather than brewing with a pleasant aromatic steam, fell from his coffee maker ice-cold, as though it had been refrigerated overnight. Finally, and perhaps oddest of all, was his schedule: he could've sworn that this entire week was booked by 'Shroom business, but as his eyes fell upon his calendar, what would he find but a perfectly barren, open page.

These abnormalities were not enough to ultimately stop Ninja Squid from getting ready for the day, but they certainly caused him to pause at every instance. What on earth was going on here? Admittedly, he had been feeling rather absentminded recently, but nothing to this degree. It was as if everything was just becoming slightly… different. In that weird, alternate timeline kind of way. You know, with Curious George's tail and all that.

So pressing forward with a certain vigor, Ninja Squid slipped on his best ninja-yoroi, donned his gloves, and stepped out into the bustling world of Pipe Plaza, New Wikisburg. He knew that the sooner he got to The 'Shroom offices, the sooner he would be able to discuss his experiences.

Pipe Plaza was probably a little searing to the eyes, if you weren't used to its vibrant greens and towering structures. Nearly everything in this area of New Wikisburg was green: green apartment buildings, green pipe tunnels, green sidewalks, even both the trash bins and the recycling bins were green, which likely caused confusion for newcomers to the area. Down the sideroads bustled the New Wikisburg residents, ranging in size and species with each person; the streets were filled with go karts and large automobiles as visitors came and went. Ninja Squid didn't pay too much mind to anyone specific passing by, as the environment was always this clearly an urban jungle, but he still grumbled to himself at the sight. He was secretly hoping that today would be a slower day, which seemed to be not the case at all.

The Inkling hurried his way down the front steps of his apartment complex, tugging up his suitcase in his hand. The apartment he rented was nearly miniature in scope, but it was one of the only available housing areas he could find in the Plaza, and besides, if he ever really wanted plenty of space for the night, he could stay overnight in his 'Shroom Headquarters office. He didn't tend to do this, as frankly, one time he'd gotten a spook over a ghost in the building, but hey, options are options.

Ninja Squid squeezed his way into the shoulder-to-shoulder crowd, taking the right at 45th St., then a left two blocks up at Plaza Park Av. This commute, he had quickly discovered, was the briefest path to take to the 'Shroom Headquarters: it had the least number of turns, the least number of miles to walk, and the least walk signs for crossing the street. So Ninja Squid navitaged his way as he always did, ducking between passerbys and briskly breezing past cars at the crosswalks.

The morning sun pleasantly peaked its head over the top of the tallest buildings, painting Ninja Squid's face with a soothing orange glow. Alright, maybe he had just been dramatic about his experiences. There was still the possibility for today to be a good day, and maybe he really was just being as absentminded as he thought. Sheesh, did my first thoughts really go to an "alternate reality"? he thought. There is no way the world is changing around me, that would be absu-

He paused in his tracks, midstep, his left foot still perched up in the air. In front of him, where the 'Shroom Headquarters would be normally stationed, there was nothing but open air and a massive hole in the concrete.

"Oh, come on!" Ninja Squid shouted.

Why didn't I think to do this?!

Great job on this! I need more.
