TOO BAD, ART TIME. (Waluigi Time's art thread)

Oh! Oh! I have one! Can you do the Puppet master next? Or maybe some of Monty Brandos Goons since they just appeared In your latest issue also quick question who is this commander nebula?

Commander Nebula is one of the NPCs from Amusing Awards Artifact Adventure! She was the host character for the Star Blasters ride at the amusement park. You can see the full cast of characters in this post.

Month 2! This was... not very productive. Oops.
2025-02-17.png

The rest of the Mystery Dudes since I already redesigned Muercello and Spectra a while ago. I originally planned to draw them before they reappeared, but motivational issues happened. Oh well.

2025-02-19.png

If you squint hard enough, this may look like a tiny wooden Shmaluigi with giant Shantae hair.

2025-02-27.png

Hey look, recurring canon fodder! I may have given them designs that are too cool considering their usual role as incompetent lackeys, but... it's fine.

2025-02-28.png

Tried to take TPG's suggestion from a while back of doing different angles with a demonstration of why WT probably shouldn't mess with power-ups. Could've turned out a little better I think, but that's what practice is for!

2025-02.png

Hey I got a few more suggestions for ya!
So How about
Bandwich
Count Tyranos
More of Monty Brandos Goons
Shmaluigis True form

That would be Shippy! She was an NPC in Awards Randomizer Killing Game. She's a pure soul, mostly. Spends a lot of time writing romantic fanfiction about nautical vessels.
Unironically I would read that

I've been putting off posting these for way too long, so here's a few more character models I made going back through last year!
MrCharlesRender.png

Some of you may recognize him, for those that don't this is a character named Mr. Charles made by Eleven. He plays board games! (Now that I'm seeing it again I think I twisted his leg too much in this render because it looks weird.)

CoreyRender.png

Corey from MBMB, who I originally started last year as part of a much more ambitious in scope C14 presentation. Ultimately due to time/effort constraints and the fact that some nominees ended up placing a lot lower than I expected, I ended up pulling back on it a lot which cut Corey's role entirely. He sat unfinished for a while before I finally got around to putting the rest of him together (which included redoing his entire body because I misinterpreted it the first time!).

TPG2Render.png

TPG2's model met a similar fate, but he still got to appear in the final presentation, at least! At some point I would like to do his Scribble version as well as the Kingsbournes.

ShmaluigiRender.png

Last but not least, my dude Shmaluigi! After dealing with unfinished business I wanted to get a few more of my own characters in 3D space, but he's the only one I finished so far. He's not entirely built from scratch, and lives in the same file as WT since they share some assets. Starting with this render I'm using HDRIs to light my scenes.

Now that she's an established character we gotta see what Jasmine Looks like

Month 3, which should've been month 4 but I didn't draw anything for this last month... I will not number these any more to cover it up and no one will ever know!
2025-04-15.png

I would like to draw more characters in karts, because despite everything I'm still on the Mario Kart World train. Expect more in the coming months unless I drop the ball (possible). Unfortunately, the current weight classes don't really accommodate poor Shippy here...

2025-04-17.png

Zero Suit Nebula, because it's something I was thinking about. Much like her Koopatrol armor takes from Rosalina's color palette, this outfit matches the unused concept art of Rosalina from Odyssey. I already wanted to do a black shirt, so the pants easily fell into place.

2025-04-20.png

Hoppy Easter from Mr. Shbeeg.

2025-04-24.png

Tyrannos here was requested for a while and then I found out he was DryBonesBandit's favorite villain of mine so I kind of had to draw him. For the fans!

2025-04-28.png

Shmaluigi is finally allowed to be not Shmaluigi again... Doesn't quite come across here without any other characters for reference, but he's a bit taller and thinner than an average Duplighost, preserving some of that Waluiginess. (Also, Duplighosts are pretty fun to draw actually?)

2025-04-29.png

A conversation involving the phrase "unpleasant slimes" made me want to do a quick drawing of actual unpleasant slimes, so here's Teller and Bhigwhig (and Zurg as a bonus) in Wubba form. The moral of the story, don't let Teller touch any Wonder Flowers. It makes hairy slimes exist.

2025-04.png

I love how even Shmaluigi's real self has some resemblance to Waluigi. While I previously imagined his real self sounding like Ben Schwartz as Sonic, I now imagine him sounding like Danny Wells as Luigi instead. XD

It's Scribble commentary time again, this time for Scribbles Labs 2: Double Vision!!! (Had to add the extra exclamation point in there because the first two are just part of the title.) To be honest, I have mixed feelings about this run. The game itself is some of the most fun I had in Scribble, I'm pretty happy with most of what I drew, and my team had a good run all things considered (shoutout to RHG), but outside of Relay and the bonus round none of my own scribbles won their matchups. I try to go into Scribble caring more about just having fun drawing than performance, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't sting a little. Granted, I did spend multiple rounds going up against juggernauts like Kright and TPG, and it seems like I wasn't the only one who had a rougher run than usual. Ah well, maybe next time.

I also tried to branch out with some non-Mario scribbles since I've received some feedback encouraging me to break away from my usual stuff. The only scribbles I've done before with no Mario basis whatsoever were "Sinking Feeling" and "Promotional Material" in 2023's Scribble Scrabble, so uh... yeah, haven't done much of that! Unfortunately it seems to have backfired exactly in the way I was worried it would, since I got some comments about people not getting the references or just not being that interested in the source material I chose. I think in the next tournament I'd rather attempt to do completely original content for my non-Mario scribbles and see how that goes... but I'm not counting out a Pizza Tower appearance yet either.

Round 1: Moving In
"Micro-Goomba Mix-Up"
Labs2025WTRound1.png

One of my personal favorites from this run! My scribbles are usually pretty character heavy, but I think this is some of my best work when it comes to putting characters within a setting. Having more distinct characters (as opposed to pre-existing characters or generic designs) is also something I wanted to try more of after the last tournament, so the Koopa and Toad get little mover hats. A Moo Moo being used as the company's branding is supposed to imply that it's called "Moo Moovers", even though there's not enough room to display the full name. Hopefully that's fairly easy to infer, though!

Anyway, the crux of the joke is obviously the Pile Driver Micro-Goombas disguised as moving boxes that got mixed in with the real boxes. I think I had these guys on the brain because they were the subject of what was, at the time of the scribble, DryBonesBandit's latest edition of Dry Dry Data in The 'Shroom. One of them is even disguised as a lawn gnome! There's no deeper explanation there, I just think gnomes are funny. RHG's Fire Brick color worked wonders here, being close enough to brown that it could help the boxes pop from the rest of the scribble.

I'm not too surprised this won the Artist Favorite poll, although I think round 2's could've beaten it if it was included there.
Round 2: Public Park
"Third Wheel"
Labs2025WTRound2a.png
rhg2.png

My original submission (left), RHG's completed version (right)

For the Relay round, RHG and I decided we would both try to make as complete of a scribble as possible, and then the other would flesh it out and clean things up in the second half. I was already really happy with what I was able to accomplish in just an hour, especially since it blows some of my earlier scribbles out of the water in my opinion (yay artistic growth), but RHG's extra coloring and detail work really brought this to the next level, and I can say it's definitely better than what I probably would've done with it if I had the full 3 hours. I only hesitate to call this my favorite of the pieces I did this tournament because I can't fully take credit for the final result.

Anyway, this one was a little harder to come up with than round 1's concept (I initially considered doing something with the idea of someone walking Poochy) but didn't take too terribly long. Why did these two Whittles decide to try to have a picnic date in the shade of a tree that watches them (or at least stares off into the distance and makes them feel really awkward)? Dunno, but it's funny. In the interest of making somewhat distinct designs (a theme that immediately stops here, by the way), I played around with different leaf placements compared to what's shown on SMG2's models. I thought about giving them little outfits too but decided not to. Woody, on the other hand, is just Woody. Pretty happy with how he turned out for my first time drawing him, although if I wasn't limited to just an hour I'd probably have tried to give him more detailed leaves.

Round 2.5: Gas Station
"Service With A Smile"
rhg.png
Labs2025WTRound2b.png

RHG's original submission (left), my completed version (right)

This is where our initial plan backfired on me because I did not realize how much it would bother me to mess with someone else's artwork. Whoops! I spent lots of time spent wondering if I was messing up RHG's original vision, even though I mostly just did some cleanup on the linework and recolored things to make them pop. I was worried about the blank space on the left side (the age-old Scribble dilemma, do you fill in the empty space and risk making it too busy or leave it and risk having it look too empty) so I threw in a kart ready to be refueled after my first attempt at a regular vehicle ended up sucking horribly. I thought about using the remainder of the empty space to have someone leaving the gas station, and at one point had sketched out one of the office workers from ARKG, but they clashed way too much with RHG's attendant. Ended up just leaving it alone with the time I had.
Round 3: Claustrophobic
"That's Not How The Song Goes"
Labs2025WTRound3.png

I went into this round fully expecting to get hit with a no Mario characters condition, and dreading the cruel hand of fate going as far as forcing me to not draw any characters at all... and instead I ended up having to draw Susan Boyle. Starkuss you absolute legend.

So I get the prompt of "Claustrophobic" and I'm required to draw two specific characters, and my thoughts start drifting to a fairly obscure Weird Al original song called "Stuck In A Closet With Vanna White" and won't let me leave. So now instead of being stuck in a closet with her, Weird Al's stuck in a closet with Susan Boyle and Mona instead. He seems like the only one that's not too bothered by this, and one of my earlier ideas was to include a speech bubble of him saying something to the effect of "That's not how the song goes, but I can work with it". As you can see I ended up scrapping the speech bubble and moved some of it to the title, which I originally thought about making much more on the nose like "Stuck In A Closet With Vanna White 2!" or something like that. I went into this expecting exactly zero people to get the reference and I'm pretty sure that's what happened!

Mona here was RHG's sabotage condition as something he thought would work well in my style. I've never actually drawn Mona before but I'm very happy with how she turned out here. I tried making Susan and Weird Al's hair more detailed, but it didn't look very good so I binned that. Also, dark backgrounds!! I always love how these look in scribbles and want to do more of them but never feel like my ideas for prompts lend themselves to them, so I was happy this let me do another one. The black background with white lines for the walls is very Castle Bleck. My only regret is that I agree with FWD's feedback that Susan doesn't look very cramped.

My own sabotage condition was that all characters would have to be Pokemon, since I knew RHG had experience with them and I noticed Starkuss' characters in the earlier rounds were pretty simplistic, so it seemed like a good wrench to throw into it. Technically this could've been circumvented by refusing to draw any characters, but I figured the voters probably wouldn't go for that. My backup condition was for personal colors to only be used for linework, which seemed like something RHG could pull off better with his darker red than Starkuss' brighter green.

10/10 would scribble Susan Boyle again
Round 4: 18
"Maybe Next Update"
Labs2025WTRound4.png

Kaizo MarioBoards you cruel, cruel set of prompts you... I'll be blunt, worst prompt I've ever gotten in Scribble! I was wondering what the heck the rest of the round was going to be like when I saw this but looks like I ended up with the worst of the batch. I can safely say by far this is the most time I've spent trying to get a workable concept from a prompt, I don't think I even started drawing this until about 45 minutes into the round maybe?

Anyway, 18. How do you make a good scribble out of a number? One of my ideas was to go with something related to 2018, and I almost settled on doing an ominous scribble of a Piranha Plant with the title "It's My Year" in reference to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate... but when I double checked it turns out the DLC didn't come out until 2019, so that was out the window. Eventually I settled on the 1.18 update to Minecraft, Caves & Cliffs, which true to its name overhauled world generation with a particular focus on mountains and the underground. I was originally trying to go for a scenic scribble with mountains on the top half and caves on the bottom (with stalactites forming a sort of mirror image) but the more I messed with it the more I realized it just wasn't coming together. Images like that aren't my expertise and it just wasn't cool or funny.

So I pivoted to this scribble involving the Warden, a boss monster that actually isn't in 1.18 at all! Caves & Cliffs had a pretty troubled development history with its contents being split over several updates, as a matter of fact, 1.18 was actually the second half of what had originally been promised as part of the update. The Warden here was also supposed to be part of that content but ended up getting delayed even further to 1.19, hence the title. The specific scene here is a spoof of a well-known Eric Andre clip.

For the palette, Marty's Meteorite Purple was an easy choice to synergize as a dark color with my own. I considered borrowing Ryan's Fantastic Blue as well in my earlier concept, but when I pivoted to one based around the Warden I dropped it for a more fitting color. The green here isn't color picked from the Warden's texture, but is instead one I already had on hand because I've used it before for my character Shippy. I think it looks nice and Wardeny here. Even though RHG was my teammate, I never considered using his color once I settled on the Minecraft concept, although I probably would've taken it if the Piranha Plant idea hadn't fallen through.
Round 5: Puzzles
"Puzzling Haunted House"
Labs2025WTRound5.png

Rounds 3 and 4 were somewhat of a rough patch but I can say this is another one of my favorites from this tournament. When I got the prompt, Papyrus almost immediately came to mind as something I should include, so it became a somewhat Undertale-themed scribble. The actual direction, however, was heavily influenced by RHG's own prompt of Haunted Woods, inspiring me to go with a general spooky theme for team synergy (although mine is a lot more lighthearted while RHG's leans towards actual horror). The giant skeleton in his was my suggestion, since we might as well both have skeletons. We also both ended up having our scenes illuminated by a single light source which was more coincidental than anything, so that's neat (and uh, there's wood in both I guess?).

So with the spooky theme, I ended up on the idea of Papyrus doing a jigsaw puzzle in a haunted house with a ghost eating the pieces. Originally I thought, well, what if the ghost is Gengar, but I decided against it since the mixing of properties didn't really make sense, and it transformed into a generic sheet ghost (not Napstablook or any of his ilk, though). The ghost was also bigger and sitting in a chair at first, which I ended up not liking because it made its presence too obvious in relation to Papyrus being confused about the missing pieces. You could say the ghost is invisible but it felt too hard to communicate visually that Papyrus couldn't see him, so it ended up being smaller and somewhat hidden by the table so the joke works in either interpretation. Also, it has the 😋 face!

As for the skelebros themselves, I've actually drawn them before but it's been a hot minute. They look a lot better here than in the stuff I've done before. More importantly, I had the perfect palette to work with between RHG's Fire Brick for Papyrus and my Grape which was close enough for Sans. I'm pretty sure fonts are banned in Scribble, so I typed up the dialogue in their signature fonts, eyeballed it, and then recreated it by hand. Quite possibly the worst thing I've ever subjected myself to doing in Scribble.

Also, I know I said I didn't want to mix properties but this doesn't count because it's a cameo. I figured with the relation to puzzles, it would be fitting to have Professor Layton as a spooky little haunted house portrait! Originally he had his eyes and mouth, but I decided that looked too friendly so I got rid of them and added some crosshatching for shading underneath his hat. Crosshatching is such a good effect man, I love it. The only other thing I have to say here is that I played around a lot with the lighting to hopefully sell the candle effect since I had the time, and I really like how it looks on Papyrus' black bones specifically.
Bonus Round: Leaked Mario Wonder 2 Level
"Piranha Plant Parade Upgrade"
Labs2025WTRound6.png

For the bonus round I decided to challenge Rose on their terms of Synergy + Olympus conditions at the same time, since it seemed like it would be fun. Unfortunately I don't really care for this scribble much for reasons I can't quite put my finger on, I just don't really vibe with it and didn't have time to salvage it into something different. I think this concept might've worked better in standard colors. I like the Mario though!

So my thought for this was a follow-up to Piranha Plants on Parade, with the Piranhas now getting some sort of ridiculous over-the-top death float, and Mario about to be run over by said death float so that it could play into RHG's prompt of "The stream was left on for 72 hours to honor his memory" (because what the heck do you do with that). RHG ended up finishing his concept first and asked if I could make the float Banzai Bill-themed to tie into his Rise of the Mushroom Kingdom reference, so here it is! Petey Piranha being all dressed up is sort of a callback to a similar Piranha Plant I had leading the parade when I presented the Favorite Super Mario Bros. Wonder Level award last year, and the Piranha gunner on the side is wearing a Hammer Bro helmet and using Roy's Bullet Bill cannon from NSMBU. Also, the 2 coins and 25 flower coins are a reference to this being Scribble Labs 2 hosted in 2025.

Since I didn't use RHG's color in the original Synergy round I figured I might as well use it here, and it was pretty much a no-brainer with the characters that ended up appearing. I considered a pink for my lighter color, but when I applied it to the Banzai Bill's eyes and teeth it didn't look right at all so I switched to blue. Coincidentally this gave it a pretty similar palette to the Tri-Color bonus scribble I did in the last tournament.

Somehow, Team Inktoplasm for round 2 managed to roll the only two colors I've ever used in Scribble at the same time, and I couldn't leave that unacknowledged!
CopyrightInfringement.png

So yeah, here's every iteration of myself from Scribble so far reacting to this happening, somehow together in one room even though they don't even live in the same time period. For time's sake since I kept procrastinating and having other things to do, only the frontmost WT is polished. Just for fun, I tried to preserve some of the drawing quirks of the original Scribble hosts instead of turning them all into my usual style.
