I think it's unfortunate. Very, very unfortunate. Not giving Mario a talking voice is like leaving a loved one in a coma or something. No, that's too exaggerated, but I hope you know what I mean.

I think Mario's problem is he isn't allowed to react to things as much as he should.

You mean like the same treatment as Mickey Mouse?
 
Even Mickey mouse is given more leeway than Mario is.
 
Hell, Mickey Mouse isn't a blank slate like Mario. He is given a personality like everyone else. I'm sure he got some lines in things like Kingdom Hearts.
