I don't mind that most of the playable Pokemon are from Gen 1. The game is supposed to be a collection of Nintendo's all-stars. A lot of the most popular Pokemon are from the first generation. That's just the way it is.
I'd disagree and point to Shulk, Ice Climbers, Pit,
Fire Emblem, and Ness when someone is arguing about "it's a game of Nintendo's All-Stars". I'd argue that it's more about Nintendo's history as a whole, and presenting one side of Pokemon, the earliest side, especially since Pokemon is divided by generation, kind of makes it feel lopsided. Every generation has its share of popular Pokemon, too, so it's not like they're horribly obscure either.
In fact, I'd support something like Huntail or Porygon2 being playable despite the obvious outcry because... well, it's more interesting that way, IMO.
