You can make that argument for Mario games

but not for Smash
 
As for Mario, Toad should really have priority. He's been a part of Mario as long as Peach and Bowser have. He's instantly recognizable even to non Mario fans. There's no one he could really be a clone of and it would be hilarious to beat people up with Toad.

hell I'd prefer Waluigi over an RPG character

I keep making this argument, but Toads have been playable consistently since New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Hell, if we had Toad playable in Super Smash Bros. 4, we'd have the complete cast of Super Mario 3D World.
 
I am vehemently opposed to the idea of a Playable Ghirahim. He is a terrible character that is very annoying in of itself and as GalacticPetey said, Tingle and Impa are more deserving as Zelda reps (and even so, Zelda only deserves 5 reps this game though it would have been nice to cut Toon Link and Sheik for those 2) while Bowser Jr is more deserving as a villain rep. As for Mario reps, I believe the series deserves 7 and Daisy and Bowser Jr should take priority while Toad should have to wait out for Smash 5.

Yeah, the fact that not one but two Toads got to be playable in NSMBW and U over characters like Peach or Wario is kind of a testament to that.
 
Not to mention he's getting his own bloody game (in the form of Captain Toad but my point still stands)
