While they said that amiibo characters aren't playable, I think they were only referring to when the characters are summoned in battle. You should be able to play as them via the character select screen.

Please tell me this merging is only in the 3DS version. I do not want to have one of the most stressful modes of the game forced down one of the funnest in the Wii U version.
