Guys it's obviously Mario Pinball Land.

In all seriousness though, 3D Land could have been done better, and Mario 64 is proof of that.

#1. Super Mario 64 (1996, Nintendo 64)

By the mid-1990's, the great Nintendo-Sega war was at its peak, and it seemed like Nintendo was slowing down in releases of new Mario titles. The SNES was aging, but the Sega Saturn failed to sell well in the United States. Then came Nintendo's secret weapon; a 64-bit console, and with it the first major 3D platformer; Super Mario 64. State-of-the-art graphics (at the time), sound (for the first time outside a second-rate cartoon and a godawful CD-I game, we got to hear Mario), and gameplay was just what Nintendo needed for a launch title. Environments seemed limitless; in 1996, this was the equivalent of being in the Mushroom Kingdom. With Mario 64's success, other games inspired by it only boosted the N64; two fantastic Zelda titles, a Donkey Kong platformer, and the Banjo-Kazooie franchise. The console wars had been won and the gaming world revolutionized thanks to Super Mario 64.

You see, when Nintendo were making Mario 64, they were like "oh no what if something that works in a sidescroller doesn't work in a 3D game" so they invented this whole new style thing that IMO worked a lot better in Banjo-Kazooie. But then A DECADE AND A HALF LATER they were like "hey maybe it will work" and thus Mario 3D Land was born and it was great.

But SM3DL took absolutely no time to beat.

Have you heard of anyone importing a Japanese 3DS? People can do that, you know. People already played through the game.

So do a lot of Mario platformers. Unless, of course, you're actually trying to 100% them.
