So I thought of this one theory about that Mario being Mario's last name thing..

Well, ya see, I just noticed something; I think it might be safe to imply it's his last name because of Dr. Mario. Since peoples' first names aren't used in their doctor title, they use their last names. So basically, Dr. Mario just proves the fact that he really is Mario Mario.

I honestly don't think that's really his last name. People refer to doctors as their first name sometimes. For example, we had the Great American Teach-In yesterday, and a doctor came in and talked about his job, and we referred to him as Dr. Bob, when that was his first name.

So in theory, they could just be referring to him by his first name.
