Sonic Generations

I just beat the game on the Xbox 360.

The finaly boss fight was hard, mostly because I didn't know how to get close enough to the actual boss to attack it. And my "friends" yammering away didn't help at all. But about the ending and the scene right before the final boss fight

Tails called Classic Eggman Dr. Robotnik! OMG, I CAN'T BELIEVE IT! I LOVE YOU SEGA, I LOVE YOU NOW AND FOREVER!!! Although it is weird how he seems to be okay calling himself that now...

Seriously, the two Robotniks/Eggmen are the best part of the ending. Everything they say is a riot, they're both so egotistical and self-absorbed, although Classic Robotnik/Eggman seems to have more sense. Modern Robotnik/Eggman seems to be losing it somewhat, as Classic Robotnik/Eggman pointed out, probably because of all his constant losses. The funniest part was when they're trapped in the white limbo and they're talking about their success rate, their plan, and how Classic Robotnik/Eggman is going to dedicate himself to forgetting it. :P

He also contemplates going back and getting a teaching degree, to which Modern Robotnik/Eggman agrees, as he's always loved telling people what to do.

That's something I noticed about this game, there's a good sense of humor and self-awareness to it, but not in a ruinous way like in Sonic X, but in a cute way that doesn't ruin the story or break flow. It makes me want to play Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colors to see if they, too, have that same brand of humor.

One thing that made me laugh, though not intentionally, was that Modern Sonic told Classic Sonic that his future's going to be great! ...Perhaps he's better off NOT knowing.

This game was GREAT! Fantastic! I even kind of liked the Modern Sonic stages. It took some getting used to, but I think I've gotten the hang of it, at least for the most part. SO many callbacks, and so many unlockable content, I think I might be busy with this game for a while! ;)

It's different on the 3DS. Green Hill Zone still appears on the 3DS version but otherwise it's mostly other stages and the gameplay at least for Modern Sonic is more like the Sonic Rush games. I haven't played it. But I kinda hear it's the inferior version anyway.

It's pretty good so far. I'm on Radical Highway, but I can never forgive Sega for making one of my favorite courses in SA2 the worst course in this game. You either go too slow or too fast in this level, and the latter will likely end up killing you.

Edit: They brought back the Biolizard from SA2. Shit...

Even if it's the "inferior" version, it's still a good game, and having levels unique to this version only makes it even better, since apparently the XBOX, PS3, and Steam versions have the same levels. Bought it for 15 bucks anyways.

I just started playing the 3DS version, and I have to say it's pretty underwhelming compared to the Xbox 360 version. I didn't mind the downgraded graphics or the textbox cutscenes, I was expecting that. It's the gameplay that really struck me. It seems like Sonic slows down no matter how long I try to keep him running. I almost got stuck as Classic Sonic when I was in this really deep pit in Casino Park, and no matter how many times I spin dashed, I could NOT get out of there... At least, not without a little luck. Also, some areas with Modern Sonic that were designed to have Sonic running up the walls and on the ceiling really fell flat, namely Sonic kept slowing down and falling, and I reached a REALLY bizarre scenario where Sonic was moving at the pace of a slug yet STILL somehow clung to the wall...

I guess I'm supposed to be using the boost here, but really, this all smack to me as a somewhat rushed development. With the Xbox 360 version, I saw, or at least FELT, that most of the kinks were ironed out, and tested. Then again, that's probably to be expected, Sega was mainly focused on the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, not the 3DS version, which was probably just a tie-in. Not to mention, I was genuinely surprised at how short Classic Sonic's Green Hill Zone was. In fact, if my memory's not mistaken, it's EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE ORIGINAL GREEN HILL ZONE! Just with updated graphics... ...Lazy... :-\

Oh, and they brought back the old method of grading. I liked the 360's Sonic Generations grading system, where you can tell exactly what you were graded on and how to improve; namely, it's based on time and how many coins you got. You also get a bonus if you didn't die or restart the stage, which is the only way you can get an S rank.

Here, pretty much every stage I complete I get C's or D's, and it really pisses me off. Here I'm trying to get used to the controls and the physics of the game, and the game's already judging my every move. It really hurts your self-esteem and ego...

But whatever, I haven't even gotten to Big Arms yet, so I won't say anymore bad things about this game. Just think of this as a first impressions little mini-rant.

Edit: One more nitpicky thing. I just beat Big Arms, and now apparently, Classic Sonic can use the Homing Attack. Um, okay? I mean, the Homing Attack is part of what distinguishes Classic Sonic from Modern Sonic, ESPECIALLY for the 3DS version, where both play games in 2.5D mode. I'm not complaining or anything, in fact, the homing attack is damn useful, but still, it just feels weird to see Classic Sonic using it.

I have to agree with Gamefreak75 on Radical Highway, especially Modern Sonic's stage. Pain in the ass, and the remixed music sucked, too.

It seems that with almost all the Modern Sonic games, not only CAN you get through them all by just boosting, it's almost a requirement!

If anyone cares for the stages in the 3DS version, they are:

Green Hill Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog
Casino Night Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (I would've prefered Oil Ocean or Hill Top Zone, but whatever)
Mushroom Hill Zone from Sonic and Knuckles, I think.
Emerald Coast from Sonic Adventure/SADX (Again, I think there were better choices for this, but oh well)
Radical Highway from Sonic Adventure 2 Battle
Water Palace from ??? (I think it might be one of the GBA ones; also the music is irritating)
Tropical Resort from Sonic Colors

The bosses are:
Metal Sonic
Big Arms
Shadow
Biolizard
Silver
Egg Emperor
And of course, the Time Eater

Water Palace is from Sonic Rush. Also how is the Time Eater fight in the 3DS version?

A LOT easier to attack than the 360 version, and that's mostly because your friends aren't yammering in your ear to "BE CAREFUL" every time it attacks.

That said, even though it's easier, I mean in that it's more self-explanatory how to actually ATTACK it. For the 360 version, I spelt at least half of the time trying to get near the damn thing! For the 3DS version, I knew how to get to it and attack, it's just it's pretty difficult to get to it, and requires a lot of quick-time.

Yeah in 360 version it is hard getting to it also I got a bit confused in the bit where it fires that lser at you becasue I didn't reazlie you had to hold the quick step buttons in.

You know, I thought I'd be playing this game more... but there are actually a lot of games I've been meaning to play... Maybe it's my own fault, I keep procrastinating making time each day to play certain games. :/

That said, I DO want to play this game again, if only to watch the Eggmen cutscenes again! ;D

I'm happy because I have unlocked the best Sonic music ever in Generations. I only need a few more music tracks then I will have them all.

Yeah I'm glad they have Route 99 though. I love that due to playing Sonic Advance 3 loads throughout my childhood
