  • Mario Kart World is very fun. I wouldn't say it's worth $80 (since that values it higher than Tears of the Kingdom, and... yeah, no) but I'm still very satisfied with getting it since I'll be able to play more NSW2 exclusive games in the future and it technically only costs $50 bundled with the console (this is a lie, it costs $500. Don't fall for the bundle scam).

I like the track selection and unlike a lot of people I see talking about the game I don't mind the straightaways/track connectors at all. It's all the same to me since I'm focused on what's happening ON the track, not the track itself. Or the scenery if I'm in free roam. The environments in this game are so pretty, you have to give it that. I love Sky High Sundae

24 players gives the game much more of a chaotic feel than previous Mariokarts. I keep seeing I'm in like 7th or 8th or something and having to remind myself that's actually pretty good LMFAO

Knockout Tours are the optimal way to play online when you want actual stakes for falling behind. Instead of the rather meaningless points system you actually don't get to finish the race if you fuck up which makes it feel like there's an actual punishment for losing. But regular races are a more chill way to just hop on and play for awhile when you're feeling mellow.

Favorite new tracks in the game are Whistlestop Summit and Starview Peak. Favorite returning tracks are TOUR Sky High Sundae and DS Airship Fortress (didn't that already come back in 7 though??)
How can GTA VI take ten years to develop when Sonic 3 took a year and some change

sonic 3 only took a year to release because they split the game in half to meet the deadline of a mcdonald's promotion

@Lily Even around the mid 90s, Sega was rushing out shit like a golden lion tamarin on speed.

so what you're all saying is if we went back to sprite games we'd have new games every year or two AND they'd be good? seems like a no brainer to me
Do the homies agree that Mario Odyssey is a classic on the level of Mario 64, now that it's 8 years behind us? It's got the same level of easy replayability to me

Weird, I feel like Odyssey's kingdoms don't have enough open space

64 might be a classic, but a classic that definitely did not aged well. It would need a severe remaster because it's way too janky for today's standard. Anyway, Super Mario Sunshine is the real classic here! :boshi:

    2. Wii U Rainbow Road
    1. N64 Rainbow Road
I'm curious, does anyone think there'd be potential in a 3D Super Mario Kart remake? If they made the tracks less flat (i.e. more... 'creative' interpretations) I think it could work

If it were a Switch 2 game I also think it could give players a more traditional Mario Kart game to play without crowding out World. I know 8 Deluxe is obviously still playable but the game is at its core 13 years old now

fix the problem of a game being 13 years old at it's core by releasing a game that's 33 years old at it's core

I can't say I see much value in it from a consumer or business perspective, honestly. It would basically just be 8 Deluxe (a game that a lot of people already own) with a lot less content in it, likely for the full price of a Switch 2 game. You can't justify $70 for Super Mario Kart again when World and 8 Deluxe are right there at similar price points with so much more to do in them (and why waste development resources on it when those two are already selling like hotcakes?).

If Nintendo ever were to remake a Mario Kart game, I think it would have to be something like Double Dash that has more unique mechanics going on. They bring back so much retro content in the games as-is that just putting a new coat of paint on would have very little novelty.
Sometimes I just look up at the night sky, filled with stars, and I think...

Everything is gonna be ok, huh?

I don't get what the deal is with Metropolis Zone. Like yeah it has an act 3 apparently but it doesn't seem that bad so far

I waited an hour just to be sure you cleared the zone first.

Metropolis is the most difficult zone in the game, full of speed gates through sideways half circles, tricky jumps across blocks with extending spikes, a vertically wrapped layout so it's hard to determine where you are, and the highest number of crushing hazards in a single zone. The bolts are also kind of slow unless you are playing as Sonic & Tails, and people who want to collect all the Chaos Emeralds do not play Sonic & Tails because it makes collecting the Chaos Emeralds harder.

But really, its having the three most dangerous badniks in the game. Both Slicers, the mantises, and Shellcracker, the crab are near impossible to defeat without getting hit. Doubly so because Metropolis tends to put the player in cramped spaces without much room to dodge. Also, I think Shellcracker's claw hitbox is bigger than it should be. But worst of all are the starfish, Astrons. Their five projectile attack is really hard to dodge, both because of the number of projectiles, the cramped spaces, and because of Sonic's intentionally loosey goosey controls. Astrons hide in walls, so they can't be defeated before they shoot. Sometimes you can outrun them, but sometimes you can't. And sometimes Astrons are put in the bolt areas which leads to the scenario depicted in this Not Enough Rings comic. (CW for other strips: blood)

(The alt text is "Aren't you glad this is the longest zone in Sonic 2?" Having Sky Chase follow this zone for a break from the difficulty was a good choice.)

Getting booted off a bolt by an Astron is the worst. None of these are softlocks, but the process of moving backward to reset the bolt, returning, going back up, and likely having to contend with more Astrons while using the bolt because the first attempt likely did not get all of them to notice Sonic and explode is incredibly slow and really frustrating. I'd sell my soul for a extra path that didn't have Astrons.

Not reading this yet because I haven't cleared the zone, I posted this when I wasn't actively playing lol. I'd edit it into a spoiler tag just to be safe

    Ok I beat that zone

The starfish were actually pretty easy to deal with. If you get on a bolt without Tails and full send it, no slowing down at any point, you go up at the perfect speed to avoid all of the spikes. I just did that and it worked out like 4/5 times

It definitely wasn't my favorite zone, but I'm lumping it in with Marble and Scrap Brain- kinda irritating but not terrible. Hilltop Zone from this game is worse imo
Finished Sonic CD last night! Got the good ending too, but man I can't imagine having to beat the special stages in one try in the original lol, those were irritating as ever

the guest waw Dan Howell (from Dan & Phil) at the show I went to. The second half which he was in was entirely just a scripted bit about how much he secretly hated Phil.

That sounds pretty different, Jschlatt was at mine and it was mostly him pretending to be aggressively conservative and insulting other YouTubers.

Except they kept being sidetracked by the crowd getting them to chug water bottles lol

You know, know that I've played Sonic it's making me sort of dissatisfied with Mario's comparatively blander level themes. The New Super series, sure, but even classic games don't give their levels particularly interesting or distinct identities- Marble Zone, Spring Yard Zone, etc. has way more character than 1-1, 1-2, or even say, Donut Plains.

Like, you call it Donut Plains but it's basically a normal grassland area. Why not do something more interesting with that and have actual donuts floating around... or something? Mario Kart does a comparatively better job at this, tbh

3D Mario, of course, is a different story altogether. They don't have this problem except for the two when they tried to make it 2D but the 3D was the 2... D.

Anyways, this a roundabout way of me saying I, so far, much prefer Sonic's stronger focus on world building, environmental storytelling, and distinct characters. Mario is much more tightly designed, but I find that to be less and less engaging for me personally these days.
