The Super Mario RPG (the user) reversion project

And here is a follow up edit because I felt like going on a spree today. My rationale for this is, if I see it, I should act decisively because possible future edits from other users are going to just make it harder to undo as time goes by.

I will also add that bizarrely this person added an "overview" section for Treasure Tree and other Mini minigames even though this is a board minigame and not a standard minigame with the typical "intro" and "ending" padding that were plaguing these sections in the standard minigame articles. I mean I can't say I'm surprised at them exhibiting poor judgement trying to overextend good ideas like this to the point you have to LARP as a lawyer to make sure they don't screw up pages outside of the targeted pages. It's their gameplan.

I was going to edit the Toad's Midway Madness page for being a bit light on details, but my radar went off, and I checked the history, and my suspicions were proven correct. During this careless spree, Soupy Game Gear did the following:

  • Made the opening sentence resemble the trite structure of "[X] is an enemy in [Y]", which is a complaint I'm seeing cropping up more and more, reflective of the edits this person has made.
  • For some reason this guy removed details that Toads are in the board hosting the mini minigames and shops.
  • Guy gets rid of the statement about what the main attractions are (the two teacups and the rollercoaster rides) for some reason despite these two being very obvious parts of the board. Instead, the teacups are relegated to a single sentence saying "a teacup ride" and so implies there's only one teacup ride despite two. Now, the main page says "teacups are the main way getting around" which I'm not sure if I can make a strong statement like that since there's only two teacup junctions but the first is practically unavoidable.
  • The roller coaster part is just made shittier, like the guy badly wants to condense all this information into one sentence or two and remove all the details in the process.
  • Guy called the Mini minigames "unique" for some reason as if all Mini minigames are the same ones in other boards. Again, this person condenses everything into one sentence and leaves no breathing room explaining the minigames, probably assuming details go in the article.
  • While in the process of changing from active voice to passive voice (why?), this person removed details that Toad challenges you to Bowser Bop
  • For some reason information about Steamer is relocated to the trivia section and removed details of how and where Steamer shows up.

Better deal with it now. Rollback + middle mouse button works wonders for these pages.

EDIT: And here's another wave.

And I threw in a more involved edit why not

And another
One editor noticed the article was missing information on how Goomba rolling a 10 automatically counts as a loss With proof! They saw it in a YouTube video! Turns out Soupy Mayo removed that tidbit in the process, making our wiki look stupid. I mean a LOT of details were removed for the glory of describing everything in as few sentences as possible.

For instance, a removed detail concerns with a gameplay mechanic that is central to this board: once you pick an area after that marble spin, you can't really get out without items or certain Happening Spaces on the board, but you can leave by losing to a Goomba. Soupy Mayo mucks up the prose by removing the important sentence "In the areas, there are a few ways to get out.", because it was supposed to be a leading sentence to deal with methods to get out. It first discussing dueling with that Goomba and then that Happening Space where your character sits on a poker chip like a fool while Goomba tackles them and makes them slide and bounce like crazy (details on that kind of traversal are removed so it just sounds like your character just rides a poker chip). But when Soupy Mayo removes this, the resulting prose looks disjointed and information don't appear relate to each other.

Soupy Mayo also removes the part where, during the part of the board that a Goomba uses a spinner to determine where you'll go, if that marble lands on a Star, you get 20 coins. Unfortunately no helpful editor caught that yet, but now that's restored, no one is going to need to "fix" this.

It's been a hot minute since I've done anything on the wiki, so next I took on Baby Bowser Broadside. It was already a pretty short article before Soup came in and made it shorter.

I saw that someone already took care of Motor Rooter, but there were still some Soup elements lingering, such as the use of "overview" over gameplay and the use of a multilang profile template for minigame instructions (when the only shown language is English...) As such, I went to fix these as well as some elements that were accidentally replaced in the prior edit.

Super Mario RPG (aka Super Game Gear, henceforth referred to as "SGG" because we don't want to besmirch the good name of Square's kino) was a highly prolific editor up until his ban in 2025. Highly dedicated to the cause of "making the wiki more professional" and "removing unencyclopedic content", SGG diligently rewrote hundred (maybe thousands?) of pages with a particular focus on Mario Party and sport spin-off minigames, making sure to shorten them as much as he could.

He was also really fucking bad at it.

Endemic problems to his rewrites include a bizarre fixation on removing any and all details about the gameplay of a game (even on "gameplay" topics like minigame pages), clunky and obviously not proofread writing obsessed with shoving as much information as possible with no regard to clarity or readability, and a deeply unfortunate habit of not researching whatever subject he was rewriting, which lead him to misinterpret the existing statements and falsify information or remove useful details. While we initially put up with it because we had other preoccupations and it at least seemed well-meaning, looking into his edit history deeper after his ban made it painfully obvious the large majority of his rewrites are at best an obvious downgrade. Even in the cases where a pre-SGG revision does exhibit problems, it's invariably preferable to SGG's attempt to fix it

While in some cases it's as easy as saving over the immediate revision prior to his rewrite, in other cases, pages that were "rewritten" by SGG (or "souped" as the staff called it) have since been edited by other contributor with often valid and informative writing, and it's not fair to the hard work of those editors to remove it wholesale alongside SGG's mess. Those take a greater effort to be fixed. As such, the staff set up this thread to track and discuss the effort to unfuck all of these pages. It was initially for the use of our staff board, but as the extent of the damage became apparent, we felt it was appropriate to publicly draw attention to the cleanup.

Also while we've made our frustration with has transpired quite apparent, we ask you keep the thread focused on the cleanup effort instead of dunking on SGG.
How do I contribute to this project?

He's soupy and never groovy!
Context: You can't get soup from an egg.

This whole thread makes me think that SGG has never played a Nintendo game before

Ok which articles haven't been cleaned? I wanna do this too!

Tacking on to this, the primary thing I would say is to check the user's contributions and filter by most recent page edits, but I think most of those have been taken care of. So the approach I would go by (and the one I'm doing as of now) is that if you see a page that has a massive removal edit with no one having replaced it, that would be a page to start working on. Be careful, cause there are a lot of well-meaning edits interspersed between Soup's edits, so try to keep them on when removing a Soup.
