General Discussion

Should the VS Space from Mario Party 5 be merged with the Duel Space article? It is currently a red link on the Mario Party 5 article.

Just gonna reply to some points in last night's APNG proposal (MarioWiki:Proposals/Archive_46#Allow_.APNGs_and_create_a_notice_template_related_to_them).

Actually, if APNG images saved as .png files are used instead, the browsers that don't support APNG images can still show the first frame. Should we recommend APNG images in .png files instead?

I don't think that would be necessary. We should be using .apng only when it is absolutely needed, like those Color Splash sprite animations.
There is no such thing as a .apng file, in the same fashion as there isn't a .agif file. The extension is always .png, animated or not.

53% of our visitors use Chrome. Just because there is a bug report for APNG support in Chrome (as there has always been) doesn't mean they have any intention of actually including it. So you can think of this proposal as asking, "Should we break animated images for the majority of our visitors?" Even if Google comes out and says they will support it, I wouldn't do anything until we can actually see it in action on both desktop and mobile.
Their own Chrome Status website states it is in development though. So while it is indeed not supported as of now, it is a thing to come in the foreseeable future.
Glad to see that most visitors use good browsers though.

I don't even know what APNG is, or whether my browser can run it, but why not? It sounds useful. Get with the times, Mario Wiki!

One thing I don't really understand is why browsers don't support APNGs, but support PNGs.
First thing to do is find out what the file is before getting involved I guess.
APNG is an extension of the regular PNG. PNG was once set up to be backwards compatible when new things are put into it. APNG being a new thing (since 2008 really), if not supported is just ignored by the viewer.

Sorry thaty I didn't notice the discussion here, we actually even have a timeframe for Chrome support

Of course, the idea of APNG being backwards compatible with PNG means that the extension must be the same, there is a mention of the .apng extension on Wikipedia but in the end it seems to be the exception, so I ended up stating the obvious normal case as if it was a special thing...

Hey guys, quick question, but is there a way to make small images like this bigger than its original size? I don't mind it getting pixelated because it's 8-bit anyway.

Scale it in a photo-editing program, but disable interpolation.

But is there a way without having to upload a new version of the image? I was thinking more like making the image bigger using wiki coding alone.

Not with thumbnail and frame, using other formats you can set sizes bigger than the image itself and they scale the image up without having to upload a new version.

That's exactly what I needed, thanks!!

If anyone is looking for a good program to use to create animated gifs of sprite sheets, this one is pretty good. It takes a while to get the hang of it though, so I'll post instructions here:

1) Get your sheet. Each sprite should be equally spaced apart and have transparency. Spriter's Resource normally does that anyway, but check it just in case. One issue is that the program converts #000000 into transparent values, so replace all completely black pixels with #020202 or #010101.
2) Open the program, load your image, and select how many columns and rows there are. Important: the program has mixed up rows and columns, so switch your numbers round (e.g. if the sheet has four rows, input four columns and vice versa). If a row has less sprites than the defined amount, say:

0-0-0
0-0-0
0-0

Then select image row data. It should be self explanatory what to do next.
3) Make sure 'Individual' is checked. If it isn't, sprite gifs will be separated by row, and you want the whole thing to be together. Click 'export'.
4) You may notice that the gif is rather slow, so if you upload it to ezgif.com you can adjust frame rate, and crop it too.
5) Save the final gif and do whatever you want with it.

Examples I've made using it are this, this and this.

Be sure to download it now; it'll be gone after a week!

Beware that Paper Mario: Color Splash sprites aren't aligned, it is not a smart idea to use automated routines, moreover they seem to have been compressed using lossy compression with chroma subsampling, resulting in many more colors than needed, they fully filled in GIMP the 256 colors and even forced color replacement.
In other words: beware with Paper Mario: Color Splash, and go manually if you see obvious misalignments or loss of color information.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam was a dream in comparison: even if shaded, my Lemmy's animation only had 40 different colors, and the sprites were all fully aligned and apparently compressed with lossless compression as well, since recompressing with palettized APNG resulted in 37.1 kB, or less than a kB per frame (yes, palettized APNG is more efficient than GIF).

Sorry if I post without replying to A51_Trooper, but I can confirm that Google Chrome is finally on the road to implement APNG:

Well it's about bloody time

So I was mulling adding another entry of the List of Rumors page.

Back in 2014, multiple gaming sites reported Nintendo was making a Wii U sequel to Wii Music after a patent was made public, but the patent in question was not describing a game at all, but rather one of the toy capsules in Game & Wario (see my post here). It's not a rumour about the Mario franchise, but it's one that's closely tied to it in an unique way.

Wot do u think

I'd say add it in.

That's really interesting: I'm sure we can add it. Your reasoning is pretty conclusive over at WF, and Mario-related media with full coverage should definitely have a place on these reference pages.

What is better? Having a simple quote or no quote at all in the main character page? http://www.mariowiki.com/Pauline

I mean, this quote for Pauline is so generic...tho it clearly describes her damsel-in-distress persona, no doubt lol XDDDD

Having a quote is nice, as it is meant to be associated with a character's personality. As for Pauline, I haven't played any of the Mario vs Donkey Kong games, so I don't know of a quote that is more suited to her page.
