What things from SM64 would you like to see return

What things from Super Mario 64 would you like to see return in the next 3D Mario game?

Personally I would LOVE to see old eneimes come back in a new way or even remixes of old enemies like whens the last time youve seen a heave ho or sushi in a modern mario game?

Wario playable

One of the things I would like to see return from Super Mario 64 is the idea that Mario is solely the playable character again. In later games, Mario is either: (1) aided by a different character like FLUDD or Co-Star Luma, (2) is not the only playable character like in Super Mario Galaxy or Super Mario 3D Land, or (3) both like in Super Mario Odyssey where Cappy can aid the player AND is playable himself. Mario vs. Donkey Kong (GBA) is probably the last platformer where Mario is the sole character without any assisting character, and not even the remake kept it when Toad is assigned the player 2 spot. Super Mario Sunshine have talking FLUDD so it might feel like it is a character and thus wouldn't count, unlike the Poltergust which is squarely a tool.

If they must include multiplayer, then Mario recolours would be preferred, like Mario Bros. GBA multiplayer or how Luigi's Mansion 3 have multicoloured Luigis. I think it would be nice to see Mario being in the spotlight once again, because I felt that having a different playable character might have diminished Mario's importance (the common accusation that questions Mario's playability when another character exists) even though being in the title means that he's naturally in the spotlight. It would be like how Luigi's Mansion only have Luigi is the sole playable character (Gooigi is still a Luigi) even in multiplayer. Nintendo might have preferred Mario to be aided by his friends, but it would be nice to see Mario spotlighted as a character because he is often taken for granted as a character, like treating him like he has no personality.

Thank you for reading.

I don't think I'd like to see fall damage return...
It's annoying when you're going against King Bob-omb and he throws you off the mountain...
Btw, I never beat Mario 64 but I'm thinking about actually doing so.
And maybe Luigi could really exist in a Mario 64 style game for once!

That's a good thought! I was gonna put "No Luigi" on the poll as a joke but then realized he's still in the game's code!

Which luma are you talking about here? The luma that Mario has in his hat or the luma that player 2 controls?

I like Cappy and Luma more compared to FLUDD because they didn't add to Mario's design. Except for of course Cappy's eyes but that's still very minor compared to a giant machine you carry on your back.

Edit: Every 3D Mario gimmick has essentially replaced Mario's punch move. If you think about it, each gimmick has provided a side attack in addition to Mario's stomp attack.

So nobody wants the 100 coin challenge??? That was my favorite part of SM64!

I didn't like FLUDD. He's difficult and janky to use.

As someone who has, yes, never actually gotten the chance to play Super Mario 64, I picked two specific options:

Big hub world: The last time a Super Mario game had a hub world from which most other areas are accessed from was 2007's Super Mario Galaxy. (Lake Lapcat doesn't count, you don't leave Lake Lapcat to go to other areas and really its more of the space inbetween all the areas than it is the space connecting all the areas. Also because its mostly water to zoom across rather than interact with.) I think with just under 2 decades of game design advancements a singular large hub world could be doable, combining the fun of large open spaces like Lake Lapcat with slightly smalle but less open areas. (Also, multiple large but discrete areas seem to load faster after a death than a single super large area, which is one of my Bowser's Fury peeves.)

100 Coin challenge: Since modern Mario games no longer have to boot the player out of the course when they reach a goal, a 100 coin challenge would be easy enough to do while performing other activities. Score attacks are fun as well and presumably this would come with per course coin total reporting like Super Mario 64 does.

The rest of these are either things where changing it each game feels like part of the brand (Getting a new take on attacking every game, a new person to race against every game, a new Power Star alike every game, a Red Coin like thing where collecting a certain number makes a collectable), things I don't care either way for or against (King Bob-omb, Ukiki, Penguins) or are things I think Mario game design has moved away from (1-ups, fall damage, having 8 health). I don't think Cannons and unconventional power-ups have really left the series enough to be considered a callback.

Mainly the one Player 2 controls, like in Super Mario Galaxy 2. I guess a case on how Mario is not alone could be made for Super Mario Galaxy 1, although this case is superseded by the fact that Luigi is playable in that game.

What do you think about meeting Luigi as Luigi? My guess is that when you play as Luigi you're actually still Mario but in a Luigi disguise. Kinda like in SM64DS.

I mean, I guess it would make more sense than Luigi being cloned 😂

Can you expand upon that, please? I've heard something of this sort for years, but can you explain the details of what exactly it pertains to?

Yeah sure! Nintendo was planning on making the game multiplayer, but ended up scrapping it due to some reason. Turns out there is an unused character model of Luigi leftover in the games files.

Edit: Did some more research and looks like I remembered it wrong. Luigi's character model wasn't found in the game's code. It was discovered in the 2020 Nintendo Gigaleak. Sorry for the confusion. Here's a good video to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fQfj0wYiRY

I think fall damage was fine imo. And since i 100%ed mario 64, a tip i would say is go for the easy stars first. Don't do them in order, trust me.

I think they removed him because of technical limitations

I died very few times from fall damage so I don't really mind it either. I think one reason they took it out was because galaxy had 3 life points instead of 8.

Yes that is what I heard.
