Guard Toad:
"Attention contestants! The game is about to begin! Please gather to the entrance of the temple and await further instructions!"

Guard Toad slips through a crack in the doors. Moments later, the doors open. You walk up the steps and enter.

"It is I, the great Rock Paper Wizard! Thank you all for coming to this grand temple. I will be your host for the duration of this competition!"

"Some have traveled from afar. But, I sense someone among you. Yes… A True Master is here in our midst. But which one will arise? Which one will be victorious? Let the Roshambo Battle Royal begin!"

"Now, contestants, I'd like to direct your attention to this panel on the wall over here. These are the rules of the game. There are some rules that have not yet been mentioned before. So please take the time to read them."

Rules

  • In this game, you will battle against your opponents to be the last man standing. I will allow players to make alliances and break them. it's up to you. Remember, this is the first test run of this format.
  • Everyone will be given 6 Normal cards and one Special card at the start of the game. The cards are dealt randomly from an evenly grouped deck, meaning there should be an equal amount of each type of card in play.
  • Each round, you will submit an action to the host. This action will be private. Failure to submit an action in the allotted time will result in a forced move by the host. Failure to submit an action for two rounds will result in elimination.
  • If you wish, you may revise your action before the round ends.
  • At the end of the round, submissions will be locked and the host will finalize everything and post the results of the round. Results will consist of what cards were played by who, how many cards everyone has and who is still left in the game or if anyone was eliminated. Specific cards in players hands and targets will remain hidden.

The Endgame
  • End game starts when 3 or less players are left. Repeat-targeting is allowed in the endgame

The Showdown
  • If at the end of the game there is a stalemate, meaning no further developments can be made, then every round the remaining players hand's will be replaced with one Wild card until there is one player left.

The True Master
  • The last player left in the game will be declared the winner and be awarded with a Prize.

Submitting an Action
  • Actions are to be submitted privately to the host before the round deadline. I will be sending you a private message here on the forums for this purpose.
  • An action consists of an attack and a target. You will choose one card from your hand as an attack and any remaining player from the game as your target.

Example of an action submitted to the host:
Attack: Rock
Target: Johny

  • Once submitted, that card will be sent to attack that player. The card you send out will also act as your defense to any incoming attacks. If at any point in the round you lose to an attack, you will lose the card you submitted. If you survive the round, you get to keep that card.
    • You will be informed privately at the end of the round if your card was successful or not. You will not be shown any other information, like who or how many people targeted you. You may be able to deduce this by the public results.

Cards
Rock_Card.png
Paper_Card.png
Scissors_Card.png

  • There are 3 types of basic cards. Rock, Paper and Scissors. These cards should be self explanatory. Rock beats Scissors, Scissors beats Paper, Paper beats Rock.
  • You can choose to group more than one Normal card of the same type for your action. This will beat any number of fewer cards of the same type.
Example: 2 Scissors Beats 1 Scissors. Be careful when playing more than one card, because if you lose, you will lose those cards. Example: 1 Rock beats 2 Scissors.
  • Ties do nothing.
  • You cannot target yourself.
  • You cannot target the same opponent twice in a row before the endgame. The endgame will start once there are 3 people left in the game. During the endgame, the repeat-target restrictions will be lifted.

Special Cards
Wild_Special.png
Net_Special.png
Binocs_Special.png

  • There are 3 types of special cards. Wild, Net, and Binocs. The rules above still apply, unless changed by the special card. Special cards are one time use, meaning, if you use it, it goes away.
  • All special cards ignore repeat-target restrictions.
Wild
  • Choose Rock, Paper or Scissors. Then choose at most 3 remaining players to target. Public reports of this card will only reveal the chosen symbol.
  • You may still group a Normal Card of the same type to make the attack stronger.
Binocs
  • Choose any remaining player as your target. After the entire round has resolved, you will privately sees every card your target will carry into the next round, including Normal Cards and Specials.
Net
  • Any cards targeted at you will not count as an attack, instead they will go into your hand. The point of this card is to stop multiple people from ganging up on one person. When playing this card, you will still need to choose a target because another Net could be in play and possibly capture this card.

This game is basically a test run, so I have allowed alliances for now. But remember, this is a game, so please be respectful to all players.

Please feel free to ask if you have any questions about the rules. Have fun!

I'm thinking rounds submission times will be 2 to 3 days. I'll give the first round more time to get everyone prepared.

Ninja Squid asked me a question about player alliances. And I've settled on making the Showdown phase skippable so that teamed up players can share the victory.

Could you please expand on this further? Allowing players to team up and win together feels like it would be unforgiving to "solo" players and an incredibly slippery slope for game balancing. This is raising a lot of questions for me, namely:

  • Skipping the Showdown seems to imply a situation of two players winning together, but given how vague the statement "teamed up players" is, what is stopping, say, five people from teaming up and then deciding to win together once they're the only ones left? If you don't set these things in concrete terms upfront, they can get out of hand very quickly.
  • Do I now have to spend heaps of time politicking to ensure I don't end up being the one who is outnumbered at the end because everyone else is engaging more "seriously" than I am? That is a significantly increased time commitment compared with "Player involvement is just submitting your card and target to the host each round".
  • How is a solo player meant to earnestly compete with teams of multiple players (even just teams of two) with shared resources and strategy who now don't have to deal with the risk of betrayal because why would you do that if you can just win together?

When I read the full rules, I glossed over the implications of alliances (which were not mentioned when we signed up) because at the end of the day we'll all have to wipe each other out in the end, but if team-ups are host-recognised victory conditions, then that seems very unfair. You might as well just assign people to teams from the jump.

My impression of this game and how it was described was that it would be a simple and easy to play free for all, so I would appreciate some further thought, clarification and regulation to what is essentially a brand new rule that's been thrown in at the last minute. I've hosted a lot of forum games over the years, and I can tell you from painful experience that throwing in a seemingly small and innocuous change that sounds like it'll just make things that little bit more fun without changing anything can actually severely alter the game in a way you didn't expect.

Thank you so much for your thoughts! I really want to make this a fun experience so any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

My thought process for allowing alliances to win together was because there wasn't a logical reason for players to team up in the first place, because they would eventually have to split up at the end. I do see how adding that rule would give solo players a disadvantage.

But what is stopping players from teaming up anyway? Even if they would have to split up? I've tried to create rules to stop alliances from picking on one player. But maybe those rules don't address the problem of having a general advantage over all solo players.

The net is supposed to prevent alliances from attacking a single player all at once. If that were to happen, the player with the net would get a huge advantage. There is a slight problem that I haven't addressed yet and that is, how would you know if you were being targeted by multiple players? Maybe the net should auto-trigger if 3 or more people target you.

And then there's the repeat-targeting rule to prevent alliances from whittling down one player's hand.

Also, currently, the showdown doesn't begin until there are no further developments with the game. You are always forced to submit a card and a target every round, even if that means targeting a player in your alliance. So this means that every player wanting to win together must each end with only one card of the same type, resulting in a tie between all players. I have no idea how hard or easy that is to do though.

Yeah, originally I meant for this to be a pretty low involvement game with some slight strategy so maybe allowing alliances to win would ramp up the involvement like you mentioned. Alliances are kind of giving me a headache anyway.

This is an experiment to see how this new format would go so I'm perfectly fine with changing any rules or playing without the alliance rule.

I also do not want to change a rule at the last minute, where it would possibly make most players feel like they were going to play a game they originally didn't sign up for. I realize that it might have come off that way. So, I'd like to ask all the players if they'd like to remove or keep the rule.

If you want to remove the rule, please react with a heart. If you are fine with the rule staying, please react with a like.
