What are the saddest Super Mario games in your opinion?

The ending of Paper Mario Origami King is a bit sad because Olivia the origami girl sacrifices herself to save the world 😢

The ending of Super Mario Galaxy never fails to get me. Watching everything in existence get sucked into a black hole, and then the Luma pops out of Mario's hat and waves goodbye to him before throwing itself into the black hole along with hundreds of its fellow brethren...man, that is such a heartbreaker.

That one sympathetic Red Shy Guy in Paper Mario: Color Splash that Mario talks to at the Sunset Express and later kills in the Mossrock Theater level. Seriously one of the saddest things that I've seen happen in a Mario game...

Here's a YouTube short that explains what happens better than I could

Rosalina's Storybook and the universe reset cutscene are an immaculate 1-2 punch.

I don't think anything in Mario games has gotten this much of an emotional tug at me, but seeing the babies say goodbye in Partners in Time made me pretty sad.

Super Paper Mario's ending on its own is emotional, but it becomes even sadder when I think of it in context to where the series would go from there. I have yet to feel like the line "may we meet again in another time and place" is fulfilled, considering the total reboot the series underwent afterward, unless you count the TTYD remake. Which yeah, there isn't a ton of new content in it but what's there does give a very small taste of what I think a hypothetical fourth classic PM game would be like. But as it stands SPM's ending still becomes sadder in meta context, and it was already sad before that considering how attached I became to its characters.

Bobby's death made me stare at the screen being like: "Oh my god. What the fuck just happened?"
