So this is a video recommended to me just now! Fans are taking the controversial Paper Mario Sticker Star and are making it the amazing game it could have been. Check out the trailer for more details! Chapter 1 releases in 2026!

(Also I'm not involved with the development but thought it was cool to share here! The game itself is not affiliated with Nintendo too)

Looks neat! Not entirely impressing, but definitely a big improvement over the final product of Sticker Star we got back in '11! I'm keeping my eye on this!

This is insanely impressive. I do lowkey wish it aimed for the E3 2010 visual style, but i understand that would multiply the workload by a lot since EVERY existing map would need to be completely remade. I'm looking forward to trying this out when it eventually releases.

Sticker Star we got back in '11!
hate to be THAT person, but my brain won't let me rest until I say that Sticker Star released in 2012.

I really like how this mod tries to retain the good aspects of Sticker Star (like the huge variety of consumable attacks you start of with right off the bat) while improving stuff about Sticker Star people did not like (like making the Toad NPCs stand out, replacing that godawful Thing sticker generic shady Toad with actual characters), rather than making just a TTYD clone and having the same exact battle system as TTYD.

However, some designs I really don't like. The armored Goombas and Koopa Troopas I think look pretty dumb and overdesigned, while giving the Dull Bones that stupid tuft of hair from the terrible older Dry Bones design wasn't necessary. Those are minor nitpicks however, and I'm interested to see how this modpack will turn out.

Ah, yeah. Sticker Star DID release in '12 rather than '11. My bad. It's been so long since the game has been out that my memory of its release date has gotten a bit foggy overtime. 🙈

wow, looks pretty cool.

too bad it's never gonna come out because now that they've publicly announced it, it's only a matter of when and not if nintendo issues a C&D against it and forces them to cease development

you'd think in 2025 people would understand that you do NOT announce any fan games, mods, ROM hacks, etc. of anything to do with nintendo's IPs because that literally just makes nintendo aware of it and we all know how overly protective they are of their IPs

you keep that shit under wraps until it's ready to release and then you announce it and release it because that way, even when nintendo inevitably issues a takedown after a day or two, well...people will have already downloaded it and they can easily spread it around and nintendo can't take down every single copy of this fan content in existence. once it's out there, it's out there.

As sad as it is, this is the unfortunate truth of how Nintendo treats their fanbase. They're just as bad as FreshTV is with their Total Drama fanbase in that regard.

Looks neat, not a fan of some of the designs though.

tell that to F3, which is literally a traditional yearly event dedicated to announcing fangames (which this trailer was likely intended for), and most of them survived. I don't follow every fangame so i can't confidently say all, but I can say that Nintendo has a type for what is more likely to be taken down. Monetized stuff, stuff that directly competes with a current release, and Pokemon related stuff since Game Freak is way more crazed about it.

There's plenty of Paper Mario mods similar to this that have been completely fine. TOK Refolded, Tower of Trials, etc. The idea that any fangame that gets a prerelease trailer is immediately doomed is fearmongering. I'd argue that fangames are more likely to die from the creators burning out on finishing them than from Nintendo sniping them. Some are on more thin ice than others, I'd argue that Super Mario Bros. Remastered with its Mario Maker elements is a riskier reveal given Nintendo's target history (even though I strongly hope it survives because I want to play it)
