Why we'll likely see a Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 collection this year

This year marks Mario's 40th anniversary. We probably won't see a new 3d Mario due to the main Mario team working on Donkey Kong Bananza. In my opinion, we're likely going to see a Super Mario Galaxy collection this year, released simultaneously on both Switch 1 and 2.

It makes more sense than Super Mario 3d All Stars releasing again due to Super Mario Sunshine now being on switch 2 online virtual console. I doubt Nintendo wants to distract from the Switch 2's GameCube emulation which is a selling point of the switch 2.

Although 3d All Stars could release again for $70/80 with Mario Galaxy 2, this is again unlikely due to Nintendo not wanting to distract from the Switch 2's premium online service.
Unlike the GameCube, we'll probably never see Wii games on the switch 2's online service because of the profit Nintendo could easily make off of remasters. We've already seen this with Donkey Kong Country Returns HD.

So it makes sense for Nintendo to release Galaxy again, (likely bundled with Galaxy 2) on switch 1 and switch 2.

Why switch 1? Nintendo has historically supported older consoles as long as the sales of those consoles are good.
Look at the 3DS. Nintendo continued to support it into 2019 with ports and remakes and only stopped when the consoles hardware and software sales dwindled.

Nintendo will likely do the same with the switch 1. A Mario Galaxy collection would sell much better simultaneously on switch 1 and 2.

When we see it

We'll likely see the Mario Galaxy collection in either September or October. I'd wager October is more likely. Nintendo won't want to distract from Donkey Kong, however, they also won't want to miss out on Mario's 40th anniversary.

Switch 2 exclusive features

While the collection won't be exclusive to Switch 2, it will likely feature exclusive gimmicks. I predict a mouse feature that acts as the Wii pointer.

Pricing

I doubt the game will be $70, but it might be. Nintendo has stated before that they price games based on the effort they put into them. A Mario Galaxy collection is relatively low effort to produce. Especially since Nintendo will likely use an emulator vs porting it to the Switch. (They emulated Mario 3d All-Stars and didn't port any of the games)

Thoughts? Maybe I'm being too hopeful but it seems likely.

in 1994 nintendo released super mario all-stars + super mario world, a collection of five aaa mainline mario games, the newest of which was only four years old at the time, all for the cost of 1 game. a collection with only two games, the newest of which being fifteen years old, sold for 70 dollars, would be an utter rip-off! i would never buy it. in order to make a game with the same value as super mario all stars + super mario world in the modern day, they should make a super mario 3d all stars + super mario galaxy 2 + super mario odyssey...

Urgh the point is 3D All Stars was controversial just because of the exclusion of Galaxy 2 (and also 64DS). At this point Nintendo can hardly jump of the boat unless we enter another console era where 3D All Stars is gone.

I am sorry but have you considered inflation? 1 SNES game was 80 dollars back then. If that game were to be sold today factoring inflation, inflation would force Nintendo to sell these at $172 dollars each. If they didn't sell it for $172 dollars they'd end up laying off people to cut the costs it took for them to put that ISO collection on these NSO carts (which, thanks to inflation, are more expensive to produce than ever). You should consider yourself lucky Nintendo is being generous and selling Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 for only 70 dollars and not 140 dollars or even 75 dollars (which is 50 dollars in 2008). Heck, you should be happy they're selling the game at all, it's better than them not selling it to begin with.

Please consider.

I feel like you could have posted that this was announced in the September 12th direct for context, so that the post wouldn't be empty.

Winner Winner chicken dinner! And called the exact USD price tag too. (You pay a 10 dollar mark up for buying the games separately.)

And hey, no epilogue campaign. Though there are new Rosalina's Storybook pages, the inclusion of the book in Galaxy 2, an Assist Mode, and two new amiibo. It's not exactly a blowout of a 40th anniversary release, though having both games on sale now is a good primer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. (I wonder how far this was planned ahead: it would certainly explain why Super Mario 3D All-Stars did not have Galaxy 2 on it.)

It's probably still not worth it if you played either game on any other device. (Knew I should have gotten them on the Wii U while they were cheap. Those releases were like, $20 each! And are largely equivalent, especially as you can just use Youtube to watch the new book pages.)

It's nice for those who don't have the games, but I feel like I've had my share after finishing Super Mario Galaxy (only Mario's campaign though). It's the same reason I didn't bother with 3D All-Stars even though it was in print, mainly because I played the games contained in it that I didn't need to go through them again.

Thank you for reading.

Yes. I made the mistake of completing Galaxy 1 and I'm now burnt out on it as well. Imo, it was a poor decision to require the player to complete the game twice. I might pick up Galaxy 2 since I haven't yet completed it

The new Rosalina content is cool. Hopefully it's written by Yoshiaki Koizumi. Unfortunately, I do have the feeling that it will be locked behind the amiibo. Time will tell.
Personally, I'm not a fan of this trend where new features in remasters are locked behind $20 paywalls.

$40 each isn't bad if these are proper ports and not emulations that have input lag. The Wii U rereleases were cheaper because the Wii U natively ran Wii games so they didn't have to put in development time into getting them to run.

Time will not tell because Nintendo already announced what the amiibo do.

In the Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 games, tap the Mario & Luma amiibo figure to receive a Life Mushroom.
In the Super Mario Galaxy™ and Super Mario Galaxy 2 games, tap the Rosalina and Lumas amiibo figure to receive a 1-Up Mushroom.
So yeah, just pay the $70 entrance fee and you're good to go on the storybook.

(It is really hard to find a link to the amiibo website these days. I had to search "Nintendo amiibo website" on Google to hit it, the search bar and navigation on Nintendo.com proper usually took me to product pages and not these pages. I'm putting this issue in the next Nintendo website survey I take.)
